Femtosecond laser induced shock generation in water and vitreous humor of enucleated porcine eyeball was investigated. When focusing the femtosecond laser into the liquid mediums, the acoustic waves with a frequency of about 15.6kHz could be observed by using wide-band microphone. The amplitude of the acoustic signals from water has attained a maximum under a laser power of about 5mW. Further increment of the power results in a decrement of the acoustic signals due to nonlinear optical process including filamentation of laser beam. We have further investigated the effect of femtosecond laser induced acoustic waves by applying the laser pulse into enucleated porcine eyeball. The comparative studies on both healthy and diseased eyeballs led us propose that the femtosecond laser pulses could be utilized as a novel tools for treatment of partially detached retina layers from their choroid structures.

Much interests has been drawn for noble micro-engineering processes for the continuous size reduction on bulk materials from the field of micro-electronics with much downsized IC chips. A traditional microprocessing based on mechanical blade as well as a relatively long pulsed laser usually influence the physico-chemical properties of intact materials when the techniques are applied to process materials with a spatial resolution less than 10 microns. Meanwhile, ultrafast laser pulses are known to exhibit a very small heat-affect zone(HAE) compared to the traditional laser processing and to be applicable for the new functional materials with high performance in optical and electrical properties. In this report, we will review in brief the recent research works on the enhancement of micro-cutting speed of thin silicon wafer as well as the formation of Ge nanostructures based on ultrafast laser pulses.

We have studied the effects of the dynamics in ablation crater size on PDMS surface morphology in single-shot fs-laser pulse processing by adjusting two key experimental parameters: the laser repetition rate and distance between neighbor craters. Based on our experimental data, we proposed a theoretical model on their dynamic features to assess the correlation between the height of crater and inter-distance of the craters as well as roughness as a function of time-interval between laser pulses. Moreover, we will further discuss about the effects of the dynamics in crater size of cornea on the issues related on light scattering, which is frequently invoked as a major complication after LASIK operation.

Two-photon absorption coefficient of a series of dyes in polymer thin films was determined by measuring the femtosecond laser ablation threshold. The threshold value of polymeric thin films decreased gradually when the dopant increased. The two-photon absorption coefficient of the dye molecules dispersed in the polymer film was estimated by using the theoretical relationship between the ablation threshold of the blended polymeric thin films and the dye concentration. The relative values of two-photon absorption cross-section are in good agreement with those measured in solution. On the other hand, the absolute values are smaller than the latter.
