Influence of NaCl Salinity on the Behavior of Hydrolases and Phosphatases in Mulberry Genotypes : Relationship to Salt Tolerance

        Anas, S. Shaik Mohamed,Vivekanandan, M. 한국식물학회 2000 Journal of Plant Biology Vol.43 No.4

Two genotypes (Tr4 and Tr10) of mulberry (Morus indica) were cultured using aqueous solutions that contained different concentrations of NaCl (0 to 30 mM). Electrical conductivity (EC) values ranged from 0.52 to 4.60 mS ㎝^-1, with a pH of 7.0. Analyses were conducted to envisage the effects of NaCl salinity on some hydrolytic enzymes. Neither nitrate reductase nor nitrite reductase activities were affected by salt treatment in roots and leaves of either genotype. The activities of β- and α-amylases were higher in leaves than in roots. Both alkaline and acid phosphatases exhibited significant increases in the roots and leaves of Tr4; no such trend was observed in Tr10. The levels of peroxidase and superoxide dismutase increased quite significantly in the leaves as well as the roots of both genotypes. Increased enzymatic activities may suggest a stress-tolerant nature for these genotypes against NaCl toxkity. This was also evidenced by the unaffected levels in percent rooting, chloroplast pigments, osmoprotectants, nitrogenous compounds, and some biomolecules, as had been observed in earlier studies.

Effects of Pillar-Based Substrate on the Wire Arc Additive Manufacturing Process

Anas Ullah Khan,Yuvraj K. Madhukar 한국정밀공학회 2021 International Journal of Precision Engineering and Vol.22 No.7

The Wire arc additive manufacturing (WAAM) process uses a metal plate as a substrate for part deposition. The presented work uses small pillars of cuboidal shapes arranged together to form the required deposition surface instead of a single large substrate. The post-processing of WAAM is arduous due to the need for the part removal from the substrate. The pillar-based substrate made this part removal process simpler and reduced the machining requirement. A WAAM setup was designed and developed in-house by integrating the gas metal arc welding (GMAW) with a three-dimensional gantry. The setup was utilised to deposit thin-walled metal parts over the pillar-based substrate. The online recorded temperature at the base using thermocouples confirmed adequate cooling between subsequent layers. The temperature of the pillar-based substrate was compared with the conventional substrate, which ensured proper heat dissipation. The microstructural study and hardness measurement of the deposited parts also confirmed that the pillar-based substrate has little effect on the part quality. The applications of the pillar-based substrate were further extended to demonstrate the deposition of multiple parts on a single substrate and part containing non-planar layers (overhanging features).

Use of social media in education among medical students in Saudi Arabia

Anas Khaleel Alsuraihi,Ahmed Saeed Almaqati,Sultan Adnan Abughanim,Nisreen Abdulrahman Jastaniah 한국의학교육학회 2016 Korean journal of medical education Vol.28 No.4

Purpose: Social media (SM), a virtual place where people can share, exchange, and communicate their ideas and knowledge, has become the new trend in communication and learning. This study aims to explore Saudi Arabian medical students’ usage of SM and to discover the most common resources used in medical education. Furthermore, it aims to illustrate students’ belief about the influence of SM on their learning. Methods: This cross-sectional study administered validated questionnaires to medical students from different universities in Saudi Arabia, via emails, Twitter, Facebook, and short message service. A non-probability sampling technique was utilized and a sample size of 381 students was arrived at, using 95% confidence interval and 5% margin of error, since the total number of medical students in Saudi Arabia is approximately 36,000. The total respondents were 657 students from 23 different Saudi Arabian medical schools (females: 60.5%, n=397; males: 39.5%, n=260). Results: The questionnaires of 21% of the students (n=139) were excluded from the analysis since they were incomplete. The most common website used by both genders was YouTube (42.3%, n=185); however, males preferred using Twitter and Wikis (p=0.001). With regard to utilizing SM for learning, 95.8% (n=419) of the students believed that it is beneficial. Females stated that SM helps them link basic and clinical science (p=0.003). Conclusion: Medical schools need to improve the utilization of SM by their faculty and students by developing activities and encouraging the usage of SM in education.

In-Situ Temperature Monitoring and Feedback Control in the Gas Tungsten Arc Welding Process

Anas Ullah Khan,Manish Patidar,Yuvraj K. Madhukar 한국정밀공학회 2022 International Journal of Precision Engineering and Vol.23 No.12

An approach has been developed to automate the gas tungsten arc welding (GTAW) process. The process temperature was monitored in-situ and employed to implement feedback control using the infrared ratio pyrometer. The automation of the process was achieved by replacing the foot pedal of the GTAW power source with an in-house developed control system consisting of a data acquisition system and a relay. The GTAW current was made variable automatically to achieve the desired or setpoint temperature. The temperature control is demonstrated for a broad range of 400–1600 °C for both stationary and moving heat source (GTAW torch). The standard deviation from the setpoint temperature was found to be within ± 25 °C for all the cases. It was also implemented for the single-pass bead deposition by feeding a low alloy steel wire to control the bead temperature in the range of 1200–1400 °C at different deposition speeds. The bead geometrical and mechanical properties could be altered by controlling the deposition temperature. The maximum bead width increased, and height decreased with the increase of the deposition temperature at a constant deposition speed. The microhardness was found to decrease by ~ 12% with the increase in deposition temperature from 1200 to 1400 °C, while the deposition speed had a marginal effect.

Non-Financial Performance and Transformational Leadership: Interaction and Impact on Sustainable Development Practices in Jordan

Anas GHAZALAT,Khaled JUNDI 한국유통과학회 2021 The Journal of Asian Finance, Economics and Busine Vol.8 No.7

This article emphasizes the consequences of exploring the relationship between sustainable development practices and non-financial performing factors. Also, it investigates the combined effects of the transformational leadership style on the relationship between sustainable development practices and non-financial performing factors. Using primary data sources, this study reviews the literature on the relationship between the factors of the effectiveness of sustainable development practices of Jordanian contractors and non-financial performance. A total of 290 questionnaires were personally distributed to contractors in the Amman district in Jordan. Only 253 questionnaires were returned and usable for further analysis, which represents a response rate of 87%. Data was collected from October 2020 until April 2020. Hypotheses were tested through multiple regression analysis, and hypotheses for interacting effect were examined through hierarchical multiple regression analysis. Based on the results of the analysis obtained there is a significant effect on the relationship between sustainable development and non-financial performances. It shows that construction companies involved in sustainability practices will able to improve their performance, which contributed significantly toward the overall firm’s performance. Whereas, results from hierarchical multiple regressions showed that transformational leadership had no moderation effect on the non-financial performance in such a way that reaches a higher firm performance level.

      • Photocatalytic degradation of organic dye using titanium dioxide modified with metal and non-metal deposition

        Anas, M.,Han, D.,Mahmoud, K.,Park, H.,Abdel-Wahab, A. Pergamon 2016 Materials science in semiconductor processing Vol.41 No.-

In this study, photocatalytic degradation of methyl orange (MO) as an example of organic dye was investigated using different wt% Pd-loaded and N-doped P-25 titanium dioxide (TiO2) nanoparticles, as example of metal and nonmetal-doped TiO2, respectively. The Pd-loaded and N-doped TiO2 photocatalysts were prepared by post-incorporation method using K2PdCl4 and urea, respectively, as precursors. A variety of surface analysis techniques were used for characterization of surface and functional group while using ultraviolet/visible (UV-vis) analysis for monitoring photocatalytic degradation of MO. Kinetic parameters were obtained using Langmuir-Hinshelwood model to determine the degradation rate constants. It was found that the metal-loaded titanium dioxide degraded MO in water at a higher rate than did non-metal-loaded titanium dioxide fabricated by using the post-synthesis method. Also, the pure P25-TiO2 degraded MO more than N-doped TiO2 because of decreased surface area by particle agglomeration after being made by the post-incorporation method.

L2 Learners’ and Professionals’ Perceptions of Cognitive Task Complexity: Towards Developing an Index of Task Difficulty

Anas Awwad 아시아테플 2019 The Journal of Asia TEFL Vol.16 No.2

This paper attempts to broaden our understanding on how cognitive task complexity (TC) contributes to L2 learners’ and language professionals’ perceptions of task difficulty (TD). This study was conducted to allow a deeper investigation of the extent to which manipulating TC can influence perceptions of TD, what TC-factors contribute to perceptions of TD, and whether there is a perceptual match between L2 learners and language professionals. The study employed a mixed-method design in which 68 students and 26 language professionals evaluated the TD of two video-based narrative tasks. The students, who were L2 learners of English at a Jordanian secondary school, performed two tasks with increased TC manipulated by intentional reasoning (IR) demands. Data on learners’ perceptions of TD were collected qualitatively and quantitatively using a retrospective questionnaire. The language professionals, who were researchers with a TESOL background, read the tasks instructions and watched the two clips before deciding which task would be considered more difficult and why. Results showed a match between learners and language professionals on their perceptions of TD. Both groups rated the more complex task (+IR) as more difficult. Two categories of higher cognitive demands imposed by IR requirement, i.e. task-induced and task-inherent, were found to be the major contributors to the perceptions of TD. The findings have significant implications for the development of an index of TD, which is considered a priority for language teaching, testing and syllabus design.

Removal of ring artifacts in CT imaging through detection and correction of stripes in the sinogram

Anas, Emran Mohammad Abu,Lee, Soo Yeol,Hasan, Md. Kamrul Institute of Physics in association with the Ameri 2010 Physics in medicine & biology Vol.55 No.22

<P>Due to malfunctioning and mis-calibration of cells in digital x-ray detectors as well as impurities on the scintillator screens, stripe artifacts arise in the sinogram which in turn generate ring artifacts in the reconstructed x-ray computed tomography images. In this paper, a novel technique is proposed for the detection and removal of stripe artifacts in a sinogram with a view to suppress the ring artifacts from the tomographic images. To accurately detect the stripe creating pixels using a derivative-based algorithm, at first the sinogram is windowed to create a sub-sinogram by keeping the pixel of examination at the center position in the sub-sinogram. The other pixels in the sub-sinogram are selected from a polyphase component of the sinogram. A new mathematical index is proposed here to isolate the strong and weak ring-generating stripes from the good ones. For the correction of strong ring artifacts resulting from the defective detector elements and dusty scintillator crystals, 2D variable window moving average and weighted moving average filters are proposed in this work. On the other hand, a conventionally trusted constant bias correction scheme is adopted to correct the responses of the mis-calibrated detector elements. To evaluate and compare the performance of the proposed algorithm, real micro-CT images acquired from two flat panel detectors under different operating conditions are used. Experimental results show that the proposed method can remove ring artifacts more effectively without imparting noticeable distortion in the image as compared to a recently reported technique in the literature.</P>

A novel unsupervised learning method for intelligent fault diagnosis of rolling element bearings based on deep functional auto-encoder

        Anas H. Aljemely,Jianping Xuan,Farqad K. J. Jawad,Osama Al-Azzawi,Ali S. Alhumaima 대한기계학회 2020 JOURNAL OF MECHANICAL SCIENCE AND TECHNOLOGY Vol.34 No.11

Recently, several studies tried to develop fault identification models for rolling element bearing based on unsupervised learning techniques. However, an accurate intelligent fault diagnosis system is still a big challenge. In this study, a deep functional auto-encoders (DFAEs) model with SoftMax classifier was designed for valuable feature extraction from massive raw vibration signals. To maximize the unsupervised feature learning ability of the proposed model, various activation functions were applied in an effective methodology, these hidden activation functions enhance significantly the sparsity of the training data-set. The proposed method was validated using the raw vibration signals measured from the machine with different bearing conditions. The achieved results showed that the high-superiority of the proposed model comparing to standard deep learning and other traditional fault diagnosis methods in terms of classification accuracy even with massive input data sets.
