        죠르지오 아감벤의 “시의 끝”으로 본 김명미와 오규원의 시세계

        This paper explores and examines philosophical meanings and significance of ‘the end of poem’ utilizing Giorgio Agamben’s poetics in his The End of the Poem as a theoretical scaffolding. The paper delves into two poetic worlds: a Korean American poet, Myung Mi Kim’s avant-garde poetic world and a Korean poet, Oh, Kyu-Won’s philosophical and satirical poetic world. Agamben, tracing the genealogy of poetic meanings of conflict between sound and sense, enjambment, caesura, and the end of the poem in Western, especially Italian poems, claims that enjambment is a mark of existential significance of poem and that the end of poem signals the end of sound and meter as well as the beginning of philosophical thoughts. Accordingly, the paper claims that Myung Mi Kim in Penury unfolds the philosophical dialectic of the sound and the sense, which disinters a skeleton of fragmentary words saturated with speaker’s painful experience of war and exploitations perpetrated by global capitalism and xenophobia. Meanwhile, Oh, Kyu-Won’s poems reveal philosophical meanings of the clash between pure language and reified language which results in philosophical inquiries of the meaning of the end of poem.

        한국계 미국인 남성 작가 소설들에 나타나는 식민지/탈식민주의 정체성 탐색

        This paper aims to explore how Korean American male writers construct and deconstruct the Korean American male subjectivity by closely reading and analyzing three novels: Richard Kim’s Lost Names, Younghill Kang’s East Goes West, and Chang Rae Lee’s Gesture Life. These fictions are selected on purpose to reflect chronological changes of Korean male subjectivity in literature. As theoretical scaffoldings, I used postcolonial theories, especially Homi Bhabha’s concept of ambivalence. In Lost Names, an unnamed Korean boy, the protagonist and the narrator of the novel, experiences colonial violence to find his way of forming decolonial subjectivity by resisting it; yet, this subjectivity cannot but embed the fragility of the subjectivity imbued by nationalism. Kang, Younghill’s East Goes West critically deconstructs cosmopolitan dream of a Korean American male, Chungpa Han, by showing how farcical it is regarded in American society where colonialism is contextualized with racism and capitalism. Last, Chang Rae Lee’s A Gesture Life reveals how Korean American subjectivity is compromised by postcolonial ambivalence that lacks its resistance, which transforms Hata, the protagonist, into a pathologically faked life, mere gesture without authentic humanity.

        밀턴의 paradise Lost 에서 재현된 사탄의 숭고미 분석

        This paper aims to clarify the significance of sublimity in Western literary tradition via exploring various philosophical understandings of the sublimity. To demonstrate this, I use Milton's Paradise Lost and explore the world of sublimity in his work, especially the part where Satan emerges. Regardless of his theological signification, Satan represents a hero who fell and set out a journey to restore what he lost, which causes the sublimity in Milton's magnificent work, Paradise Lost. To analyze this, I mostly focus on Burke's idea of sublimity and its properties ― vastness, obscurity, infinity, uniformity, and magnificent. To some extent, Burke's idea of sublimity reveals the most profound aesthetic aspect of sublimity in Western thought. With Burke's analysis, I also include aesthetic idea of sublimity from Kant and Schopenhaller's works. By intergating and incorporating their ideas in aesthetic history, I demonstrate how Milton's Paradise Lost has affected other works afterward. In conclusion, I claim that the vision of Satan in Milton's Paradise Lost lies in the context of the heroic sublimity that is a part of Western aesthetics.

        초국가주의시대 미국 문학 속 탈북난민 내러티브 연구

        This study aims to research on how the narratives on the experience North Korean refugees have gained in global space have been represented in literary works published in the U.S. This essay theoretically proposes that turmoils North Korean refugees have gone through after they crossed the borders unfold the interstices in transnationalism. Transnationalism, once acclaimed as a plenary term to expound the globalism, turns out to be a chaotic and hostile discourse where borders and international politics operate to transform refugees, especially North Korean refugees to ‘homo sacers.’ Deconstructing Kantian vision of cosmopolitan global space, the dire situation North Korean refugees face proves that hospitality is deterred. The essay utilizes two literary works; The Girl with Seven Names written by Hyeonseo Lee and Krys Lee’s Drifting House. In The Girl with Seven Names, Lee testifies her transnational experience in which she escapes from North Korea and then goes through a lot of atrocious situations in China and finally asks for an asylum in South Korea. After Lee settles down in South Korea, she experiences another transnational adventure to take her mother and brother to South Korea. Krys Lee’s Drifting House, a collection of short stories, delineates how North Koreans escape and get healed through spiritual and hospitable communication in the U.S.

        면대면 신문과 비대면 신문간의 거짓말 단서로서 준언어행위 비교연구

        본 연구는 면대면(FtF)와 비대면 VCMC신문에서 나타나는 준언어행위의 차이를 살펴보고 이러한 차이가 거짓말의 단서가 되는지를 실험을 통해 탐색하고자 했다. 총 97명이 실험에 참여했으며, 실험참여자는 정해진 시나리오에 따라 현금 20만원을 절취하거나 절취하지 않는 조건에 무작위로 할당되었다. 실험참여자는 현금 절취와 관련된 행위를 수행한 후 할당된 조건에 따라 FtF 혹은 스카이프로 진행되는 VCMC 신문을 받게 된다. 신문 질문항목에는 현금절취와 관련 없는 일상생활을 묻는 기준질문과 현금절취와 직접적으로 관련된 핵심질문 등이 포함되었다. 실험참여자에게는 기준질문에는 진실을 진술하고 핵심질문에는 현금절취 여부와 관계없이 현금을 절취하지 않았다고 진술하도록 요청되었다. 신문 전 과정은 녹화되었으며 이후 실험참여자의 준언어행위(응답지연시간, 발화시간, 발화속도, 발화실수)가 코딩되어 분석되었다. 주요 결과는 다음과 같다. 먼저, 채널에 따른 준언어행위 차이는 응답지연길이, 응답길이, 발화실수와 같은 일부 준언어행위에서만 나타났다. FtF보다 VCMC에서 응답지연길이, 응답길이, 발화실수가 증가하는 경향이 나타났다. 둘째 진실성에 따른 준언어행위 차이는 휴지기와 발화실수와 같은 일부 준언어 행위에서만 나타났는데, 거짓을 말할 때 휴지기와 발화실수를 억제하는 것으로 나타났다. 이러한 결과는 채널에 따라 일부 준언어행위의 차이가 나타나며 결과적으로 일부 준언어행위가 거짓말의 단서가 될 수 있다는 점을 시사하고 있다. This study attempted to examine the differences in paralinguistic behaviors that appear in FtF and VCMC interrogation, and further explored whether these differences can be deception cues. In total 97 college and graduate students participated in the mock theft of money experiment and were randomly assigned to four conditions (steal or not to steal ₩200,000 cash, and FtF and VCMC interrogation). Participant were then asked to steal the money or not to steal the money according to the condition they were assigned. Then Participants had a FtF or VCMC interrogation with an interrogator. The interrogator asked the participants two types of questions which were about both participants’ everyday life (baseline questions) and their behavior related to the stolen money (critical questions). When responding to the critical questions, participants should convince the interrogator that they did not steal the money regardless of whether they had stolen the money or not. Accordingly, if participants stole a money they would tell the lie, if not they would tell the truth. Participants’ paralinguistic behavior was fully audio recorded and used for coding and analysis. Participants’ paralinguistic behavior was calculated and analyzed in three different questions (one baseline question and two critical questions). Results reveal that first, differences in paralinguistic behaviors in accordance to channels were found only in some paralinguistic behaviors such as response latency, response length, and speech errors. Response latency, response length, and ignition errors tended to increase in VCMC rather than FtF. Second, the difference in paralinguistic behavior according to veracity was found only in pauses and speech errors, and when telling a lie, the pauses and speech errors were found to be suppressed.         Recently, the necessity for the structural evaluation of existing bridges becomes urgent for safety considerations. This paper describes the work conducted on the strength evaluation of existing concrete bridges. A new equation was proposed to determining the load-rating of existing concrete bridges. The proposed load-rating euqation applied to existing test data and the results were compared with those calculated by the current evaluation specification.

        컴퓨터 매개 커뮤니케이션에서 정서표현에 영향을 미치는 요인

        본 연구는 컴퓨터 매개 커뮤니케이션에서 정서표현이 정서의 형태, 성별, 관찰가능성 · 가시가능성에 따라 어떻게 나타나는지를 실험을 통해 규명하고자 했다. 실험을 위해 일대일 온라인 채팅 맥락에서 관찰가능성의 유무(채팅상대방이 채팅자를 볼 수 있는지의 여부)와 가시가능성의 유무(채팅자가 채팅상대방의 얼굴을 볼 수 있는지의 여부)로 네 가지 조건을 만들었다. 80명(남자 40명, 여자 40명)의 대학생이 실험에 참여했고 각 채팅 조건에 각각 남녀 10명씩 무작위로 할당되어 가상의 상대방과 온라인 채팅을 진행했다. 가상의 채팅상대자는 채팅 중에 슬픔과 분노의 자극물을 무작위 순서로 실험참여자에게 전달했으며, 이 때 실험참여자에게 나타나는 정서표현을 정서표현규칙, 정서표현의 적합성, 얼굴표정의 세 가지 방식으로 측정되었다. 분석결과는 다음과 같이 나타났다. 정서표현사용규칙은 정서의 형태에 따라 다르게 나타났지만 성별과 관찰가능성 · 가시가능성에 따른 차이는 나타나지 않았다. 반면, 정서표현의 적합성은 정서의 형태와 관찰가능성 · 가시가능성의 영향을 받는 것으로 나타났다. 마지막으로 얼굴표정은 관찰가능성의 영향을 받는 것으로 나타났다. 이와 같은 결과는 컴퓨터 매개 커뮤니케이션에서도 면대면 커뮤니케이션과 유사한 방식으로 정서표현이 이루어지고 있음을 의미한다. This experimental study examines whether emotional display behaviors in computer mediated communication vary on gender, the type of emotions, and observability/visibility. The experiment creates four different conditions manipulating observability (whether or not participants can be observed by their chat partner) and visibility (whether or not participants can see their chat partner) in a context of online chat. A total of 80 college students (40 males and 40 females) participates in this experiment where participants are randomly and equally assigned to one of the four different conditions. In an assigned chat condition, participants are asked to read consecutively two emotional stories which are designed to arouse angry and sad emotions. While chatting, participants’ emotional behaviors are measured by the use of emotional display rules, appropriateness of emotional display, and facial expression. Results reveal that the use of emotional display rules is not affected by gender or observability/visibility but affected by the type of emotions. However, the appropriateness of participants’ emotional display are affected by the type of emotion and observability/visibility. In addition, participants’ facial expression is affected by observability. The findings suggest that emotional display behaviors in computer mediated communication show in a similar way as do in face-to-face communication.

        세계 문학과 관계의 시학

        This paper aims to suggest a new perspective for rethinking the world literature utilizing Edouard Glissant’s theory of commonplace and its theoretical complexities. Though various contemporary theories such as Franco Moretti’s “distant reading” purveys fertile and centralized understanding of the world literature, its asymmetrical and biased perspective adumbrates the third world literature’s uniqueness and the interconnected relations within it. In contrast, Glissant suggests such concepts as opacity, depth, chaos-monde, errancy, poetics of relation, and totality representing multifaceted diversity and its literary relations in Caribbean literature heavily mediated by traumatic historical atrocities (i.e. repetitive tyrannies, colonialism, diaspora, etc.) to delineate a future-perfect redemption. He also suggests archipelago as commonplace (lieux communs) that as a form of mediation reflect Caribbean history and geography as well as its literary commonality that pave a new way to the understanding of the world literature. Also, this paper closely reads and analyzes Edwidge Danticat’s decentralized postmodern or postcolonial novel, The Dew Breaker, in order to recount Haitians’ traumatic experiences and possibilities of their redemption during (post)tyrannical and (post)colonial era under the lens of Glissant’s theory.
