Objective : This study was performed to understand about the concept of Meridian muscle which is the method explaining the muscular system in the Oriental Medicine. Methods : To reveal the concept and the course of formation of Meridian muscle, we have compared the route and symptoms of meridian muscle with the Meridian route and Symptoms of <<Zubi shi yi mai jiu jing(足臂十一脈灸經)>>, <<Yin yang shi yl mai jiu jing(陰陽十一脈灸經)>> and <<Jing Mai(經脈)>>. Results & Conclusion : 1. The concept of "Keun(筋)" reported in the <<Huangdi-Naijing(黃帝內經)>> include muscle, tendon, superficial vein and nerve. and in the <<Kyung keun(經筋)>>, it means muscle and tendon. 2. The route of the Meridian muscle is facing toward the heart or head from the limbs, and the symptoms is mostly muscle spasm or pain according to the route, therefore the symptoms of the Meridian muscle are similar to the meridian symptoms of <<Zu hi shi yi mai jiu jing(足臂十一脈灸經)>>. 3. The twelve-Meridian muscle had been made by classifying the whole muscle into twelve sections with making reference to the Meridian system.

Objective : To suggest a scientific evidence of Aconitum carmichaeli Debx. (Aconiti Lateralis Radix Preparata: ALRP) as one of cooling and heating medicines on the regulation of body temperature, we investigated the effects of ALRP water extract on hypothyroidism. Methods : Hypothyroidism was induced by intradermal injection with PTU for 4 weeks in SD rats. ALRP extract or L-thyroxine as a control drug was orally administrated for 2 weeks with PTU injection in rats. The physiological and serological parameters were measured in rats. The histological change of thyroid tissues was observed by H&E staining, and also the expression of thermo-regulating proteins was determined by Western blot in dorsal root ganglia and brain tissues of rats. Results : The administration of ALRP extract in PTU-induced hypothyroidism rats was significantly increased body temperature, but did not changes on body weight, food and water intake. ALRP extract did not effect on the levels of TSH and T4 in the hypothyroidism rats. ALRP extract significantly decreased the levels of GPT, glucose, HDL-cholesterol, LDL-cholesterol, and total cholesterol in the hypothyroidism rats. In histological observation, the enlarged epithelium and atrophic follicles with higher concentration of follicular cells on hypothyroidism were improved by ALRP extract. In addition, ALRP extract increased the expression of TRPV1 and TRPM8 ion channel proteins in hypothyroidism rats. Conclusion : These results indicate that ALRP extract can improve PTU-induced hypothyroidism through regulation of body temperature and lipid accumulation. The action mechanism of ALRP extract is related with body temperature control by thermoregulation with TRP ion channels.

What we want to report is the oriental medical treatment of eleven patients with lumbago. The patients had several features in common. First, the source of the lumbago was related to overdrinking or overeating, which is something like food damage(食傷) in oriental medicine. Second, they had symptoms of digestive trouble as well as lower back pain. Third, the R.O.M of lumbar spine was limited but there was no another special abnormality in physical examination. Fourth, singly they had muscular tenderness of Iliopsoas muscle and symptoms by Myofascial pain of Iliopsoas muscle was appeared. We assumed this sort of lumbago to be one due to retention of undigested food(食積) or damp-heat(濕熱) in oriental medicine, similar to Myofascial pain syndrome of Iliopsoas muscle in western counterpart. Acupuncture treatment was done to improve the digestive trobles according to oriental medical theory, and we saw the improvement in VAS score of lower back pain, degree of lumbar flexion, Iliopsoas muscle's tenderness and also digestive trobles. But an objective researches on the relation of lumbago due to retention of undigested food(食積) or damp-heat(濕熱) and myofascial pain syndrome of Iliopsoas muscle are quite lacking. However we think such a clinical approach could be useful in practices of oriental medicine increase in curative effect.

Below are the reports arranged from the research of ${\ll}$XiFangZiMingTangJiuJing(西方子明堂灸經)${\gg}$, which appears in the research of the main issue. ${\ll}$XiFangZiMingTangJiuJing${\gg}$ was written during the Nan-song period, approximately between 1142~1194, and was probably completed between 1142~1148. This book is the very first book specific on the moxibustion theory which exists these days and also thoroughly contains the moxibustion theory. So it contains many documents of the moxibustion theory which are missing these days. Also it's possible that the illustration presented in this book followed ${\ll}$MingTangJing(明堂經)${\gg}$ of SunSiMiao(孫思邈). The way of arranging the GuiJing(歸經) of YuZue(兪穴) and deciding the location of acupuncturing(穴位) differs from reports given by other documents. As seen above, ${\ll}$XiFangZiMingTangJiuJing${\gg}$ has a consulting value on the moxibustion theroy(灸法), both in clinic and the research of documents. So we are looking forward that there would be a more profound research continuing in the future.
