Fossil fuel such as oil and natural gas has been used and will be no longer supplied enough to demand in the beginning of thisg century. The use of the fuel makes a lot of environmental pollution to threaten human being's health especially in big cities and produces a lot of $CO_{2}$ to make green house effect of the earth. It is the time to use clean fuel such as hydrogen to prevent the expected energy crisis and the pollution. A new engine such as fuel cell can be used instead of the conventional internal combustion engine with 2 to 3 times higher efficiency of the conventional engine. The fuel cell uses hydrogen and oxygen and produces electric energy and pure water, which is a calm engine without air pollution. In big cities the city buses and the taxies powered by hydrogen fuel cells are suggested to be operated for clean environment. The energy and cost analysis performed for hydrogen and electricity production from wind power and solar cell.

From wood to coal and petroleum, mankind has used various fuel. Since using such fuel, mankind has developed power source of mechanism. We obtain numerous power from caloric force. Present energy supply is based on the fossil fuel. Fossil fuel has high energy density and is convenient for transportation and storage. Human being prepared countermeasure of energy economy, high energy efficiency and substitution energy for limits of fossil fuel. High energy efficiency among them is very important. This research will improve total output by physical exergy recovery of LH₂-fuel cell system.

Researches to control water content of Polymer Electrolyte Membrane(PEM) of fuel cell are actively performed for increasing performance & durability of fuel cell. This research to control water content focused on detection of PEM impedance. In this paper, the detection unit of fuel cell impedance based on AC current impedance method is proposed. Bi-directional DC/DC converter is designed to generate AC in detection unit of fuel cell impedance. The validity of proposed detection unit of fuel cell impedance is verified by test results in the fuel cell stack and FCEV.

Not only study of fuel cell performance but study of fuel cell application is very important, therefore these studies were paralleled together for the commercialization of exciting power generation. The objective of this study is to determine the characteristics of shaft power and efficiency as a function of rpm and to compare natural convection air method to forced air method. From these results, performance of forced air was better than that of natural convection air because it enables to improve mass transportation by increasing air flow rate. With decreasing shaft power, efficiency of fuel cell decreases remarkably because dc motor drives at the low range of efficiency. Fuel cell powered vehicle has to be driven considering efficiency and shaft power. It should be driven at 35-45% of efficiency and 0.55-0.75v/cell.

Resistivity changes and intermetallic growth after thermal aging of Matter tin-plated copper sheet for current collector in fuel cell were investigated to survey the diffusion of Cu into Sn in interface and surface. The results show that the intermetallic growth and resistivity depended on thermal aging temperature and dwell time. In Sn plate on a Cu substrate, Cu6Sn5(μ) and Cu3Sn(ε) intermetallics layer were formed at plate/substrate interface. Cu6Sn5(μ) intermetallics layer gradually changed Cu3Sn(ε). Moreover Cu get through Sn layer and it was diffused in the surface at 200℃. On the other hand, only Cu3Sn(ε) intermetallics layer were formed at plate/substrate interface at 300℃. Consequently, the intermetallics formation, thermal condition and oxidation of surface, causes increase in the resistivity of Tin-plated copper sheet.

본 연구에서는 수소 연료전지의 엔드플레이트와 외부 연결 부분의 금속을 진동시험기를 이용하여 접촉저항을 측정하였다. 수소 연료전지의 집접판에서의 전류밀도의 변화와 온도 분포의 변화를 비교해 볼 수 있었으며, 접촉저항을 측정 할 수 있었다. 진동시험기는 5∼50 ㎐의 범위까지 설계하였으며 진동에 대한 접촉저항의 변화도 확인 할 수 있었다.
