Magnetization Study of a GdFe5Al7 Single Crystal

A GdFe5Al7 single crystal with the tetragonal ThMn12-type structure has been studied in magnetic fields up to 14 T. The compound is ordered ferrimagnetically below TC = 262 K. Magnetization isotherms measured along the main crystallographic directions indicate that GdFe5Al7 displays easy-plane anisotropy. Anisotropy is also present within the basal plane between the [100] and [110]axes. The easy magnetization direction is the [110] axis with the spontaneous magnetic moment Ms = 0.58 µB/f.u. at T = 2 K.
Anomalous Increase of TC in UGa2 under Pressure

UGa2 is 5f ferromagnet with TC = 126 K. High-pressure study of a single crystal exhibits a dramatic increase of TC without any sign of saturation, reaching 155 K at p = 7 GPa, corresponding to +4 K/GPa. Such effect can be understood assuming a weak 5f delocalization and an exchange interaction driven by the hybridization with non-f states, which is strengthened under pressure.
High-temperature oxidation of europium (II) sulfide

The process of high-temperature oxidation of EuS in the air was explored in the temperature range of500–1000 C. The oxidation reaction enthalpy was determined (DH0exp =1718.5 kJ/mol). The study ofoxidation products allowed to establish the mechanism of EuS oxidation with oxygen. At 500–600 C, EuSis oxidized to a mixture of Eu3+-containing compounds (Eu3S4, Eu2O2S). In the range of 700–1000 C, onlyeuropium oxysulfate Eu2O2SO4 is formed. The structure refinement for Eu2O2SO4 was performed by theRietveld method. The luminescence intensity of europium oxysulfate Eu2O2SO4 with characteristic 4f-4ftransitions from the 5D0 state was investigated as a function of oxidation temperature.
