A sero-surveillance of Brucella spp. antibodies and individual risk factors of infection in cattle in Bangladesh

        Ahasan, Shamim,Rahman, Siddiqur,Song, Hee-Jong The Korean Society of Veterinary Service 2010 韓國家畜衛生學會誌 Vol.33 No.2

Brucellosis is a serious zoonosis, recognized worldwide. It primarily affects animals, which act as reservoirs for human infection as well as being of economic significance to the agri-food industry. Bangladesh has been reported as an endemic area for brucellosis. So a cross sectional study was conducted to determine the seroprevalence and potential risk factors of brucellosis in cattle in Dinajpur and Mymensingh districts of Bangladesh. A total of 182 cattle were examined by Rose Bengal Plate Test (RBPT) between September 2008 and October 2009. Then Positive, doubtful, and negative samples were further confirmed with slow agglutination test (SAT) and both indirect and competitive enzyme linked immunosorbent assay (iELISA and cELISA). A questionnaire was used to collect epidemiological information of the animals. The overall animal-level prevalence was 3.30%. Brucellosis seroprevalence was higher (4.76% by cELISA) in cattle above 48 months than those under 48 months. Female showed higher seroprevalence (10.67%) than male (6.25%). Higher seroprevalence was also found in cattle bred naturally (20.0%) than artificially (8.77%) and cattle that aborted or with previous abortion record (22.22%) showed higher seroprevalence than non-aborted (7.69%). The sensitivity of RBT and SAT was found 100% as compared to cELISA standard test, whereas specificity of RBT (95.35%) was higher than that of SAT (94.32%).

Ultrahigh Birefringence and Extremely Low Loss Slotted-core Microstructure Fiber in Terahertz Regime Observed with a Modified Pyranometer

        Ahasan Habib,Shamim Anower,Rabiul Hasan 한국광학회 2017 Current Optics and Photonics Vol.1 No.6

A novel slotted-core hexagonal photonic crystal fiber (PCF) for terahertz (THz) wave guiding is proposedin this paper. A trade-off managed between effective material loss (EML) and birefringence for efficientguidance of THz waves is illustrated in this article. The rectangular slot shaped air-holes break the symmetryof the porous-core which offers ultra-high birefringence of 8.8 × 10-2. The proposed structure offers lowbending loss of 1.07 × 10-34 cm-1 and extremely low effective material loss (EML) of 0.035 cm-1 at anoperating frequency of 1.0 THz. In addition other guiding properties such as power fraction, dispersionand confinement loss are also discussed. The proposed THz waveguide can be effectively used for convenienttransmission of THz waves.

Low Loss Highly Birefringent Porous Core Fiber for Single Mode Terahertz Wave Guidance

Ahasan Habib,Shamim Anower 한국광학회 2018 Current Optics and Photonics Vol.2 No.3

A novel porous-core hexagonal lattice photonic crystal fiber (PCF) is designed and analyzed for efficient terahertz (THz) wave propagation. The finite element method based Comsol v4.2 software is used for numerical analysis of the proposed fiber. A perfectly matched layer boundary condition is used to characterize the guiding properties. Rectangular air-holes are used inside the core to introduce asymmetry for attaining high birefringence. By intentionally rotating the rectangular air holes of porous core structure, an ultrahigh birefringence of 0.045 and low effective material loss of 0.086 cm-1 can be obtained at the operating frequency of 0.85 THz. Moreover, single-mode properties, power fraction in air core and confinement loss of the proposed PCF are also analyzed. This is expected to be useful for wideband imaging and telecom applications.

      • Autonomous periodic stepwise pressure generator

        Md. Ahasan Ahamed(모하메드 아하산 아사메드),Sung-Jin Kim(김성진) 대한기계학회 2021 대한기계학회 춘추학술대회 Vol.2021 No.11

Control of periodic stepwise waveform of fluid pressure, flow rate, and concentration is essential for biology, chemistry, pharmacy, and medical science. Normally, dynamic off-chip controllers are extensively used to make periodic stepwise pressure applications. However, the external controller is expensive and sometimes has accuracy problems. In this study, a constant water-head-driven periodic stepwise pressure generator (PSPG) is presented. This device can generate periodic stepwise decrease pressure by using a reset unit combined with microfluidic oscillator and diode pump assembly. Pressure reduction in each step, duration time of each cycle, and pressure difference in cycle can be regulated independently.

        Rahman, Siddiqur,Huque, Fazlul,Ahasan, Shamim,Song, Hee-Jong The Korean Society of Veterinary Service 2010 韓國家畜衛生學會誌 Vol.33 No.2

Brucellosis is a major zoonosis caused by Gram negative facultative intracellular bacterial organisms of the genus Brucella that are pathogenic for a wide variety of animals and human beings. Because of its economic impact on animal health and the risk to the human population, most countries have a brucellosis control program. Brucellosis is also an economically important andprevalent disease in Bangladesh. The accurate and prompt diagnosis is very important in controlling and eradicating of the disease in animals. The present study was undertaken to determine the seroprevalence of brucellosis in cattle in Mymensingh and Patuakhali district of Bangladesh. A total of 120 serum samples were collected from the two districts along with a questionnaire related to the epidemiology of the disease. The sampleswere screened by using slow agglutination test and conformed by indirect enzyme linked immunosorbent assay. The overall seroprevalence of brucellosis in cattle was 5% and it was observed that, a higher prevalence of Brucella was found in female than male, through natural breeding than artificial insemination (AI) and animal above 4 years old are highly susceptible than younger ones. Higher prevalence was found in aborted animals in comparison with non aborted animal. Finally, the study revealed that the female animal has more susceptible to brucellosis and healthy semen should be used for AI.

Brucellosis in sheep and goat of Bogra and Mymensingh districts of Bangladesh

Rahman, Md. Siddiqur,Hahsin, Md. Ferdous Ali,Ahasan, Md. Shamim,Her, Moon,Kim, Jeong Yeong,Kang, Sang Il,Jung, Suk Chan The Korean Society of Veterinary Science 2011 大韓獸醫學會誌 Vol.51 No.4

Brucellosis is the most important bacterial disease of livestock in Bangladesh. The present study was conducted to determine the seroprevalence of brucellosis in goat and sheep in Mymensingh and Bogra districts of Bangladesh using slow agglutination test and Rose Bengal test as screening test and indirect enzyme linked immunosorbent assay as confirmatory test. Questionnaire based data on age, gender, area, client's complaint, number of animals in herds, disease history, reproductive problems such as abnormal uterine discharge, abortion or previous abortion in sheep and goat and their reproductive diseases were recorded. A total of 200 sera samples were collected from 80 sheep and 120 goats. The prevalence of brucellosis in goat was 2.50% and 1.25% in sheep. Positive reactors were only detected in female of both goat and sheep. In this study, there existed a significant association among abortion and the prevalence of brucellosis (p < 0.01). The prevalence of brucellosis in sheep and goat in Bangladesh is not negligible, and it is therefore worth considering the adoption of preventive measures.

      • Real-Time Forming Error Inspection System using Computer Vision for Small-Sized Tubes

        Hyoung-Seok Kim,Erdenesuren Naranbaatar,Sheikh Ahasan Ahammad,Yong-Hwan Bae,Byung-Ryong Lee 제어로봇시스템학회 2009 제어로봇시스템학회 국제학술대회 논문집 Vol.2009 No.8

line. So far lots of inspection processes are carried out by human workers, hence it is almost impossible to check the fault of all parts, coming from part-feeding system, with only human inspection because of time limitation as well as working hardship. Therefore, most of manual inspection is applied to specific samples, not all coming parts, and manual inspection neither guarantee consistent measuring accuracy nor decrease working time. Thus, in order to improve the measuring speed and accuracy of the inspection, a computer-aided measuring and analysis method is highly needed. In this paper, firstly a computer-vision-based small-sized tube inspection algorithm is proposed, where the tube imagesof front-view and side-view are acquired by CCD cameras. To reduce the vision processing time efficiently, a modified Hough transform is applied for calculate the geometry of straight line segments. A line-scanning method is adopted to calculate the center points of the inner and outer diameters. Secondly, the proposed algorithms are verified by the developed inspection machine. Finally, it is concluded that the proposed algorithm can be applied successfully to the inspection machine to guarantee the inspection requirements demanded from the company.
