Vol.32 No.2

William Shakespeare was tied up with the daily life of Eugene O’Neill’s family and with O’Neill’s growth and education. It was a psychologically necessary for Shakespeare to have written Hamlet just as O’Neill had to write Long Day’s Journey into Night and A Moon for the Misbegotten. Hamlet seems to have exerted considerable pressure on O’Neill’s creative imagination when he was writing his last two plays, Long Day’s Journey into Night and A Moon for the Misbegotten. That the past controls the present is the strongest thematic link between O’Neill’s last two plays and Hamlet. The return of the ghosts of the past, the shattering of illusions, the disappointment with what life has become, the sense of what could have been―these are common to the three plays. Shakespeare’s Hamlet allowed O’Neill to become better acquainted with his own night and with the night of the dramatic world he created. Long Day’s Journey into Night and A Moon for the Misbegotten, dealing with the ghosts of the past, was written in the shadow of Hamlet, itself dealing with the ghosts of the past. Recently, the development project is conducting disaster effect estimation to breed disaster, and cope these disaster beforehand provoking soil erosion and flood. Therefore, it is important to analyze and reduce of these disaster. In this study, it is intended to extract LS and C factors of soil erosion through the digital image. The photogrammetric technique, which employs the Remote Control Helicopter equipped with a non-metric digital camera, was used for the efficient survey and analysis of cutting slopes. As a result, we obtain more objective value of soil erosion factor using digital image.

Vol.29 No.1

The Greek tragedy, especially the concept of Fate in the Greek sense, had a tremendous influence on Eugene O'Neill. For him, Greek tragedy meant the unsurpassed example of art. To recreate the Greek spirit in modern life was the goal he set for himself both as a playwright and as a man. The mystical, Dionysian experience of being, which O'Neill found in the plays of Aeschylus and Sophocles, he hoped to impart, through his plays, to a modern audience. What has influenced his plays the most was his knowledge of the drama of all time―particularly Greek tragedy. Mourning Becomes Electra is a modern psychological drama using one of the old legend plots of Greek tragedy, Oresteia for its basic theme. Greek tragic heroes are constantly impelled or guided by Fate. They are not free. Neither are the characters of Mourning Becomes Electra. They obey an internal Fate which is ineluctable. O'Neill meant it so. Doris M. Alexander has called “psychological fate.” He has thus purposely transposed the Greek notion of Fate and substituted for it the modern notions of heredity and psychological determinism. His characters are thus caught in a web of inherited complexes and neuroses from which they cannot escape, and he has suggested the fated recurrence of their attitudes. They are endowed with a keen sense of sin and the whole trilogy is underlain by a deep conviction of the sinful and corrupt nature of man. The conflict between man and Fate is no longer the mere clash of opposite wills on the plane of action. It takes the form of an inner struggle between good and evil forces. The fall of the tragic hero is no longer caused by a mere flaw in his character, but by the irrepressible surge of evil instincts which eventually destroy him. In Mourning Becomes Electra all the characters, except the non-tragic ones who are not passionate enough to kill themselves or the others, are sooner or later crushed to death by an implacable Fate which does not tolerate their dreams of earthly happiness―a spectacle which very forcibly conveys the powerlessness and weakness of Man. Yet, we do not feel depressed by this tragic series of calamities, for the heroes are truly heroic. They fight valiantly. They never debase themselves or behave cowardly―even when they commit suicide. When Christine kills herself, it does not mean that she gives up the fight, but rather that she refuses to yield to Fate. It is her way of saying no to Fate. And the same is true of Orin. He deliberately chooses death when he could live happily. As for Lavinia she remains unbending to the end. Fate does not succeed in crushing her. Though defeated, she preserves all her human dignity. Mourning does indeed become Electra. Mourning Becomes Electra is a modern psychological approximation of the Greek sense of Fate. O'Neill shows that the characters of this tragedy can find the meaning of life, and achieve self-recognition through the antagonism and death with Fate. He, ultimately, shows the human aspects of the unbent, glorious, self-destructive struggles, and the paradoxical meaning of tragedy by the internal, spiritual triumph behind the external bodily failure. His tragic view expressed in his tragedies is that life is derived from death, hope from despair, joy from sadness, sanity from madness, triumph from failure, and brightness from darkness. < Wonkwang National University >

Vol.58 No.1

The origin of ‘revenge,’ not found in modern drama, was derived from Stoicism of Lucius Seneca, Roman dramatist. And, also, he was influenced by Greek tragedy, which has the law of cause and effect for atonement by Nemesis. The revenge plays of Seneca in which revenge begets revenge and blood calls blood exerted, as a model, a great influence on the medieval and Elizabethan dramatists of England. The aim of this thesis is to study the aspect of revenge in Hamlet by William Shakespeare and The Spanish Tragedy by Thomas Kyd, which opened a way of the revenge plays of Shakespeare, and compare the similarities and differences in two tragedies, and find the similarities and differences between the two tragedies and Senecan tragedies, and afford a better understanding about revenge plays.

Vol.53 No.4

There are big gaps between William Shakespeare`s Macbeth and Eugene O`Neill`s The Emperor Jones in the time, the space, the style, and the dramatic form. One is a tragedy of character, the other is an expressionistic play. However, these two works have some common elements in their theme and the technique. The purpose of this essay is to analyze the various aspects of "fears" appeared in both works. In Macbeth, the apparitions can be interpreted as the visions from the hero`s fear. More meaningful thing is that these apparitions speak to the hero. But those of the latter mean the rerun, the collective unconscious and the regression of Jones`s or the negro`s past and they don`t speak, and Little Formless Fears mean those which are common for all of us. Both the insistent and loud sound of knocking of the former and the far-off, insistent, quick and loud beat of tom-tom of the latter become a great dramatic device to increase the inner fears of the audience as well as of Macbeth and Jones and to realize artistically the union of physical and psychological. The world of darkness of the former such as the thunder, the lightening, the vision of bloody dagger and Macbeth`s hands bathed in Duncan`s blood and that of the latter such as the Great Forest and the moon light promote the effect of fear. Macbeth and Jones are the victims of tragic irony and achieve their salvation through death. (Wonkwang University)

Vol.34 No.1

Eugene O'Neill and George Bernard Shaw had a great concern about ‘women.’ Through their plays they created the essence of various types of women having the inscrutable forces, the triumph of life over death, and the significant values. The interrelated plays of O'Neill and Shaw were selected to study the roles of such women overcoming the disruption and achieving the harmony through the soul's introspection and the spiritual salvation, as Abbie in Desire Under the Elms, and Barbara in Major Barbara. The world of disruption was associated with the confrontation of conflict and struggle of beings. The would of harmony, on the other hand, was associated with the unification of beings and the perfection of self. O'Neill and Shaw, through the women in their plays, show an acute insight and an intuition, and suggest various views of art and life. So, for them, women are not only main factors that puts emphasis on the artistic truth and the lesson of life but an object of reflection and wisdom which enables us to create a live feeling and a thought of reality and illusion and carry out both an illustrative purpose of life and an aesthetic purpose of art.
