Droplet characterization of high-flowrate water electrospray using shadowgraph image analysis

Differently from conventional electrospray studies on the ‘cone-jet mode’ to produce homogenous droplets, a wet electrostatic precipitator requires high flowrate which shows significantly different spray patterns and droplet sizes. Since the droplet are distributed much sparser than cone-jet electrospray, this study focused on the high flowrate water electrospray characteristics. The size measurement methods were compared between shadowgraph and phase Doppler anemometry (PDA). In shadowgraph method, the droplet sizes were measured from the electrospray photos through multi-stage image processing algorithm. PDA failed to determine most of the large droplets, whereas shadowgraph measured all droplets larger than 20μm. In terms of the corresponding volume measured using the diameter distribution, small sized droplets had a very small effect on the total atomization. This study proffers the appropriate method to measure the distribution of large size droplets in a disperse high flowrate electrospray, which may provide essential parameters for wet electrospray precipitator design.

Although most patients prefer dying at home, patients whose condition rapidly becomes critical need care in the intensive care unit (ICU), and it is rare for them to die at home with their families. Therefore, interest in hospice and palliative care for patients in the ICU is increasing. Hospice and palliative care (PC) is necessary for all patients with life-threatening diseases. The following patients need palliative care in the ICU: patients with chronic critical illnesses who need tracheostomy, percutaneous gastrostomy tube, and extracorporeal life support; patients aged 80 years or older; stage 4 cancer patients; patients with specific acute diseases with a poor prognosis (e.g., anoxic brain injury and intracerebral hemorrhage requiring mechanical ventilation); and patients for whom the attending physician expects a poor prognosis. There are two PC models—a consultative model and an integrative model—in the ICU setting. Since these two models have advantages and disadvantages, it is necessary to apply the model that best fits each hospital’s circumstances. Furthermore, interdisciplinary decision-making between the ICU care team and PC specialists should be strengthened to increase the provision of hospice and palliative care services for patients expected to have poor outcomes and their families.

Manufacturers are making every effort to reduce new car development period, in order to meet customer requests in time of need. To reduced development period, CAE method is used in most fields of vehicle performance. Especially, as for durability performance of body structure, it takes generally long time to finish physical validation using RLDA obtained from proving ground considering time of hardware vehicle building and testing. Also, there are many difficulties in prediction fatigue life of body structure because it is hard to get account fatigue parameter of material and accurate loads on body structure before physical RLDA test. However, CAE method has strong benefits to predict before physical test, under the condition that there is well-correlated CAE model including dynamic loads calculated from virtual dynamic loads. This paper shows the durability CAE method explaining how to use virtual loads and to correlate with multi-channel durability LAB test. And this paper is trying to propose virtual validation methods to predict specific part of body structure fatigue life using virtual loads.

A phenomenon of which liquid atomized into small droplets when subjected to high electrostatic potential difference is called electrospray. The cone-jet mode, which generates a stable cone and fine monodisperse droplets has been mostly focused. However, flowrate condition of the cone-jet mode were limited at only few microliter/min scale to prevent corona discharge. In the electrospray mode for dust removal, high flowrate condition about several milliliter/min is used to obtain sufficient liquid-to-gas ratio. In this high flowrate condition, the applied voltage required to atomize the liquid increases, and 2D and 3D spraying mode that have not been shown in previous studies appears. In this study, the electrospray droplet diameter at high flowrate condition was measured using a high-speed camera. Image processing algorithm was employed in order to measure the droplet diameter from pixel of the original image. Bias by the difference in the probability of being included in the image depending on the droplet velocity, was corrected using object tracking method. Corrected droplet diameter distribution of each spraying mode under high flowrate condition was measured.

Cone-jet mode of electrospray was studied for diverse applications for the generation of uniform droplets. For water electrospray, there is a controversy on the contribution of corona discharge on a stable con-jet mode. For typical electrospray fluids, corona discharge occurs in higher voltage than the onset voltages of corresponding con-jet mode. However for water electrospray, due to high surface tension of water droplets, the voltage range of the con-jet mode reaches near or higher than the corona onset voltage. In this study, the cone-jet mode was observed in a water electrospray charged in negative HVDC (High Voltage Direct Current), and the droplet diameter was measured using a shadowgraph technique. Through the geometric standard deviation and distribution of the spray droplet size, the existence of a stable cone-jet mode under corona discharge environment was shown by the monodisperse distribution of water droplets.
