Herpes Zoster Oticus is a reactivation of latent varicella-zoster infection associated otalgia, facial nerve palsy, sensorineural hearing loss and vertigo. Facial nerve palsy is rapid in onset, usually severe degree, and poor is prognosis. And pain in the form of acute neuritis and postherpetic neuralgia is by far the most frequent and most debilitating complication of Herpes Zoster. The pain of Herpes Zoster may severe, but it is usually transitory. Some patients, with the elderly at particular risk, go on to develop postherpetic neuralgia. In the two cases, pain (especially postherpetic neuralgia) which is often severe and, unfortunately, refractory to most forms of treatment was reduced using herbal medicine and acupuncture but facial nerve palsy was not improved.

Objectives:This study aimed to investigate personality profile differences among methamphetamine abusers admitted to Bugok National Hospital according to the presence or absence of psychotic features. Participants & Methods:Participants were 37 hospitalized male patients who met the DSM-IV criteria for methamphetamine abuse or dependence. We evaluated their psychotic symptoms using the Brief Psychiatric Rating Scale (BPRS). To measure personality traits, we used the Temperament and Character Inventory (TCI) and the NEO Five Factor Inventory (NEO-FFI). We used the independent t-test to analyze differences in inventory profiles between participants with the sole diagnosis of Methamphetamine Dependence with, or without, psychotic symptoms. Results:Compared with their non-psychotic counterparts, methamphetamine users with psychotic features showed significantly higher Novelty-Seeking and, Harm Avoidance and lower Extraversion. Conclusion:This study suggests that differences in methamphetamine abusers’ personality profiles might suggest possible vulnerability to methamphetamine-induced psychotic features. Further trials, larger and well-designed, could more accurately define differences in personality profiles between methamphetamine users with psychotic features and without psycho-tic features.

Objectives : The purpose of this study was to investigate the characteristics of Heart Rate Variability (HRV) in patients with methamphetamine (METH) dependence in comparison with the control group. We also aimed to evaluate correlations between METH dependence period, total amount of administered METH, duration of METH administration, duration of the most recent abstinence period, total amount of administered METH during the past year, duration of METH administration during the past year, and HRV indices in patients with metham-phetamine dependence. Methods : We examined HRV of 20 METH dependent patients, who were already detoxified and 20 comparisons. We also performed a comparative analysis of the results amongst the test and control subjects by using ANCOVA. We also investigated the correlation between variables related to addiction and HRV indices in patients with METH dependence by using partial correlation analysis. Results : A majority of HRV indices were lower in the METH dependence group than in the control group. METH depen-dence period exhibited significant correlation with some HRV indices. Abstinence period and the administered amount of METH during the past year possessed significant correlations with some HRV indices, as well. The total amount of adminis-tered METH and duration of METH administration had a cor-relation with Mean Heart Rate (MHR), but the duration of ME-TH administration during the past year showed no significant correlation with the HRV index. Conclusion : Our results suggest that METH adversely affected the cardiac autonomic nervous system. The impairment of autonomic nervous system was directly proportional to the amount of administered METH during past year. And the extent of normalization of autonomic nervous system was dependant on the most recent abstinence period. In other words, longer period of the most recent abstinence period led to higher rate of normalization of autonomic nervous system.
