The Present Situation of Information Services for Women in India
Anju Vyas Asian pacific women's information network center 1999 APWIN Vol.1 No.-
With this brief overview an attempt is made to present a glimpse of the current scenario of information services in India in the context of research and academic needs as well as every day information needs of women. It is evident that though a beginning has been made in both the directions, there are still considerable gaps in the services being provided which need to be taken care of. Standing on the threshold of the new century we should spare a little time for introspection and self-assessment. As information professionals have, we succeeded in helping the right user at the right time! Why is that still the most commonly expressed feeling at all women's studies forum is about the lack of women's information? Is it a lack of information itself or access to it or both? Is there a lack of dialogue among those who generate information, those who collect, organize, and provide it and those who want it, i.e. the end users? Are our present information sources and services inadequate? Also have we not been too elitist in our approach to information by leaving out the majority of the users, the women at the grassroots disserved? Are we going to be a party to the process of further marginalization of rural women by promoting the use of new technology to which they have no access what so ever? Some of these concerns must be addressed while planning future strategies.
