The style of Henderson the Rain King is worthy of a remarkable attention. Saul Bellow always wanted his protagonists to fall into the deep soul called the crater of the spirit and overcome the fear of death so that his heroes could undergo the transcendental truth. Therefore, the intention of this paper is to research into the process whereby Eugene Henderson, the protagonist of this novel, transcends the reality and the fear of death. In Henderson the Rain King, Eugene Henderson experiences various adventures to encounter the dread of death in Africa. His travel is filled with adversity and ordeal. He arrives at the village of Wariri, where he meets King Dahfu. Thanks to the king`s help, he learns how to conquer his horror of death. Henderson regards King Dahfu`s death as his own death and thus surmounts the horror of death. Eventually, through finishing his pilgrimage of death and rebirth, he comes to realize the transcendental truth.

조용배 조선대학교 외국문화연구소 1997 外國文化硏究 Vol.20 No.1
The object of this paper is to make a study of Tommy Wilhelm's quest for identity. In fact, the novel of Seize the Day portrays a single day in the life of Tommy Wilhelm when he is on the point of going bankrupt. Tommy's life is unique in this sense that he had never overcome. All his decision has ended in a sort of fiasco. On the whole, his life consists of series of blunders - blunders which could have been avoided. When Tamkin finally disappears, Tommy Wilhelm enters a funeral ceremony, being pushed by the crowd. Inside the funeral ceremony, the sight of the meditative look on the face of the dead man arrests his movement and he is filled with awe and admiration. Then he bursts out the deluge of tears and he weeps bitterly, thinking about the wretched mess which is his life. Through this identification with the corpse he is wailing intensely. Water as a symbolic means of purification seems to wash as a symbolic means of purification seems to wash the guilt and suffering. Thus the protagonist has a symbolic death, resulting in his metaphysical rebirth.

Recently, it is getting more and more important ensuring the integrity for the equipment degradation according to the increase of nuclear power plant operating period. In many equipment of the nuclear power plant, snubbers mainly installed in reactor coolant pumps, steam generators and piping protected the equipment and piping from the occurrence of transient dynamic loads such as the earthquake, thermal load during the plant operation. This report describes the function, regulation, inspection requirements and management status of the snubbers installed in domestic nuclear power plants.

This study aimed to enhance the gross motor function, gait, balance, and quality of life of school-aged children using task-oriented approach based on the school function assessment (SFA). Total of three school-aged children who were diagnosed with genetic developmental disabilities (GDD) participated in the experiment. In a pre-test, the gross motor function measure (GMFM), pediatric evaluation of disability inventory (PEDI), pediatric balance scale (PBS), and GaitRite was evaluated. Then, 12 weeks of task-oriented approach based on SFA was performed. The treatment consisted of ‘traveling’, ‘maintaining and changing positions’, ‘manipulation with movement’, ‘using materials’, ‘recreational movement’, ‘hygiene’, ‘clothing management’, ‘up/down stairs’. After the treatment, a post-test followed. Gait analysis revealed increased symmetry in both time and distance of a single step. Furthermore, GMFM and PBS measures increased for every participant. Finally, daily life dependence in PEDI decreased for every participant. We demonstrated effect of task-oriented approach in three children with GDD. The proposed treatment effectively enhanced overall GMFM, ratio between swing and stance phases, and PBS. Especially, the ratio between swing and stance phases shifted close to 4:6, which is the presumed normal ratio. Also, daily life dependence in PEDI decreased for every participant, which indicates that it has a significant effect on physical function and participation. Increasing number of participants and applying the suggested protocol to patients with GDD could be future topics.
