This paper presents a practical restoration aid expert system for 154kV distribution substations. The proposed expert system has a topology based simple structure and it utilizes basic rules suggested by Korea electric power company including heuristic rules, topology identification rules and searching rules to generate switching sequence for feasible restoration process. In this paper, general system structure as well as rules and data representations is discussed. The expert system is realized using HP9000 workstation. X-window and Motif shell is used for user friendly GUI. It has been tested in a practical sub-control center as a part of the intelligent fault diagnosis and restoration aid system to assist decision making of SCADA operators.
Observations of Southeastward Deep Currents off the East Coast of Korea

Deep current was observed at 620 m and 790 m in water 840 m deep off the mid-east coast of Korea from August 26 to November 7, 1986. Data analysis showed that the deep current in the subinertial frequency range was directed to southeast with a vector-average speed of about 3 cm/s. The deep flow had a large temporal variability with the same pattern of variation at the two depths. The maximum speed of the low-frequency current reached to a value larger than 11 cm/s just after the passage of Typhoon Vera over the study area. We also observed occurrence of sharp direction changes from southeast toward north persisting for a few days.

Water masses and circulation in the yellow Sea (Hwanghae) were briefly reviewed and synthesized. Water masses were classified into four types: Hwanghae Cold Water, Hwanghae Warm Current Water, Coastal Waters and Changjiang River Diluted Water. The Hwanghae Cold Water can be defined to have a salinity of 32.0∼33.0% and a temperature below 10$^{\circ}C$, based on long-term hydrographic data and recent CTD casts (KORI, 1984). Concerning circulation, there exists a cyclonic gyre throughout the year in the southern part. In winter, the coastal current along the Chinese coast is very strong due to northerly or northwesterly winds and the Hwanghae Warm Current becomes weak as can be expected from a surface to bottom thermohaline front west of Cheju-do. Meanwhile in summer, the Changjiang River Diluted Water flows northeastward toward Cheju-do and the coastal current in the western part is greatly reduced. The northward current during summer in the southeastern Hwanghae has been accepted to be the Hwanghae Warm Current until now, coastal waters and the Hwanghae Cold Water in the central deep area, not a continuation of the Hwanghae Warm Current.

Spatio-temporal variabilities of seawater temperature at 0 and 30m in the southeastern Hwanghae were studied by variance and empirical orthogonal function(EOF) analysis of long records of temperature between 1967 and 1982. The spatial distribution of monthly mean sea surface temperature has a pattern similar to the long-term annual mean which decreases from south to north. On the contrary, the total variance computed from the annual mean of sea surface temperature(SST) increases from south to north. The variance of SST is found to be two times greater than that at 30m in the study area except coastal area south of Kyunggi Bay. The important variance of temperature seem s to be closely associated with the seasonal change of temperature because the first and second modes of EOF having a seasonal cycle explain 97.6% and 85.2% of variances at 0 and 30m, respectively. There is a large difference in temperature between the northern and southern parts of the study area during winter, while the difference becomes very small during summer. This might reflect that in summer the heat gain of sea surface from the incoming radiation is much more important than the heat loss or the oceanic heat advection. In summer coastal waters south of the Kyunggi Bay and around Mokpo are observed to be colder than offshore waters due to tidal mixing.

The trend of physical oceanography research in Korea till 1992 is briefly described. Research papers and activities are reviewed and classified according to the research field and geographic area. so this work ca be served as a reference in planning future researches and surveys. Most of the research areas are confined to the nearshore around the Korean Peninsula and the research field do not extend far beyond the classic subjects of physical properties of water masses and tides. etc. Future researches should thus be oriented to the basin-scale circulation aiming at the national oceanographic tasks such as the formation of the Tsushima Warm current, circulation in the Yellow-East china Seas, and three dimensional circulation of the East (Japan) Sea.

This paper presents an expert system approach to diagnose the fault in an unmanned substation. In the proposed expert system, fault section is estimated from the received informations on protective devices in SCADA system. And it is designed to explain the operating sequence of protective devices caused by the fault and to display the result of diagnosis according to possibility. The expert system is developed using an artificial intelligence language, "PROLOG". The depth-first search method is adopted for problem solving strategy. Backward reasoning schemes are utilized for the reasoning process.
