Vol.- No.23
The aim of this article is to introduce Levinas’ theses on the Jewish Problem and to draw their post-colonial implications. For Levinas, the Jewish Problem is not only the problem of seeking for the right to survive in the situation regardless of exclusion and discrimination. It is also the problem of looking for the condition that Jewish people can maintain their culture and religion and develop their sensibility. Levinas’ assertion that we should acknowledge others on the basis of their absoluteness is the philosophical attempt to solve these problems. Such a claim, however, allowed him to block the possibility to distinguish between neighbor and enemy. To read Levinas’ ethics in the post-colonial context, we should set the criterion to distinguish an enemy among others and then decide to help whom first. I presented the new interpretation of the relation between self and other. Unlike Levinas, it was focused on their equal status instead of their asymmetrical relation. Futhermore, I showed Levinas’ thesis that responsibility precedes freedom could be extended to political responsibility through Arendt’s concept of collective responsibility. I expect this discussion would be the beginning of more balanced and intensified study of Levinas’ ethics and political philosophy.
