The purpose of this research may be summarized as follow. 1. Through collective research and analysis of Korean Buddist tales. I seek to understand characters and meanings of Buddist tales. The tales have been created historically in long time since 372 A.D when Buddism was introduced into Korea from China. 2. About temple tales : ⓐ In Jundeungsa temple(傳燈寺) located in Kangwhado, we can find a naked woman carved in wood who was a prostitute working in wineshop near to the temple. At the time that temple construction work, a head carpenter was falled in her false love affair, of course, it was sin. So, the tale have asked us morality and holiness in daily living as Buddist until now. ⓑ Many kings visited the famous temple for their health and repend for their sins and cruelty for holding reign of government under the grace of Budda in temple. They believed. “Repentance wipes out sin.” ⓒ The first king of Koryo dynasty. Wangun(王建) built a king's honorable temple named Kaetaesa(開奉寺), and Yisungge(李成桂) of Josun dynasty builded his temple named Sukwangsa (釋王寺) in order to containe his nation peacefully by Budda help and comfort peaple whom he fought in past. 3. About the great Buddist monk tales. ⓐ The monk Wonhyo (元曉大師) married into princess Yosok(瑤石公主) who was widow for that he had borne child, genius Sulchong(薛聰) and spread Buddism to low class peaple from royal class. He sacrificed himself to preserve his Buddist belief with integirity. ⓑ The monk Uisang(義湘大師), contrastlly the monk Wonhyo, never recieved the proposal of beautiful girl Sunmyo(善妙) to his clean and passinate Buddist belief. After that his denying, Sunmyo transformed a dragon and helped the monk Uisung's Buddist works. ⓒ The monk Jinmuk(震默大師) was a miracle of a Buddist monk showing many wonderful doings in his life as wine drinking monk, holder of the sun setting on for his sister arrived her house safely. The period he lived was so called darkage, so he became a light to peaple in need and in shortage of spritual situation. ⓓ The monk Samyungdong(泗溟大師) also was a monk soldier commander against Japanese army : As courageous the commander he fought bravely and at last repelled Japanese army aggresin, in Imjinwaeran(壬辰倭亂) by means of that, he kept nation, as showing great mercy to weak people. The monks kept the social justise, and tried to build Buddist utopia on the earth. 4. About Buddist doctrines. The buddist tales said. ⓐ Destinies arrange in a previous existence. ⓑ The results of good deeds between this world life and former world life. ⓒ Life is but an empty dream. ⓓ They, people, have had grand dreams but they have been only dreams. ⓔ The transmigration of one can changes his social class from the now world life to the next world life. In conclusion, the object of this reseach is that Buddist tales are very valuable tradition through Korean history, and they know how to face the new social situation for Buddism spread based on the Buddism doctrines and priciples.
