Although nursing homes where physically weak seniors live must be planned as an healing environment for maintaining and improving holistic health conditions of the senior residents, many of the nursing homes in Korea are currently placed in poor environment due to lack of minimum criteria or design guideline for spatial planning. Therefore, this study aims to extract healing elements shown in nursing home design guidelines that have been developed and utilized in several developed welfare countries where aging has started before Korea. The subjects of this study were 4 international nursing homes design guidelines; and they were analyzed by the content analysis technique. As for analysis units, design guideline items were selected; and spatial composition, three dimensions of health, and healing elements for supporting the health conditions were used as analysis categories. As results, firstly, among total 259 guidelines, the guidelines that commonly applied to all the spaces turned out to be the most, then the guidelines to be applied in bathroom turned out to be the most. Secondly, in terms of holistic health, the proportion of design guideline for supporting physical health turned out to be highest followed by the one for mental health and social health. Thirdly, In terms of healing elements, items for safety, accessibility, comfort, and convenience that supported physical health and cognition that supported mental health turned out to be high. This study is expected to provide the framework for comprehensively understanding the existing design guidelines of nursing homes in the perspective of healing and to be utilized as fundamental resource for spatial planning to improve healing effects in the nursing homes in the future.
공모전 수상작 사례분석을 통한 지원주택의 공간특성 분석

This study intends to identify the spatial characteristics by carrying out the case studies of supportive housing examples of the Top Ten Projects awarded by the AIA Committee on Environments. Information of 7 awarded works was collected and content analysis was made according to design concepts and spatial compositions. As a result, the major design concepts applied to the examples were categorized into 5 points of regeneration of community, accessibility to the community, enhancement of spatial capability, participation and consensus of stakeholders and resident support services. Many supportive houses were built as a project to regenerate the deprived area and to reactivate the community through supplying supportive houses. In addition, supportive houses were developed by independent house type and shared house type and diverse scopes and sizes of community spaces were provided by including residents’ exclusive community spaces that provide diverse services to vulnerable residents in addition to individual residential spaces and the community spaces that promote the consensus of residents and community people. The results of this study are expected to be used as basic material that provides the direction of desirable spatial design for introducing supportive housings in Korea.
광주지역 내 유통 중인 반려동물 사료·간식의 미생물 오염도 및 식품첨가물 사용실태 조사

This study was conducted for safety evaluation on 130 pet food products, which are distributed in Gwangju, South Korea. The microbial contamination part and the usage of food additives part were mainly investigated. The five microorganisms that we tested were total viable cell counts (TVC), Coliforms, Salmonella spp., Campylobacter spp., pathogenic Escherichia coli and there were 15 products that exceed the microbial criteria or detected food poisoning bacteria. Specifically, Coliforms (13 products, 10%), TVC (9 products, 6.9%), Salmonella spp. (2 products, 1.5%), and E. coli (2 products, 1.5%) were followed. On the other hand, food additives such as preservatives, antioxidants and sodium nitrite were detected in 61 products. Among the preservatives, sorbic acid and benzoic acid were detected in 58 (44.6%) products. In antioxidants, Butylated hydroxytoluene (BHT) was detected in 3 (2.3%) products. In addition, preservatives and antioxidants were detected in 8 of 20 products labeled as 'additive-free'. Microbial contamination tended to occur mainly in small-scale individual homemade feed stores, while food additives were all detected in pet shops and supermarkets. Currently, the criteria for microorganisms and food additives for pet foods are insufficient in Korea. So, it is necessary to establish detailed feed standards and specifications for companion animals.

Hepatitis E Virus (HEV) infection is a worldwide disease and the primary cause of acute viral hepatitis in the world. It can be isolated from many different species including pigs. HEV is a zoonotic pathogen and foodborne disease. The main animal reservoir is domestic pigs. It is usually asymptomatic in pig but it is a public health concern, causing acute hepatitis in humans of varying severity. This study focused on the presence of HEV in pig and pork product. One hundred feces and one hundred fifty serum samples were randomly collected from pigs in slaughterhouses in Gwangju from November in 2018 to February in 2020. In addtion, seventy-five pork products were collected from markets in Gwangju. Feces and pork product samples were examined for the presence of HEV RNA using an reverse-transcription realtime PCR (RT-qPCR) assay. Serum samples were tested for the presence of HEV-specific IgG antibodies using Enzyme-linked immunosorbent assay (ELISA). HEV antigen and antibody positive rates were 3.0% (3/100) and 19.3% (29/150), respectively, in Gwangju and nearby areas such as Jeonnam and Jeonbuk. However, HEV antigen was not detected from any of pork product in this study. In conclusion, the prevalence of HEV should be continuously monitored because HEV was sporadically detected in Gwangju and nearby areas.
