Air Pollution in Indian Cities and Comparison of MLR, ANN and CART Models for Predicting PM10 Concentrations in Guwahati, India

Abhishek Dutta,Wanida Jinsart 한국대기환경학회 2021 Asian Journal of Atmospheric Environment (AJAE) Vol.15 No.1

Indian cities are increasingly becoming susceptible to PM10 induced health hazards, thereby creating concern for the country’s policymakers. Air pollution is engulfing the comparatively smaller cities as the rapid pace of urbanization, and economic development seem not to lose steam. A review of air pollution of 28 cities of India, which includes tier-I, II, and III cities of India, found to have grossly violated both WHO (World Health Organisation) and NAAQS (National Ambient Air Quality Standard of India) in respect of acceptable daily average PM10 (particulate matter less than 10 μm in aerodynamic diameter) concentrations by a wide margin. Predicting the city level PM10 concentrations in advance and accordingly initiate prior actions is an acceptable solution to save the city dwellers from PM10 induced health hazards. Predictive ability of three models, linear Multiple Linear Regression (MLR), nonlinear Multi-Layer Perceptron class of Artificial Neural Network (MLP ANN), and nonlinear Classification and Regression Tree (CART), for one day ahead PM10 concentration forecasting of tier-II Guwahati city, were tested with 2016-2018 daily average observed climate data, PM10, and gaseous pollutants. The results show that the non-linear algorithm MLP with feedforward backpropagation network topologies of ANN class, gives the best prediction value compared with linear MLR and nonlinear CART model. Therefore, ANN (MLP) approach may be useful to effectively derive a predictive understanding of one day ahead PM10 concentration level and thus provide a tool to the policymakers for initiating in situ measures to curb air pollution and improve public health.

Role of Fermentation in Improving Nutritional Quality of Soybean Meal - A Review

Mukherjee, Runni,Chakraborty, Runu,Dutta, Abhishek Asian Australasian Association of Animal Productio 2016 Animal Bioscience Vol.29 No.11

Soybean meal (SBM), a commonly used protein source for animal feed, contains anti-nutritional factors such as trypsin inhibitor, phytate, oligosaccharides among others, which limit its utilization. Microbial fermentation using bacteria or fungi has the capability to improve nutritional value of SBM by altering the native composition. Both submerged and solid state fermentation processes can be used for this purpose. Bacterial and fungal fermentations result in degradation of various anti-nutritional factors, an increase in amount of small-sized peptides and improved content of both essential and non-essential amino acids. However, the resulting fermented products vary in levels of nutritional components as the two species used for fermentation differ in their metabolic activities. Compared to SBM, feeding non-ruminants with fermented SBM has several beneficial effects including increased average daily gain, improved growth performance, better protein digestibility, decreased immunological reactivity and undesirable morphological changes like absence of granulated pinocytotic vacuoles.

Ultrasonic modified corn pith for the sequestration of dye from aqueous solution

        R. Jothirani,P. Senthil Kumar,A. Saravanan,Abishek S. Narayan,Abhishek Dutta 한국공업화학회 2016 Journal of Industrial and Engineering Chemistry Vol.39 No.-

In this research, the ultrasonic waves were used to prepare the novel material from corn pith for theremoval of malachite green (MG) dye from aqueous solution. The prepared material was characterizedby BET, FTIR, SEM, TGA and XRD analyses. Adsorption system followed Freundlich and pseudo-first orderkinetic models. Langmuir monolayer capacity of the adsorbent was calculated as 488.3 mg g 1 whichwas higher as compared with other local materials. Adsorption thermodynamics was found to beexothermic and spontaneous. The adsorber was designed using Freundlich model. The novel materialshowed good adsorption capacity for sequestration of MG dye from wastewater.

Influence of ultrasonication on preparation of novel material for heavy metal removal from wastewater

Senthil Kumar Ponnusamy,Saravanan Anbalagan,Sundar Rajan Panneer Selvam,Abishek Sankaranarayan,Abhishek Dutta 한국화학공학회 2016 Korean Journal of Chemical Engineering Vol.33 No.9

The present research introduces a new concept on rapid removal of Pb(II) ions from wastewater using novel agro-based material. The two types of materials such as sulfuric acid modified Caryota urens seeds (SMCUS) and ultrasonic assisted Caryota urens seeds (UACUS) were prepared and performance was compared for Pb(II) ions removal. The functional groups available on the C. urens were discussed by using FT-IR report. Adsorption influencing parameters such as initial metal ion concentration, pH, contact time, adsorbent dosage and temperature were studied to predict the optimum conditions. Several isotherm and kinetic models were applied to examine the experimental data. The present adsorption-adsorbate system best obeys the Freundlich and pseudo-first-order models. Langmuir monolayer capacity of the SMCUS and UACUS for Pb(II) ions was found to be 93.7 and 175.9mg/g, respectively. Thermodynamic parameters explain that the adsorption of Pb(II) ions was spontaneous and exothermic.
