An Extended Centering Theoretic Approach to the Recovery of Omitted Constituents in Korean Dialogues
이동영 사단법인 한국언어학회 2003 언어학 Vol.0 No.35
In Korean utterance constituents such as a subject NP and an object NP are frequently omitted when they can be recognized from dialogue context. Even in the dialogue-initial utterance a constituent may be omitted. This paper proposes that to find the referent of such missing constituents in Korean dialogue appropriately the rules such as initiation rule, vocative utterance rule, deletion rule, parallelism rule, and overriding rule be added to the existing Centering Theory (CT). This paper also shows that the extended CT based on our proposal is highly successful even in face-to-face Korean dialogue that is randomly collected from a daily soap opera.

Executive Information System (EIS) is designed to help executives make decisions and to increase the efficiency of business in the keen competition for information together with rapid development of information technology. EIS has not been quite successfully used to its fullest potential in Korea. The objective of this study is to go beyond the traditional capabilities of EIS and to make practical use of EIS to help executives to make optimal decision on their own with information available in the existing EIS. It presents a system architecture for integrating EIS with Dicision Support System (DSS) based on the results of a survey to examine the need for such integration. For this survey, 83 executives of 16 domestic companies in separate industries in Korea which adopt EIS have been surveyed to present validity on the integration of EIS and DSS. The results of the survey for validity analysis are as follows. First, more than half the executives surveyed said that they were satisfied with EIS while most of those who surveyed said that they were negative about the information and timeliness of the results. Second, executive gave, on the whole, a positive answer when asked if End User Computing (EUC) is necessary and helpful to their job, but they were rather pessimistic about the efficiency of EUC. They noted that a support group in company is the most important factor to make EUC efficient while the most crucial factor to decrease the efficiency of EUC is the lack of CEO's consideration and support of EUC. Third, the survey on the integration of EIS and DSS revealed that EIS is not being fully utilized. The executives indicated that usefulness of EIS depends largely on the executives' perception of the information system. It can be inferred that executives themselves want the integration of EIS and DSS from the fact that said they were optimistic about the potential of integration. A new system model has been introduced by integration of existing EIS and DSS, and the point of the model is that it enables executive to simulate various alternatives based on information from EIS, to verify data, and to give orders by communication with Model Base through DDE channel. And this system has been designed to meet five conditions, including time, space, men, information, and personality, to realize EIS which copes with needs and demands of executives. This study aims at paving a new way for domestic EIS and is expected to renew executives' attitude toward EIS and to contribute to the promotion of EIS efficiency.
