Purpose: During more than 70 years of division, exchange between the two Koreas was rare and academic heterogeneity deepened. This study aims to analyze changes and characteristics of environmental architecture research in North Korea through an architectural journal published in North Korea. Method: In this study, about 2,000 papers published from 1990 to 2018 in <Chosun Architecture>, a representative architecture journal in North Korea, were analyzed to analyze trends in eco-friendly architecture research by period and subject. The terminology, article description style and change of research subject in environmental architecture were reviewed and characteristics were summarized. Result: First of all, research themes on residential buildings focused on thermal environments and studies on acoustics and light environments mostly focused on public buildings. In particular, as for the thermal environment, many studies were related to thermal insulation and natural solar energy storage. Second, the research method was described in the form of an essay, and the results were obtained by formulas and calculations rather than experiments or simulations. Third, in relation to the floor plan of the residential building, there have been designs that reduced heat loss through insulation rather than the quality of life. Fourth, although the latest architectural trends such as ecological architecture and zero energy were introduced, it was found that their implementation were insufficient compared to South Korea or other countries.

The purpose of this study is to investigate the parents’ perceptions on elementary school English education and draw some implications for the policies of elementary school English education. A total of 1,666 parents of elementary school students participated in the study. According to the parents, the most problematic issues in the elementary English classrooms are the ability gap among students and the excessive number of students per teacher. In addition, parents did not have positive perceptions with regard to the improvement of their children’s English ability through school education. With this regards, the parents demanded the increment of the number of English classes per week, and more native speaker teachers in classrooms. However, these perceptions of parents on elementary English education differ across regions and types of school, and therefore, cautions are required to interpret them. This study suggests some policies for elementary English education such as increment of differentiated curriculum, two teachers per one English classroom and supporting schools in small towns with more resources and facilities for English education.
