이승훈,정석희,강호정,Vo, Nguyen Xuan Que,Lee, Seung-Hoon,Doan, Tuan Van,Jung, Sokhee P.,Kang, Hojeong 한국미생물학회 2014 미생물학회지 Vol.50 No.2
Various studies have been conducted to investigate effects of dams on river ecosystems, but less information is available regarding damming impacts on downstream denitrification. We measured denitrification enzyme activity (potential denitrification rate) and denitrifier abundances (using nirS, nirK, and nosZ as markers) in dammed headstreams of the Nakdong River in South Korea. Sediments in Phragmites-dominated riparian areas and in-stream areas across streams (dammed vs. reference) with different streambed materials (gravel and sand) were sampled occasionally. We hypothesized that (i) the higher available N and C contents in sediments downstream of dams foster larger denitrifier communities than in the reference system and (ii) differences in potential denitrification rates across the systems correspond with denitrifier abundances. Despite 30 years of different hydrological management with dams and greater inorganic N and DOC contents in sediments downstream of dams, compared to the references, abundances of denitrifier communities and potential denitrification rates within the whole sediment were not significantly different across the systems. However, nirS and nosZ denitrifier abundances and potential denitrification rates were considerably increased in specific sediments downstream of dams (gravelly riparian and sandy in-stream) with regard to flooding events and seasonal temperature variation. nirK was not amplified in all sediments. Canonical correspondence analyses (CCA) revealed that the relationship between abundances of denitrifier communities and nutrient availabilities and potential denitrification rates was a weak one.

Microbial fuel cell (MFC) is a system being developed for a next-generation energy-producing wastewater treatment process that treats wastewater and recovers energy. Because an MFC cathode performing oxygen reduction is a bottleneck in performance enhancement, significant improvement of the cathode performance is necessary for the practical implementation of MFC system. The most ideal oxygen reduction catalyst is known as platinum. However, platinum is expensive and not long-lasting, making it difficult to apply to a real application. For this reason, a lot of research has been conducted on development of cathode catalysts in the MFC field. In this review paper, the production method, performance, durability, and economics of various catalysts (i.e., carbon-based catalysts, metal-based catalysts, carbon-metal composite catalysts, metal-nitrogen-carbon structures, and biocatalysts) developed so far have been outlined and future research prospects were presented.

A sediment microbial fuel cell (SMFC) is a system in which MFC is applied to a sediment layer of an aqueous system for water purification. SMFCs can remove contaminants from sediments and decompose organic matter while simultaneously producing electrical energy. SMFC is installed in the form of installing an anode in the sediment at the bottom of the water system and a cathode in the water layer above the sediment, and connecting the two electrodes through an external circuit. Early SMFCs were developed to be used as power sources in hard-to-reach deep water areas or remote areas. However, recently, it has attracted a lot of attention as a technology for biologically purifying pollutants through its own power supply. Furthermore, it is being developed as a means of monitoring the environmental condition of the installed area. Despite the importance of SMFC, no comprehensive review has yet been published to the Korean readers on the trends and prospects of SMFC research. Therefore, in this review paper, the mechanism of SMFC, their mechanism of removal of organic, inorganic, and heavy metals, and the current state of SMFC technology are discussed, and future prospects are presented.

Vol.44 No.10
Currently, gray hydrogen and blue hydrogen are widely recognized as renewable energy, but in reality, they are made from fossil fuels. The most important task to achieve the hydrogen-based society is the development of economic green hydrogen production technology. Microbial electrolysis cell (MEC) is a next-generation energy-producing wastewater treatment technology that treats renewable organic wastewater and simultaneously produces the ultimate green hydrogen. For hydrogen production in MFC, it is necessary to input electrical energy into MEC. However, that energy is all covered by the energy produced by the MEC. Therefore, hydrogen production in MEC can be defined as the ultimate green hydrogen. This review contains an in-depth summary and analysis of the principles and feasibility of MEC technology, the composition and shape of MEC, electrode materials, and practical application cases in various types of wastewaters. Furthermore, compatibility and scalability with other environmental systems were reviewed at the pilot scale. Based on this, the technical limitations of MEC were diagnosed and future research directions for the practical application of MEC technology were suggested.
