This paper is concerned with shift phenomena of English countable noun plural form into Korean plurals. Since Korean has two types of noun plural form such as ‘-tul and zero form, the translator has an option to choose either of them for English countable plural nouns. The analysis will be based on the parallel corpus of the American novel The Catcher in the Rye and its translation by Kim and Yeom (2005). This paper shows that the translation work in questions follows the pattern of Korean original text as far as animacy is concerned with the distribution of Korean plural forms. It will confirm Toury s (1995) acceptability hypothesis in translation and show that simplification works in the translation work.

One of the biggest concerns of modern society is the inadequate care of the elderly. While the average life expectancy has been extended, the care of the elderly seems to have been neglected mainly because the feeling of responsibility by the family members has been diminished due to the social changes such as nuclear family system. Thereby, the care of the elderly is closely related to the elder abuse, which becomes a major social phenomenon of today. Martin MacDonagh's The Beauty Queen of Leenane (1996) appears to describe the issue accurately. The main purpose of this study is to analyze the issue of elder care in the play, on the basis of the ecological theory suggested by Allan Kemp. The result will provide another dimension to understand the play better and the social phenomenon as well, reflecting that literature is the most reliable barometer of the society. 인간을 변화시키는 힘: Caesar Must Die 연구

A field of drama therapy is a relatively new form of remedy using drama or play to help people with some mental troubles. Caesar Must Die is an adaptation from William Shakespeare’s The Tragedy of Julius Caesar, in which the prisoners of an Italian prison start preparing to perform the play, rehearsing it, and finally finishing the successful performance. The aim of the project is to educate and rehabilitate the prisoners more effectively through cultivating artistic sensibility by the artistic experience. It turns out that the prisoners-actors enjoy the experience more than the director expected, by concentrating on the roles given to them and trying to convey the meaning they got from the Shakespearean lines. After the final, successful performance, the participants of the performance find themselves moved far from what they were before the project began. They have carried out the painful process of healing through looking back on their painful past, reflecting their true self and realizing the meaning of their lives. As a result, the film shows that drama therapy can be a most effective means to heal inner scars of people as well as to show the real power of art in every human being. (Chungang Univeristy)

Eugene O`Neill`s first concern in his dramatic world was the relationship between man and god. Although the gods in both the mythological and Biblical worlds were dead, and science and materialism had failed to take their places, still, O`Neill was always acutely conscious of “the Force behind.” He kept trying to find this Force which would provide his heroes with universal and even divine significance so that his tragedies could bring about the same effects that Greek tragedies had on audiences of antiquity. O`Neill`s quest for “the Force behind” also has roots in his personal need to settle his traumatic love-hate relationship with his mother through his writing. His guilt-stricken feelings for his mother became the personal reason for seeking the “Force behind.” This study focuses on one of his last plays, A Moon for the Misbegotten, especially on how the play is related to the Orestes myth, how the myth helps us better understand the play, and finally, how O`Neill achieves his dramatic quest through the re-enactment of the myth in the play.
한국어 무표형 명사의 단,복수 해석에 대한 화용적 분석

The purpose of this paper is to pragmatically account for how a Korean nonplural nominal known as a bare noun without ``tul`` is interpreted as singular or plural depending on context. Unlike other approaches to it, we claim that the plural or singular interpretation of a nonplural nominal is not specified in the lexicon: it means it has only a number index in the lexicon. The value of the number index of a bare noun is assigned or determined by various ways. When it is modified by a numeral expression, the numeral expression assigns the value of the number. If not accompanied by any numeral expression, no matter internal or external, then the value is given pragmatically. It has been observed that if the referent(s) of a bare noun is interpreted as being definite, there is a tendency for it to be interpreted as singular. This phenomenon is analyzed to be caused by scalar implicature based on the scalar relation of information: ``tul`` plural marker is informationally stronger than the zero marker of a bare noun. On the other hand, the fixed singular interpretation of a bare noun modified by a deictic determiner such as ``i`` ``ku`` or ``ceo`` is also pragmatically accounted for as a short-circuited implicature.
