Patenting Activity of New Ventures in Japan
Akashi, Yoshihiko 한양대학교 경제연구소 2003 경제연구 Vol.24 No.1
The Purpose of this Paper is to consider the characteristics of patenting activity of small firms in Japan. As the result, we see that the number of patents that companies have increased profitability in the machinery industry, but the number of patents didn't have any relation with profitability in the chemical industry. We think that the qualitative factor of each patent does matter in the chemical industry.

Purpose Total or proximal gastrectomy of the upper-third early gastric cancer (u-EGC) often causes severe post-gastrectomy syndrome, suggesting that these procedures are extremely invasive for patients without pathologically positive lymph node (LN) metastasis. This study aimed to evaluate the clinical applicability of a stomach function-preserving surgery, local resection (LR), with prophylactic left gastric artery (LGA)-basin dissection (LGA-BD). Materials and Methods The data of patients with u-EGC (pathologically diagnosed as T1) were retrospectively analyzed. Total gastrectomy was performed in 30 patients, proximal gastrectomy in 45, and subtotal gastrectomy in 6; the LN status was evaluated assuming that the patients had already underwent LR + LGA-BD. This procedure was considered feasible in patients without LN metastases or in patients with cancer in the LGA basin. The reproducibility of the results was also evaluated using an external validation dataset. Results Of the 82 eligible patients, 79 (96.3%) were cured after undergoing LR + LGA-BD, 74 (90.2%) were pathologically negative for LN metastases, and 5 (6.1%) had LN metastases, but these findings were only observed in the LGA basin. Similarly, of the 406 eligible tumors in the validation dataset, 396 (97.5%) were potentially curative. Tumors in the lesser curvature, post-endoscopic resection status, and small tumors (<20 mm) were considered to be stronger indicators of LR + LGA-BD as all subpopulation cases met our feasibility criteria. Conclusions More than 95% of the patients with u-EGC might be eligible for LR + LGA-BD. This function-preserving procedure may contribute to the development of u-EGC without pathological LN metastases, especially for tumors located at the lesser curvature Purpose Total or proximal gastrectomy of the upper-third early gastric cancer (u-EGC) often causes severe post-gastrectomy syndrome, suggesting that these procedures are extremely invasive for patients without pathologically positive lymph node (LN) metastasis. RADIATION DAMAGE IN THE HUMAN BODY ACUTE RADIATION SYNDROME AND MULTIPLE ORGAN FAILURE

Whole-body exposure to high-dose radiation causes injury involving multiple organs that depends on their sensitivity to radiation. This acute radiation syndrome (ARS) is caused by a brief exposure of a major part of the body to radiation at a relatively high dose rate. ARS is characterized by an initial prodromal stage, a latent symptom-free period, a critical or manifestation phase that usually takes one of four forms (three forms): hematologic, gastrointestinal, or cardiovascular and neurological (neurovascular), depending upon the exposure dose, and a recovery phase or death. One of the most important factors in treating victims exposed to radiation is the estimation of the exposure dose. When high-dose exposure is considered, initial dose estimation must be performed in order to make strategy decisions for treatment as soon as possible. Dose estimation can be based on onset and severity of prodromal symptoms, decline in absolute lymphocyte count post exposure, and chromosomal analysis of peripheral blood lymphocytes. Moreover, dose assessment on the basis of calculation from reconstruction of the radiation event may be required. Experience of a criticality accident occurring in 1999 at Tokai-mura, Japan, showed that ARS led to multiple organ failure (MOF). This article will review ARS and discuss the possible mechanisms of MOF developing from ARS.

Gastro-esophageal reflux (GER) is a common and serious complication in patients receiving enteral nutrition, making continuation of enteral nutrition difficult. Semi-solid enteral nutrients were developed to prevent feeding-related GER. Semi-solid enteral nutrients have high viscosity and, therefore, are typically administered through a large-diameter percutaneous endoscopic gastrostomy (PEG) tube. Recently, a new formula (Mermed®, Mermed Plus®) was introduced that uses alginate, which behaves like a gelatin in acidic conditions. This formula improved GER during enteral feedings. Our case report shows that this new formula enables the continuation of enteral nutrition via a nasogastric tube (NGT) in patients with difficulty tolerating enteral nutrition secondary to vomiting. An 86-year-old woman with an atherothrombotic cerebral infarction vomited during tube feeding, resulting in aspiration pneumonia. After 1 week, we introduced a viscosity regulator and restarted enteral feeding using a 100 mL liquid diet, but vomiting persisted. Because of the continued difficulty in tolerating enteral nutrition, the patient was transferred to our hospital. From hospital day 4, Mermed Plus® (300 mL/225 kcal, administered for 1 hour, 3 times a day) was started, eventually increasing to 535 mL/400 kcal at hospital day 5. After this, vomiting ceased. Mermed Plus® was easily administered via NGT, and its effects were immediate. This treatment appeared to improve the patient's quality of life while reducing the burden on medical staff.
Improving the Robustness of Lips Sensing with Evolutionary Video Processing
Takuya Akashi,Yuji Wakasa,Kanya Tanaka,Minoru Fukumi 대한전자공학회 2008 ITC-CSCC :International Technical Conference on Ci Vol.2008 No.7
In this paper, an effective method is proposed for robust lips sensing. Our objectives are high-speed lips tr acking and data acquisition of a talking person in natural scenes. Our approach is based on the Evolutionary Video Processing. This method has a trade-off between accuracy and a processing time. To solve this problem, we proposed automatic Search Domain Control method and implement this method in the Evolutionary Video Processing. The tracking accuracy is improved from 66.3% to 84.9%. The proposed method can recover from occlusion and tracking loss. Comparative experiments are presented to demonstrate the effectiveness and robustness of the proposed method.
