The authors attempted to isolate Enterobacteria which might have been contaminated on some vegetables commonly consumed as raw by Korean natives during the period from Aug. 2 to Aug. 21, 1976. 39 cultures of Gram-negative rods were isolated from 30 specimens of chinese cabbages, 10 young radishes and 10 green onions collected from several markets and fields near Seoul. Of 39 cultures isolated, 34 cultures of Enterobacteria were identified, but 5 cultures of them were not able to be identified. Of 34 cultures identified, 3 cultures of Escherichia coli, 7 cultures of Citrobacter, 5 cultures of Enterobacter, 5 cultures of Proteus and 1 culture of Serratia were identified and 13 cultures were not able to be classified at Genus level. Salmonella and Shigella organisms were not detected from the specimens, but it was discussed that the possibility of their detection might be considered because Escherichia coli cultures, as an indicator of fecal contamination, were detected from some of those specimens.
