        In this paper the authors tried to explicate from applying n-person game theory that the result of simple majority rule depends on the financing methods of the respective project, the nature of benefits from the project, and on the extent of the allowance of side payments. We could particularly verify that if side payments were allowed, then it would be possible to eliminate or reduce severe social wastes from simple majority rule.

      • 大學敎育熱望에 관한 경험적 연구 : 사회구조적 요인 및 자아존중감을 중심으로

        The main purposes of the study were to analyze: 1) the effects of family environment, school environment, I.Q., academic performance (grades in both middle school and high school) and sex on self-esteem and the college educational aspiration of the high school students ; and 2) the effects of self-esteem on their college education aspiration. In this study it was assumed that family environment, school environment, I.Q., academic performance and sex were treated as the independent variables, self-esteem as the intervening variable and college educational aspiration as the dependent variable. Family environment variable includes the socioeconomic star us of parents and socialization pattern of parents (affection-rejection, self-control-others -control, and achievement--non-achievement). School environment variables consider the influence of teachers, peer influence and school curriculum. Data for the study were collected through the use of self-administered questionnaires from a sample of 715 high school students in Pusan, Korra in August and September, 1984. The results of the study are summarized as follows : (1) There was no effect of self-esteem on the college educational aspiration of high school students. (2) Among the independent variables the school curriculum was the most important variable in determining the aspiration of college education. (3) Grade in the middle school, sex and socialization pattern of parents (achievement-non-achievement dimension) were also important variables in determining the aspiration of college education.

        The secondary school equalization policy in Korea was initially adopted to curb excessive out-of-school studies of the junior and senior high school students. It failed to accomplish its goal in this regard, however Rather, that policy exacerbated the excessiveness of out-of-school studies. We explain why in this paper.

        [PROTOCOL] Structural analysis of N-/O-glycans assembled on proteins in yeasts

        Protein glycosylation, the most universal and diverse posttranslational modification, can affect protein secretion, stability, and immunogenicity. The structures of glycans attached to proteins are quite diverse among different organisms and even within yeast species. In yeast, protein glycosylation plays key roles in the quality control of secretory proteins, and particularly in maintaining cell wall integrity. Moreover, in pathogenic yeasts, glycans assembled on cell-surface glycoproteins can mediate their interactions with host cells. Thus, a comprehensive understanding of protein glycosylation in various yeast species and defining glycan structure characteristics can provide useful information for their biotechnological and clinical implications. Yeast-specific glycans are a target for glyco-engineering; implementing human-type glycosylation pathways in yeast can aid the production of recombinant glycoproteins with therapeutic potential. The virulenceassociated glycans of pathogenic yeasts could be exploited as novel targets for antifungal agents. Nowadays, several glycomics techniques facilitate the generation of species- and strain-specific glycome profiles and the delineation of modified glycan structures in mutant and engineered yeast cells. Here, we present the protocols employed in our laboratory to investigate the N- and O-glycan chains released from purified glycoproteins or cell wall mannoproteins in several yeast species.

        Functional Characterization of Extracellular Chitinase Encoded by the YlCTS1 Gene in a Dimorphic Yeast Yarrowia lipolytica

        The hemiascomycetes yeast Yarrowia lipolytica is a dimorphicyeast with alternating yeast and mycelia forms. Bioinformaticanalysis revealed the presence of three putativechitinase genes, YlCTS1, YlCTS2, and YlCTS3, in the Y. lipolyticagenome. Here, we demonstrated that the protein ofYlCTS1 (YlCts1p), which contains an N-terminal secretionsignal peptide, a long C-terminal Ser/Thr-rich domain, anda chitin-binding domain, is a homologue to Saccharomycescerevisiae chitinase 1 (ScCts1p). Deletion of YlCTS1 remarkablyreduced extracellular endochitinase activity in the culturesupernatant of Y. lipolytica and enhanced cell aggregation,suggesting a role of YlCts1p in cell separation as ScCts1pdoes in S. cerevisiae. However, loss of YlCts1p function didnot affect hyphal formation induced by fetal bovine serumaddition. The mass of YlCts1p was dramatically decreasedby jack bean α-mannosidase digestion but not by PNGase Ftreatment, indicating that YlCts1p is modified only by Omannosylationwithout N-glycosylation. Moreover, the O-glycanprofile of YlCts1p was identical to that of total cell wallmannoproteins, supporting the notion that YlCts1p can beused as a good model for studying O-glycosylation in thisdimorphic yeast.
