The specific gravity of wood treated with the essential oil penetration was higher than that of untreated wood. However, in case of oven-dried wood the difference of treated and untreated products decreased, compared with air-dried wood. The shrinkage of treated wood showed no consistent trend and the difference was trivial. In addition, similar trend was shown in each direction. Compression strength parallel to grain of treated wood was somewhat higher than that of untreated wood and the difference was trivial. The difference in static bending strength was slight and showed no consistent trend. The stage of check for Pinus koraiensis and Populus tomentiglandulosa and Alnus hirsuta was 2 stage and 3 stage, respectively. Deformation stage with no relation to the essential oil treatment was 1 stage for Pinus koraiensis, 2 stage Populus tomentiglandulosa and 3 stage for Ainus hirsuta, respectively, and there was no difference in essential oil penetration.

우리나라의 중요한 조림 수종 중에서 낙엽송을 대상으로 하여, 간벌실시에 따른 물리·역학적 성질을 비교 평가함으로써 간벌 실시가 목재의 재질에 미치는 영향과 양질재 생산 및 목재의 효율적 이용을 위한 연구결과는 다음과 같다. 간벌정도에 따른 시료는 무간벌, 약도간벌, 강도간벌을 실시한 광릉시험림에서 벌채하여 사용하였다. 간벌 정도에 따른 평균 만재율은 무간벌 < 약도간벌 < 강도간벌의 경향이었고 평균 연륜폭은 무간벌 < 약도간벌 또는 강도간벌의 경향이었다. 간벌 정도에 따른 평균 휨강도는 무간벌 > 약도간벌 >강도간벌의 경향이었고 간벌 정도에 따른 평균 압축강도는 무간벌 > 약도간벌 >강도간벌의 경향이었다. 이러한 결과로 낙엽송은 간벌에 의하여 휨 및 종압축강도가 감소하는 경향이었다. The purpose of this study was to determine the effects of plantation thinning on physical and mechanical properties of Larix kaempferi. Tree samples were obtained from unthinned, moderately, heavily thinned plantations where located in Kwangryung forest research stand. The effects of different thinning methods on the bending and parallel to grain compressive strengths of Larix kaempferi were explored. Average latewood ratio with various thinning treatments revealed the trend of unthinning < moderate thinning < heavy thinning treatment. Average annual ring width with various thinning treatments showed the trend of unthinning < moderate thinning or heavy thinning treatment. Average bending and parallel to grain compressive strengths with various thinning treatments revealed the trend of unthinning > moderate thinning > heavy thinning treatment. This indicates that thinning treatment reduces average bending and parallel to grain compressive strength properties.

This study was carried out to investigate the wood properties fur development the proper uses of lesser-known tree species. The tested species are Kebambang(Pentace sp.), Bawang-bawang(Dysoxylum alliaceum Bl.), Garu buaya(Gonysrylus brunescens A. Shaw) grown in Indonesia.<br/> Fundamental wood properties such as anatomical, physical, mechanical and chemical properties and characteristics related to wood processing were examined. The results are summarized as follows ;<br/> The woods of these species are diffuse porous, coarse textured, and interlocked grained. The heartwood of Kebambang is distinguished clearly to the sapwood, but the heartwood of other species are not distinguished clearly to the softwood.<br/> The woods of Kebambang and Bawang-bawang have the moderate weight density and the low strength properties, but Garu buaya has the high weight density and the high strength properties. The woods of these species has high shrinkage.<br/> The sawing characteristics of Kebambang are excellent, but the other species are moderate. The machining characteristics by planer and drying characteristics of these species are moderate. This study was carried out to investigate the wood properties for efficient utilization of warm temperate tree species of Quercus salicina grown in Korea. Fundamental wood properties in the anatomical, physical, mechanical and chemical characteristics were examined. Quercus salicina is radial-porous, straight grained and fine textured wood. The heartwood is not clearly distinguished from the sapwood. In physical properties, it has a high oven-thy specific gravity of 0.80±0.03, and high shrinkage from green to air-dried condition of 4.42±0.60% in radial and 10.31±0.50% in tangential direction. Mechanical properties determined are strong with the MOR of 1,170±l44kgf/㎠, and tensile strength parallel to grain of 1,851±236kgf/㎠ and shear strength of 182±10kgf/㎠. Also, this wood has high extractive contents : 10.64% for cold and 12.57% for hot water.

Marvelous calligraphy-woodcarving artwork was made by using the mysterious beauty of anatomical structure of wood. The wooden artwork uses not only beautiful external appearance of wood, but it also uses the mysterious beauty of anatomical micro structure of wood which can only be observed through optical microscope or scanning electron microscope. The characteristics of anatomical structure of wood were presented through various carving techniques. The used wood species for the artwork include Quercus acutissima Carruth., Cinnamomum japonicum Sieb., Betula davurica PALL, Magnolia kobus A.P.DC, Populus maximowiczii HENRY, Betula schmidtii REGEL and Plerocaya stenoptera DC. These various types of woodcarving techniques are anticipated to be applied to the tech art marketing for architecture as a field of environment art.

중밀도섬유판(MDF)에 글씨나 그림을 새김질한 목판을 제조하고, 이를 탄화하여 서각작품을 제작하는 방법을 개발하였다. 섬유판의 탄화에 따른 외형적 및 조직학적 변화를 검토하고 제작된 탄화보드 서각작품에 대한 미학적 특징을 고찰하였다. 서각한 MDF를 850°C에서 탄화한 결과, 할열이나 뒤틀림은 관찰되지 않았으며, 치수는 가로 21.8%, 세로 18.8%, 두께 43.5% 줄어들었고, 중량은 69.2%, 밀도는 14.8% 감소하였다. 탄화보드의 전자 현미경에 의한 관찰 결과, 당초 섬유의 표면과 벽공을 둘러싸고 있던 접착제가 탄화되면서 목질섬유의 표면이 매끄럽게 변하고 벽공이 개열되며 섬유의 크기가 균일화되고 조직이 치밀화되는 현상을 나타내었다. 수작업에 의한 서각기법과 무할열 탄화기법의 융합에 의해 새로운 탄화보드 서각작품의 제작이 가능하였다. 탄화보드 서각작품은 목탄의 기능성과 서각의 아름다움을 부여하는 새로운 친환경 예술영역의 한 분야로서 이용될 수 있을 것이다. This study was focused to make a wooden plate that is engraved with writings or pictures on the medium density fiberboard (MDF), and then to produce a calligraphy-carving artwork by carbonization of the carved MDF. The external appearances and anatomical changes were investigated on the carbonized MDF and aesthetic characteristics was also discussed. No split and no twist were found after the carbonization (at 850°C) of the calligraphy-encarved MDF, shrinkages of the MDF were observed with portions of 21.8% in length, 18.8% in width and 43.5% in thickness, and 69.2% of weight loss with density decrease of 14.8% were observed as well. From the observation of the carbonized board by a scanning electron microscope, specific phenomena were found: the adhesives, surrounding the fiber`s surface and pits, were carbonized, the woody fibers were changed smoothly, the pits were opened, the fiber`s size was uniformized, and the organization was compacted. By the combination of handmade calligraphy-woodcarving and crack-free carbonizing methods, it was able to find a new method for manufacture carbonized calligraphy-woodcarving artwork. It is concluded that the calligraphy-woodcarving artwork using carbonized board can be a new access for the eco-friendly art that has the advantage of the functionality of charcoal and the aesthetic of calligraphy-woodcarving simultaneously.
침전,훈증처리 소나무재선충병 피해목의 휨강도성능 및 경도에 관한 연구

This study used pine wilt disease damaged trees as raw materials The damaged woods were subjected to soaking treatment using wood vinegar, nematicide and sea water, Fumigated treatment using fumigation, and the bending strength and hardness of the timber were measured at different points of time after the treatment. In soaking treatment, the highest bending strength was obtained from wood vinegar (100 fold dilution)-soaked specimens of Pinus densiflora and the nematicide-soaked specimens of Anus tbunbergii. The highest hardness in cross section was gained from the nematicide-soaked specimens of Pin us densiflora and Anus thunbergi4 the highest hardness in radial section was obtained from the nematicide-soaked specimens of Pin us densiflora and wood vinegar (100 Fold dilution)-soaked specimens of Anus thunbergi4 and the highest hardness in tangential section was obtained from the nematicide-soaked specimens of Antis densiflora and Pinus thunbergii and there were not significantly different among the treatments. When fumigated treatment was applied, bending strength, hardness was somewhat lower in the control but were not significantly different between the treatments.
