Isorhamnetin Glycosides with Free Radical and ONOO? Scavenging Activities from the Stamens of Nelumbo nucifera

        현숙경,정유정,정해영,정현아,최재수 대한약학회 2006 Archives of Pharmacal Research Vol.29 No.4

In this study, we isolated two new isorhamnetin glycosides, designated as nelumboroside A (3) and nelumboroside B (4), as well as the previously-characterized isorhamnetin glucoside (1) and isorhamnetin rutinoside (2), from the n-BuOH fraction of Nelumbo nucifera stamens. The structures of the two new compounds were then determined, using chemical and spectroscopic techniques. All isolated isorhamnetin glycosides 1-4 showed marked antioxidant activities in the DPPH, and ONOO– assays.

Angiotensin Converting Enzyme Inhibitory Benzopyranoids from Angelica gigas

        현숙경,오유나,권현주,김병우 한국식품과학회 2013 Food Science and Biotechnology Vol.22 No.6

Angiotensin converting enzyme (ACE) plays amajor role in the regulation of blood pressure. The potentialantihypertensive activity of Angelica gigas was evaluatedin vitro by its ability to inhibit ACE. A methanol extract ofA. gigas roots exerted an inhibitory effect against ACE andwas fractionated using several organic solvents, includingdichloromethane, ethyl acetate, and n-butanol. The nbutanolsoluble fraction, which manifested potent ACEinhibitory properties, was further purified via repeatedsilica gel and RP-18 column chromatography. Threebenzopyriansides, such as nodakenin (1), umbelliferone(2), and umbelliferone 6-carboxylic acid (3) were isolatedfrom A. gigas roots. Compounds 1-3 inhibited ACE activityin a dose-dependent manner, with IC50 values of 63.95±0.16,190.49±0.54, and 158.35±1.53 μM, respectively. Theinhibition kinetics analyzed by Lineweaver-Burk plotsrevealed that the three compounds showed a mixed-typeinhibition. The equilibrium constants for the inhibitor binding(Ki) of 1, 2, and 3 were estimated to be 1.56×10−4,4.70×10−4, and 2.17×10−4 M, respectively. We used A. gigas roots to isolate nodakinin, umbelliferone, andumbelliferone 6-carboxylic acid and tested their inhibitionefficacy against ACE for the first time.

문화교육을 위한 문학작품과 영화의 활용: 강의 사례

        현숙경 미래영어영문학회 2014 영어영문학 Vol.19 No.4

Living in the new media age when the screen has replaced the book as the dominant medium of communication, the old ways of teaching literature should be reconsidered and modified to meet the current cultural changes. Considering that the primary purpose of teaching literature is to help the students gain a more comprehensive understanding of the English culture, I suggest teaching literature in combination with films with equal emphasis placed on both literature and film, instead of using film as a supplement to the reading. In order for the students to gain a broader perspective of the culture, it is important to educate the students how to read and analyze both the literary and film texts and make comparison with each other. This article provides a case study of teaching comparative analysis of literary texts and their film adaptations focusing on the ways in which both the literary and film texts reflect and confront the cultural and ideological values of the society in which they were produced.

Satirizing the Gothic Text and Its Reader by Doubling and Redoubling in Poe's "The Fall of the House of Usher"

현숙경 신영어영문학회 2007 신영어영문학 Vol.36 No.-

This paper examines Poe’s satiric approach to the reader’s preconception of Gothicism and the gothic writing. Using The Fall of the House of the Usher as the exemplary story that employs Poe’s subtlety in treating the gothic, I argue that Poe’s tale is a satire on the reading of the gothic as well as the gothic text itself. Employing Peter Rabinowitz’s concept of narrative audience and authorial audience, the two types of position that the reader takes on simultaneously, I examine how the narrative audience of Poe’s story becomes slowly immersed into the storyworld and the narrator’s deranged mind while the authorial audience is aware of fictionality of the story. The gap between the narrative audience and the authorial audience continues to widen as the narrator invites the reader into Usher’s house, reaching its peak as the reader fully identifies with the narrator. But it suddenly shrinks as the reader realizes, through the narrator’s ridiculous gothic reading of The Mad Trist, that he has been hoaxed by Poe’s playful manipulation of the reader. By making the reader the double of the narrator, Poe playfully taunts the reader’s expectation of the gothic and the gothic reading.

Reconsidering Narrative Unreliability in Robert Coover’s “The Dead Queen”

        현숙경 미래영어영문학회 2019 영어영문학 Vol.24 No.1

This article reexamines the concept of narrative unreliability through the narration of Robert Coover’s first-person narrator in “The Dead Queen” and looks into the implication of narrative unreliability in the context of postmodern fairytale retellings. The article begins with the limitation of the traditional/Boothian approach to unreliable narration, which focuses on the ironic distance between the narrator and the implied author based on the “norms and values” presented through the textual signals. Such a text-centered approach is inappropriate in Coover’s “The Dead Queen,” for it overlooks the contextual fact that “The Dead Queen” is a postmodern retelling of the nineteenth-century tale. Siding with Bruno Zerwick’s conception of narrative unreliability as a culturally and historically determined phenomenon, this article then goes beyond the textual boundary and considers the contextual factors in determining narrative unreliability. It specifically looks into the moments in “The Dead Queen” in which the prince, the narrator, experiences the clash of the two historically distinct values and how he struggles to deal with the awkward coexistence of the two. In the world of retellings where the two different historical worlds are meshed together, the norms and values become problematized; hence, the task to figure out what “really happened” and the attempt to address the narrator’s narrative unreliability becomes meaningless. Through a detailed analysis of the narrator’s conflicting moments, this article calls for a new understanding of narrative unreliability in the postmodern fairytale retellings.

Civil War and Walt Whitman’s Poetic Vision

        현숙경 한국현대영어영문학회 2011 현대영어영문학 Vol.55 No.3

Ever since the first publication of Leaves of Grass in 1855, Whitman has experienced tremendous growth in his poetic vision. However, most importantly, it is the Civil War that brings him closer to achieving his vision as the all-encompassing poet of America. Before the war, Whitman was too provocative, self-confident, and inexperienced to be considered the representative poet of the nation. However, as he confronts the horrendous sights of the war and helping the dying and wounded soldiers at the hospitals, he begins to abandon his former voice, which was rooted in naive optimism, and develops a new voice developed through pain and suffering. As aptly illustrated in Drum-Taps, a collection of war poems included in Leaves of Grass, Whitman undergoes growth from an ideal romanticist and patriot who sings of the glory of the war to a comforter, a healer, a dresser of the amputated nation as well as the wounded soldiers. It is through the Civil War that he has finally lived up to the self-appointed name of the American bard.

문학텍스트를 통한 문화연구: 다양한 버전의 「백설공주」 비교 연구

        현숙경 한국현대영어영문학회 2019 현대영어영문학 Vol.63 No.4

As a way to keep up with the fast-paced world of today where diverse media and texts divert our attention from the traditional literary texts, I propose various versions of fairytales as useful literary texts for cultural studies. This article examines three versions of “Snow White” and shows how each version with distinct generic styles, provide multiple materials in which to examine the social and cultural traits of the periods in which they were produced. Grimms’ “Snow White” provides useful sites in which to look into the patriarchal ideology prevalent in the 19th century Victorian period. Walt Disney’s Snow White and the Seven Dwarfs aptly depicts the American values and the Americans’ ways of thinking in America in the early 20th century. And lastly, Anne Sexton’s “Snow White,” written in a poetic form, offers the view of the feminist thinking in the postmodern period through such poetic devices as various figures of speeches and repetitions. In short, I suggest the fairytales and their retellings written in various forms and different periods as useful literary texts for cultural studies as a way to be in par with the current social demands.
