In the Korean language there is a phonological phenomenon called umlaut when back vowel is changed into front vowel. An opinion that phonological change of this umlaut is only diachronic but synchronic has prevailed for a long time in schools. The purpose of this paper is to study the umlaut which occurs within Lexical Morpheme Structure that can not be said to have been investigated in studying umlaut which occure within Lexical Morpheme Structure that can not be said to have been investigated in studying umlatut until now and the problem related with that. In the method of studying I regarded '아비 '아비∼애비' which is widely used in this aspect of study as the basic materials and introduced the theory of transformational generative grammar and studied the realistic appearance of materials rather than phonological theory. Through this study I came to the jfellowing results. First of all, the opinion that pure phonological regressive assimilation exist in the '아비 '아비∼애비, ect. should be amended. Secondly, synchronic umalut existence theory also should be examimed again. Then, the problem which should be chosen in the '아비 '아비∼애비, etc. must be treated from the point of syntactic view rather than from the point of phonological view.

An adverse criticism has been prevailing over the problems as to the Korean Romanization. Since the Ministry of Education announced its proposed modification in 1978, the Korean Romanization that was once decided early in 1959 has been controversial more than ever. Of late the Ministry seems to accept a suggestion that McCune-Reischauer System may be substituted for the existing Romanization which was previously authorized by the Ministry. However, I am not convinced that these problems can be solved even if the McCune-Reischauer System is adopted in place of the existing Romanization. In this connection, I have come to call attention so that the problems may be solved more prudently. And, in this paper, I will review those various systems of signs that are not in use and the differences between them.

The purpose of paper is to analyze the two tests of two 'Beautiful Stories': one is fairy tales and the other is novels for children, excepted from the text of Korean language in the second semester of the fifth grade in primary school. The above two questionaires including the texts of reading comprehension and reading speed were written by the five primary school teachers. The districts put to tests were Daijon, Chonan, A-san, Dangjin, Seosean, Seochon and so on. The 300 primary school students took part in the tests.
