Ulmus parvifolia has been used as a traditional folk medicine to treat the carbuncle in deep skin. In this study, the effect of water extract of root bark of Ulmus parvifolia (WUP) on the carbuncle, pain, inflammation and hypersensitivity was evaluated in animal models. The administration of WUP significantly decreased the size of Staphylococcus aureus ($10^8$ cells/mouse)-induced carbuncle, and also exhibited analgesic activity in the HAc-induced writhing syndrome at doses of 50-500 mg/kg. It also showed significant anti-inflammatory activity in the carageenin- and complete Freund's adjuvant-induced inflammation. In the histamine-induced anaphylaxis, it decreased the percent of mortality by protecting mice treated with Bordetella pertussis. In the immune responses in the mice sensitized and challenged with sheep red blood cells, the Arthus reaction determined by swelling of foot pad at 4 h after challenge, HA titer, HY titer and PFC which can be used to evaluate the humoral immune response were significantly suppressed by oral administration of WUP at doses of 100 and 200mg/kg. The cellular immune responses in the same mice such as delayed type hypersensitivity determined by swelling of foot pad at 24 h after challenge and RFC were also significantly suppressed in the same manner.

Cnidii rhizoma is one of the most important crude drugs used particularly for the treatment of female genital inflammatory diseases in traditional oriental medicine. In this study, its anti-inflammatory and analgesic activities were examined employing animal models. It was found that $H_2O$ extract and n-BuOH fraction inhibited significantly the edema formation after the subplantar injection of carrageenin at oral doses of 100 and 200 mg/kg in a dose-dependent fashion, where MeOH extract showed significant anti-inflammatory activity at a oral dose of 200 mg/kg. In Freund's complete adjuvant-induced arthritis, H2O extract and n-BuOH fraction exerted their significant inhibitory activity on the edema formation at oral doses of 100 and 200 mg/kg. The $H_2O$ extract and n-BuOH fraction also showed significant analgesic activity in a dose-dependent manner in acetic acid-induced writhing test.

The water extracts of ten crude drugs were tested for the spasmolytic and anti-peptic ulcer activities on rat ileum smooth muscle contraction and aspirin-induced acute hemorrhagic erosive gastritis respectively. The water extract of Aurantii immaturi pericarpium(AIP)(IC50=1.5 X 1O-2g/l), Aurantii nobilis pericarpium(ANP)(IC50=2.5 X 1O-2g/l), Cyperi rhizoma(CR)(IC50=3.3 X 1O-2g/l). Linderae radix(LR) (IC50=6.8 X 1O-2g/l), Aurantii fructus immaturus(AFI)(IC50=23.3 X 1O-2g/l), Saussureae radix(SR)(IC50=13.2 X 1O-2g/l) and Ponciri fructus(PF)(IC50=23.3 X 1O-2g/l) showed inhibitory activity on the isometric contraction of rat ileum smooth muscle induced by electrical stimulation in a concentration-dependent manner, whereas the water extracts of Arecae pericarpium(AP), Agastachis herba(AH) and Magnoliae cortex(MC) potentiated the isometric contraction. In the aspirin-induced acute gastritis, the water extracts of MC, AP and CR reduced significantly the gastric juice secretion, gastric juice acidity and pepsin activity. They also showed protective activity of gastric mucosal layer from erosion and petichial hemorrhage in gross and histological examination.

Hepatoprotective activities of 26 traditional Korean herbal prescriptions described in Donghibogam were evaluated in vivo and in vitro screening system. Twenty one prescriptions appeared to be active. Six prescriptions among them showed highly significant hepatoprotective activities; Shihogyegy-Tang(柴胡桂枝湯), Soshiho-Tang(小柴胡湯), Shiho plus Younggolmoryo-Tang(柴胡加龍骨牡蠣湯), Yinjinho-Tang(茵蔯蒿湯), Yinsam-Tang(人蔘湯) and Shashim-Tang(瀉心湯). Shihogyegy-Tang was most active. They reduced the release of transaminases from dissociated hepatocytes by thioacetamide, and serum transaminases and alkaline phosphatase activities of rat with carbontetrachloride-induced hepatitis. They inhibited significantly lipid peroxidation and cellular fatty change of liver by carbontetrachloride.

Effect of Mylabris sidae(MS) and Epicauta gorhami(EG) polysaccharide fractions on the inflammation and immune responses were studied in vivo. MS and EG contained cantharidin about 0.61 and 0.65%, respectively. It was shown that MS and EG polysaccharide fractions at a oral dose of 100 mg/kg have the significant anti-inflammatory and analgesic activity; They inhibited significantly the carrageenin-induced inflammation and acetic acid-induced writhing syndrome. They accelerated significantly the carbon clearance and the phagocytosis of colloidal carbons by Kupffer cells in liver, but they at a oral dose of 100 mg/kg suppressed significantly the Arthus reaction in the sheep red blood cell(S-RBC)-sensitized mice in accordance with the inhibition of haemaglutinin titer, haemolysin titer and plaque-forming cells. On the other hand, they at a oral dose of 200 mg/kg accelerated slightly the oxazolone-induced dermatitis in rats and delayed hypersensitivity in the S-RBC-challenzed mice in consistent with the increase of rosette forming cells. As the above results, it exhibited that MS and EG polysaccharide fractions inhibited the humoral immune responses, but they accelerated the function of macrophages and cellular immune responses. EG polysaccharide fraction had more active than MS polysaccharide fraction.

Effects of Allolobophora caliginosatrapezoides (Ac) polysaccharide fractions on the inflammation and hypersensitivity were studied in vivo. It showed that Ac polysaccharide fractions have the significant inhibitory activities of inflammation and hypersensitivity; They inhibited significantly the carrageenin-induced paw edema and acetic acid-induced writhing syndrome. They also inhibited significantly the Arthus reaction and delayed hypersensitivity in the sheep red blood cell-sensitized mice in accordance with the inhibition of haemaglutinin titer, haemolysin titer, plaque-forming cells and rosette-forming cells. They also improved markedly the oxazolone-induced dermatitis in rats dose-dependently. As the above results, it exhibited that Ac polysaccharide fraction inhibited not only humoral immune response, but also cell-mediated immune response. It seemed that methanol and ether extracts have also another physiological active agents.

The relationships of inhibitory activities of inflammation and wound healing of flavonoids were studied in vitro and in vivo. Generally flavonoids have not only significantly anti-inflammatory activity in carrageenin-induced paw edema and Freund''s complete adjuvant-induced arthritis, but also inhibitory activity of wound healing. The more inhibitory activities Of wound healing flavonoids have. the more they have the anti-inflammatory activities; apigenin > guercetin > flovone > rutin > hesperidin > naringin. Their inhibitory mechanism seems to be inhibition of the inflammatory cell infiltration and fibroblast proliferation, and so they decreased the granulomatous activity and tensile strength.
