A tritium plant, in a nuclear fusion facility, is comprised of the Tokamak Exhaust Processing (TEP) system, the Isotope Separation Systems (ISS), the Analytical System (ANS) and the Storage and Delivery System (SDS).The main function of the SDS is to store and supply hydrogen isotopes needed for Tokamak operation. The SDS bed is used for storing hydrogen isotopes as a metal hydride form. The focus is on the heating-up of the tray-type experimental SDS bed. The bed shows rapid heating-up characteristics, which is desirable for a rapid delivery of hydrogen isotopes by desorption from the metal hydride.

A tray type Zirconium-Cobalt (ZrCo) tritium storage bed with an“in-bed”gas flowing calorimetry function has been developed for a self-assaying system in a tritium storage and delivery system of nuclear fusion facilities. The ZrCo bed is installed in a primary vessel. And 6 kW cable heaters are brazed in the bottom of each tray. He loop tubes are brazed on the top side of each plate, and 32 W simulation heaters are also installed along the He loop. To evaluate characteristics of the He circulation loop for tritium inventory measurement, the He loop gas temperature increase (△T) was measured by using the simulation heaters.

A metal hydride bed for the storage and delivery of hydrogen isotopes is one of the essential components of the tokamak fuel cycle. For the development of a metal hydride bed, rapid delivery/recovery rates according to the tokamak operation scenario and accurate and rapid measurement of tritium inventory are major concerns. To achieve these requirements, it is important to design an operation scenario for rapid cooling performance. Therefore we should know the highest temperature of the bed without significant decrease of hydriding performance to minimize cooling time. In this study, we present the hydriding characteristics of ZrCoHx SDS bed with different initial hydriding temperatures.

With the development of fusion technology, it will be necessary to store a large amount of hydrogen isotopes in the reactor fuel cycle. To achieve high- density storage of hydrogen isotopes, stable metal hydrides are considered as potential candidates. Metal hydride formers offer a safe and convenient method for tritium storage. Different metal hydrides show various storage and delivery properties. Uranium and zirconium cobalt are considered as the most applicable hydrogen isotopes storage materials. Thus, equipment for comparative experiment of hydrogen isotope storage materials was fabricated. Heating test of beds in the equipment was performed.

A hydriding/dehydriding DAQ (Data Acquisition) system has been designed and fabricated to measure the temperature and pressure exactly for a twosome SDS (Storage and Delivery System) bed. A DAQ program has been prepared by using a LabVIEW 2010. A DAQ system was composed of sensors, signals, signal conditioning, DAQ hardware, and DAQ software. The signals between temperature and pressure sensors and DAQ devices, a personal computer, have been sent and received by using a LAN (Local Area Network) protocol. The noise reduction and SNR (Signal-to-Noise Ratio) amplification have enabled the measurements of temperature/pressure from DAQ devices to be easy. The personal computer has enabled the control of pumps/heaters. In emergencies, manual manipulations have enabled the control of pumps. The control of heaters for dehydriding and vacuum annealing has been performed by using a PID (Proportional Integral Derivative) control system.

A nuclear fusion fuel cycle plant is composed of various subsystems such as a hydrogen isotope storage and delivery system. Metal hydride beds are used for storing hydrogen isotope. We thus present details on the bed of hydrogen isotope storage for nuclear fusion fuel plants. A small DU bed was designed, manufactured and inspected. The thermal shields for the primary vessel were manufactured to reduce heat transfer from the primary vessel to the secondary vessel, and thermal loss. Helium leak inspections on the parts of primary & secondary vessels were performed. These results proved to have no leakage on the parts of the primary & secondary vessels.

Small and medium-sized glove boxes for the handling of depleted uranium were designed and fabricated. We controlled the moisture and oxygen concentration to < 1 ppm and placed depleted uranium into the primary vessel of the hydrogen isotope storage bed. This system consists of a glove box, a purification system and an antechamber, etc. In this study, the characteristics of the small and medium-sized glove box system for the handling of depleted uranium are presented for each component. Operation examples of the glove box system are also presented. The fabricated small and medium-sized glove box system will be utilized for the fabrication of the hydrogen isotope storage bed.

A vertical-type ZrCo bed was fabricated for recovery/delivery of hydrogen isotopes. The outer grooves and heater tubes was designed to have a good heat transfer. The helium loop and copper fins and the tube of helium loop inlet and the tube of helium loop outlet was prepared for a good heat transfer. To cool down the temperature of the ZrCo metal hydriding rapidly, the circulation of low temperature helium gas in helium loop and in tube in secondary vessel will be performed by using operating MBP602 and MBP302. And the test of recovery/delivery for vertical-type ZrCo bed will be performed. The temperature of primary vessel, ZrCo metal powder and the pressure of primary vessel will be measured, and the rates of recovery/delivery will be analyzed.

Filtration is the most widely utilized technique for air cleaning and sampling, and is applied in a variety of industries, such as respiratory protection, air cleaning of smelter effluents, processing of nuclear and hazardous materials, and particle collection in clean rooms. The purpose of this research is to improve the collection performance of filtration. This study was mainly focused on the characterization of filters and the way to maintain optimal performance of filtration.
