Handong University has established its reputation among other universities and Christian churches in Korea in a relatively short period of time, successfully maintaining its pure Christian identity since the beginning. The purpose of this paper is to analyze the possibility of Handong University as a genuine Christian college by fully integrating faith and learning and by battling against its secularization. To do this, three factors necessary for making a Christian college are being reviewed including the Christian vision of the university, Christian ethos embedded in various systems, and people who will realize the vision and ethos into teaching and research. In addition, there are three additional yet significant factors in the Korean situation that must be recognized and dealt with. These include maintaining a high academic excellence and competitiveness, taking into consideration the financial feasibility of a good education as well as the curriculum. Like most other Christian colleges, Handong University`s Christian vision is not yet in its fully developed, nor refined state; however, the members` commitment and passion have created a new Christian college culture in Korea and have changed the innately secular system into a more Christian one. It is important to note the substantial efforts that are being made to integrate faith and learning which is being increasingly emphasized among professors as well as students.
뮈텔 주교의 《서울 대목구 지도서》(Directorium Missionis de Seoul, 1923) 연구
한윤식(HAN, Youn-Sik) 한국교회사연구소 2011 敎會史硏究 Vol.0 No.37
In 1923, Mutel, Bishop of Vicariate Apostolic of Seoul, published Directorium Missionis de Seoul to suggest specific ministerial action plans for his priests to follow. It is an important directory for us to understand the way Bishop Mutel did his ministry in Vicariate Apostolic of Seoul and to draw a concrete picture of his various ministerial activities as bishop. It is also an important document to help understand the ministerial works of his priests and the spiritual life of the faithful there in 1920’s. Despite its importance, however, little effort has been made in studying it systematically. In order to provide some supplementary study on this directory, thus, I try to introduce the process of it being designed and published. The second step is to take a look at the emphasized points that Bishop Mutel made in promulgating it. It is followed by the study on the main points and specifics in order of contents. The study on the norms of the directory has its importance in two ways; first, it remains as a directory not only in Vicariate Apostolic of Seoul, but also it has become main norms in the entire Church in Korea since 1924. Secondly, a significant amount of its contents was included and developed in Directorium commune Missionis Coreae(Common Directory of Korean Catholic Church), which was published in 1932 and regarded as Korean Catholic ministerial directory that has had a consistent impact on the faithful since then. It is, thus, my understanding that Directorium Missionis de Seoul deserves a significant consideration and study in that it helps us understand the priestly ministry and spiritual life of the faithful in Vicariate Apostolic of Seoul in late 1920’s as well as in the entire Korean Catholic Church in twentieth century.

Introduction: The incidence of bisphosphonate-related osteonecrosis of the jaw (BRONJ) has increased gradually in patients who have undergone surgical treatment for osteomyelitis. In this study, a retrospective analysis of BRONJ patients was carried out using the data of osteomyelitis patients treated surgically. Materials and Methods: Osteomyelitis patients, who underwent curettage, sequestrectomy, saucerization or decortications, and partial mandibulectomy at Seoul National University Dental Hospital from 2004 to 2010 were enrolled in this study. The patients were classified and categorized into two groups based on the surgical records and progress notes. One group comprised of patients with osteomyelitis and osteoporosis, and the other group included patients with osteomyelitis only. The epidemiological data of the BRONJ patients was analyzed to identify any trend in the incidence of BRONJ in osteomyelitis patients. Results: Among 200 patients who underwent surgical intervention for osteomyelitis, 64 (32.0%) were identified as having osteoporosis as the underlying disease. In these 64 patients, more than 81.3% had been prescribed bisphosphonates. Females were far more affected by BRONJ than males. The incidence of BRONJ also increased with age. The posterior part of the mandible was affected more frequently by BRONJ. Conclusion: Although the availability of potent antibiotics and increased oral hygiene care can reduce the overall incidence of osteomyelitis, BRONJ can increase the total incidence. To prevent BRONJ, it is recommended that an oral examination be performed before prescribing bisphosphonates. Moreover, the patients should be educated about the potential risks of dental procedures that might be causal factors for BRONJ. Furthermore, patient swho take bisphosphonates for the treatment of osteoporosis should undergo periodic follow up oral examinations to prevent BRONJ.
