This paper describes inference architecture of an intelligent CAD system that is to be used for design tasks in which complex and large amount of knowledge is used. In order to investigate the issue of handling huge and complex knowledge, design knowledge is categorized into four types and inference methods for them are identified respectively: original design problems are decomposed into several modules of design processes and finally into sub-problems with the four types of knowledge as basic elements in a top-down manner. We demonstrate the implementation of the architecture with the result of the machining center - a sort of machine tools - design.

An intelligent software system which can support efficiently and systematically machine tool design by utilizing design knowledge is described in this paper. The process of embodiment design of a machining center was modelled, represented by IDEFO, and embedded in the system. A hybrid type inference engine has been introduced so that the system can effectively deal with knowledge represented in diversified forms. The design system was developed on the basis of object-oriented programming, and has been coded into one software system which can be ported on Windows NT.

Propolis and honey are beekeeping products and are widely used as health supplements for humans. Previous studies have shown that propolis and honey have various physiological properties, including antioxidant, anti-inflammatory, and antibacterial effects. In order to investigate the physiological response induced by propolis and honey, including developmental time (larval and pupal periods), reproductivity, and adult lifespan (both male and female), we treated Drosophila melanogaster, a representative model organism, with these beekeeping products. We observed alterations in developmental time, adult longevity, and reproductivity in D. melanogaster treated with either propolis or honey. Interestingly, when honey or propolis induces an increase in oviposition, the survival rate of female adults tended to decrease. However, when female D. melanogaster were fed with propolis the oviposition rate remained constant and, the extended longevity was observed. In this study, we provided insight into the physiological activity of honey and propolis through the Drosophila model, and future follow-up studies are expected to elucidate their molecular physiological mechanisms.
