Objective: The purpose of this study is to report a metastatic adrenocortical carcinoma patient treated with wheel balanced cancer therapy (WBCT) regimen. Methods: A 52-year-old female patient diagnosed and incised with metastatic adrenocortical carcinoma visited the East West Cancer Center (EWCC) on Sep. 1st, 2018 for WBCT. The patient was treated with WBCT for an approximately 2 months, from Sep. 1st to Nov. 9th. Computed tomography (CT) was used to follow-up the tumor site. Laboratory analysis and National Cancer Institute Common Terminology Criteria for Adverse Events (NCI-CTCAE), version 5.0 were used to evaluate the safety of WBCT. Results: The surgical beds after surgery (Lt. Laparoscopic adrenalectomy) were maintained without recurrence at follow up chest CT, and related symptoms and quality of life (QOL) were improved during the WBCT. Conclusion: This case study suggests that WBCT may help to improve QOL of adrenocortical carcinoma patient.

비소세포성 폐암환자의 Crizotinib과 삼칠충초정 병용투여 경과관찰 1례

Objective: The purpose of this study is to report the case of a patient with non-small cell lung adenocarcinoma (NSCLC) with anaplastic lymphoma kinase (ALK) mutation treated by Samchilchoongcho-Jung in conjunction with Crizotinib. Methods: An NSCLC patient diagnosed with multiple pleural and lymph nodes metastasis has been taking Crizotinib (500 mg/day) since January 2014. The patient has been treated with Samchilchoongcho-Jung (1,500 mg/day) since June 2014. The tumor size was measured by computed tomography (CT) and laboratory analysis was conducted. Adverse events were evaluated by the National Cancer Institute Common Terminology Criteria for Adverse Events (NCI-CTCAE), version 5.0. Results: After combining treatment, stable disease was shown on CT. The tumor marker (CEA, Cyfra 21-1) levels were maintained. NCI-CTCAE 5.0 showed no adverse events. Conclusion: This case study suggests that Samchilchoongcho-Jung may contribute to tumor response, in conjunction with Crizotinib on the treatment of patients with NSCLC.

전이성 유방암 환자의 통합 암 치료에 대한 증례보고

Objective : The purpose of this study is to report and observe effects of Integrative Cancer Treatment (ICT) on metastatic breast cancer patient. Method : A left breast cancer patient diagnosed with recurrence on liver and bones April 2018. The patient had received paclitaxel chemotherapy for two months and discontinued it because of tumor progression and side effects. The patient has been treated with ICT since March 2018 and has been taking capecitabine since October 2018. The clinical outcomes were measured by computed tomography, laboratory findings including tumor markers (CEA, CA15-3). The clinical outcomes were measured by computed tomography, laboratory findings including tumor markers (CEA, CA15-3), liver function test (AST, ALT), Eastern Cooperative Oncology Group performance status (ECOG PS), and numeric rating scales (NRS). Results : After the ICT, tumor size was partially decreased accompanying by reducing the levels of tumor markers. Major clinical symptoms induced by paclitaxel chemotherapy were improved. There were no severe adverse events induced by ICT based on National Cancer Institute Common Terminology Criteria for Adverse Events (NCI CTCAE) version 5.0. Conclusion : This case suggests that ICT may have synergistic effect for the treatment of metastatic breast cancer patient in conjunction with capecitabine.

This essay tries to show how two Victorian women confined in the private sphere came to realize the harshness of their gender reality and got over it through writing. In fact, the way toward respectable positions in the public sphere was almost blocked to women of every class in the Victorian period. Only after mid-19th century could women earn their livings through writing. However, the allowed space was so narrow and having a job was not recommended for women from honourable status. Writing, for women, was more than an outlet emotions. It was an activity to escape from fixed role division and search for self-identity as a human being. That naturally led to the recognition of gender reality and gave a momentum to the beginning of the 19th women’s rights movement. In her essay "Enfranchisement of Women", Harriet Taylor analyzes social prejudices, which cause women to be excluded from the public life. The prejudices, like phantom, haunt the entire society more powerfully because they do not have any real fixed forms. That is why sexual discrimination still persists after democratic revolution in the 18th century. Florence Nightingale criticizes unequal values set on men's time and women's time in "Cassandra". She ascribes women's lack of systematic knowledge and abilities to 'domestic duties', which make women's time not hers but other's. As a husband's appendage, a woman has to give up herself for everyday family trivialities. Taylor and Nightingale objectified gender realities, found out key contradictions there, and explored the solutions through writing.

단양주 방법으로 제조된 막걸리의 발효과정 중 초고압 처리에 의한 미생물적 및 이화학적 특성 변화

This study was conducted to examine changes in the microbial and physicochemical properties of single-brewed Makgeolli in response to high hydrostatic pressure (HHP) treatment during various fermentation stages. HHP was applied in 2-day intervals at 400 MPa for 5 min during fermentation at 25oC. As a result, lactic acid bacteria showed 5~6 log reduction and reappeared at approximately 3~6 log cfu/mL as fermentation proceeded. Yeast also showed 5~6 log reduction but did not reappear during later fermentation period. HPP treatment did not result in any alcohol production on day 0 and 2. However, HPP treatment altered the pH and titratable acidity by reducing the number of microorganism. Reducing sugar contents of the samples increased continuously to 8.99% in 0 day treated sample and 5.01% in 2 day treated sample, whereas untreated Makgeolli contained 1.53% reducing sugars on 6 day due to alcohol conversion by yeast. Based on these results, HPP treatment during various fermentation stages altered the physicochemical properties of Makgeolli by changing the microbial community.

This essay tries to explore another Virginia Woolf as a critic of cultural and literary phenomena through a few essays in Collected Essays, The Common Reader, and The Second Common Reader. Woolf’s engagement in literary criticism is the result of her recognition that existing system of reviewers and professional critics couldn’t satisfy any components of contemporary literary market. The concept of “common reader” can be an alternative for her. The common reader is not only limited to real reading public. It also becomes her critical principle and method as an ‘ideal’ reader, who judges literary value in the last instance. Critical activity sets out from revealing the prejudices and flaws of a text, not from inquiring the right answer of authentic professionals. The moment the common readers start to express their own words, literature comes to a “common ground” without boundary. Woolf draws a democratic cultural scene from that place.

Objective: The purpose of this study is to report improvement of symptoms after lobectomy of male breast cancer lung metastasis treated with Korean Medicine based Integrative Cancer Treatment (ICT). Methods: A male left breast cancer patient diagnosed with metastasis on lung at July 2019. After Video assisted thoracic surgery (VATS) left lower lobe (LLL) lobectomy and En bloc wedge resection the patient visited the Daejeon korean medicine hospital of Daejeon university East West Cancer Center (EWCC) to treat operation-site (op-site) pain, dysphagia, anorexia with Korean Medicine Treatment. The patient was treated with Korean Medicine based ICT for an approximately 20 days. The clinical outcomes were measured by National Cancer Institute Common Terminology Criteria for Adverse Event (NCI-CTCAE), Numeral rating scale (NRS) and Eastern Cooperative Oncology Group (ECOG). The safety of treatment was verified by blood tests. Results: After treatment, op-site pain was improved from NRS 9 to 6, dysphagia and anorexia were relieved from NRS 9 to 2. And ECOG score of the patient was improved from grade 2 to 1. Conclusion: This case study suggests that Korean Medicine based ICT may help to improve post operative sequelae in metastatic lung cancer patient.

Paclitaxel/Carboplain과 한의 치료를 병행한 원발성 복막암종 환자의 삶의 질 개선에 대한 증례보고

Objective: The purpose of this study is to report the therapeutic possibility of a primary peritoneal carcinoma (PPC) patient with Traditional Korean Medicine (TKM). Methods: A 37 years old female patient diagnosed with PPC suffered from operation site pain, neck pain, nausea, headache and fatigue after undergoing operation and chemotherapy (Paclitaxel/Carboplain). The patient was treated with acupuncture, pharmacoacupuncture, moxibution and herbal medicine. Laboratory study and National Cancer Institute Common Terminology Criteria for Adverse Events (NCI-CTCAE), version 5.0 were used to evaluate the safety and adverse events of treatments. The performance status was measured by Eastern Cooperative Oncology Group (ECOG) scale. Results: After treatments, cancer did not show any progression. Related symptoms such as postoperative pain, nausea, fatigue and quality of life have improved. Conclusion: This case study implies that TKM may have therapeutic possibility in treating PPC patient.

식품으로부터 쉬겔라 검출을 위한 분리배지 비교

본 연구는 식품으로부터 Shigella spp.를 검출하기 위해서 현재 사용되고 있는 분리배지를 대상으로 분리 성능을 비교하였다. MAC, SSA, DCA, XLD, HEA와 CHROMagar 총 6개의 분리배지를 대상으로 비교하였다. 일반 Shigella spp.에 대한 성장은 MAC에서 TSA와 비슷한 수준 균수를 보였고 DCA에서 낮은 균수로 측정되었다. 소고기, 돼지고기, 새우를 대상으로 한 회수실험은 S. sonnei가 CHROMagar에서 성장이 유의적으로 높았으며(p<0.05) 양상추와 양배추에서는 S. sonnei가 SSA에서의 성장이 유의적으로 높게 나타났다(p<0.05). 식품 상재균은 소고기, 새우, 양배추에서 전체적으로 낮은 수준으로 측정되었으나 각 배지에서 유의적 차이는 없었다(p>0.05). 열 스트레스를 받은 S. sonnei는 MAC, SSA에서만 성장하였다. Enterobacteriaceae를 대상으로 한 선택성 측정 결과 HEA가 가장 높은 선택성을 나타내었다. Morganella spp.는 각 분리배지에서 Shigella spp.와 구분되지 못하였다. 실험에 사용된 배지는 각각의 조건에 따라 분리되는 특성이 상이하므로 식품에서 분리배지를 이용하여 Shigella spp.를 분리하고자 할 경우 분리 균의 상태에 따라 분리배지를 선택하여 사용하는 것이 바람직할 것으로 생각되었다. The objective of this study was to compare the performances of conventional microbiological media used in isolation of Shigella spp. from foods. Total of six selective media, including MacConkey agar (MAC), Salmonella Shigella agar (SSA), desoxycholate citrate agar (DCA), xylose lysine desoxycholate agar (XLD), hektoen enteric agar (HEA), and CHROMagar, were tested. MAC showed almost the same colony numbers as compared to tryptic soy agar (TSA) while DCA showed significantly lower colony numbers when cultivated Shigella spp. was counted in each medium. In a food recovery test with beef, pork and shrimp, S. sonnei recovered well on CHROMagar (p<0.05). With lettuce and cabbage, S. sonnei displayed significantly significant recovery (p<0.05) on SSA in comparison with other selective media. Heat-injured cells recovered well on MAC and SSA. In a specificity test using Enterobacteriaceae strains, HEA was identified as having the highest specificity among the tested media. However, Morganella spp. could not be differentiated from Shigella spp. on any of the tested selective media. Shigella spp. precluded the possibility of isolation from foods by a single ‘best’ selective medium. Consequently, a combination of complementary selective media or selection of appropriate media according to cell conditions must be considered for comprehensive isolation.
