Vol.5 No.1

The purpose of study was to know the effect of addition of fluoride to prophylaxis paste on caries prevention. 2% sodium fluoride solution and 8% stannous fluoride solution were applied topically to enamel blocks made from human teeth. Also, 2% sodium fluoride-containing pumice and 8 % stannous fluoride-containing pumice was applied to enamel blocks using rubber cup for ten seconds. Enamel surface hardness was measured before and after demineralization by 0.01 N lactic acid. The results were as follows; 1. Enamel solubility was increased in NaF group and nearly unchanged in SnF_2 group by prophylaxis with plain pumice after fluoride application. 2. Enamel solubility was increased in NaF group and decreased in SnF_2 group by prophylaxis with fluoride-containing pumice after fluoride application. 3. Enamel solubility was lower in case of prophylaxis with fluoride-containing pumice after fluoride application and after no fluoride application than in case of prophya xis with plain pumice after fluoride application. 4. Enamel solubility was lower in case of no prophylaxis after fluoride application than in case of prophylaxis with fluoride-containing pumice in NaF group, and vice versa in SnF_2 group.

Vol.19 No.1

A most important and meaningful reversal happens between the parents and the children as in the instances of Lear and Gloucester to their seemingly filial Goneril and Regan and Edmund to their rejected, yet always true Edgar and Cordelia. This paper is to deal with the porcess and meaning of the reversal with special emphasis on the nature and role of Edgar and Cordelia. The consideration of the reversal in the parent-child relationship should be centered on the image of Lear and Gloucester as a child and the image of Edgar and Cordelia as a parent figure or a mentor. By means of the discussion we might be able to have a sound and full perspective of the suffering and the tragic existence of Lear and Gloucester as well as the true nature and role of Edgar and Cordelia, which form the fundamentals of King Lear as a tragedy of humanity and sacrifice. The main role of Edgar is that of a teacher helping Lear and Gloucester attain patience, charity and true understanding of the realities and their existence and that of a protector saving his father. Another true parent figure who is equally consequential as Edgar is Cordelia. Though the theme of a child as a mentor or a father is to some extent obscured in Cordelia's case by her simultaneous role of reverent daughter, she truly performs both roles of a father and a child, which are complimentary and inseparable. In the examination of the interrelationship between the parents and the children, we come to the conclusion that throughout and, especially, in the end of the play we strongly feel, see, recognize the essential, intrinsic values symbolized and incarnated by Edgar and Cordelia through their noble and superlative devotion and sacrifice to their parents.

Vol.11 No.-

This paper probes into the structure and aspect of confrontation between Hamlet and Claudius. Part one probes how Hamlet is made to seek certitude about the Ghost in relation to Ghost's testimony against Claudius. Part two analyzes first Hamlet's antic disposition and also his awareness of Claudius' crime by means of the players' performance. It also discusses how Hamlet's search develops into the broader inquiry about death and about his choice of conduct. Part three examines the final stage of his quest for certitude, where he comes to a definite attitude toward death and human destiny and where his inquiry into certitude through the gathering of evidence gives place to his putting faith in readiness. This is exemplified in his acceptance of the fencing bout and in his execution of the King.

Vol.19 No.1

There are no studies which give a full and comprehensive account of the translations and productions of the major works of the 19th and 20th English Drama in Korea. This paper, therefore, is to provide a full record of it and also to make some suggestions to promote the reception and spread of the modern and contemporary English drama anong the Korean theatre. To file the translation record, I have examined the library cards of the major national and college libraries and I have verified each entry with the aid of Books in Print published by sereral major publishers. For the production issue I have examined news papers of the period, and an abundance of ephemera including playbills and theater programs, in addition to examining existing printed records. One major source of information has been The Annals of Literature and Art. In this way the research accompanied by the suggestions hopes to provide the important beginnings of a study of the interprotation and reception of the 19th and 20th English drama in Korea and also to give an appropriate and broader guidance and perspective of the drama to the general theater-goer as well as to the professional theater in Korea.

      • Othello

Vol.14 No.-

This paper tries to discuss the acts of judgement of Othello. These are the findings of the study. One of them is the decision by the Duke on Brabantio's complaint against Othello. The Duke quite unfairly dismisses it on the basis of Desdemona's testimony and of the urgency of the state. Next one is Othello's judgement of Cassio for his commotion. Othello rushes to his decision to dismiss Cassio, without a full and correct inquiry of the situation. At the near end of the play, Othello, identifying himself as a just judge and executioner, judges and damns Desdemona for her faithfulness and kills her. Finally, Othello damns and executes himself after acknowledging belatedly the chastity and innocence of Desdemona as well as his dreadful folly.
