According to IEA (International Energy Agency), carbon dioxide (CO₂) emissions due to the energy consumed by buildings are accounted for about 24% of the total CO₂ emissions. Extensive studies related with reducing CO₂ emissions have been carried out after the 2000s. For the environmentally sound and sustainable development, it is considerably important to design buildings considering CO₂ emissions in the conceptual design stage. Especially, unlike the steel structures, CO₂ emissions are different for each material (e.g. steel and concrete) used in the reinforced concrete (RC) structure. So, the volumetric ratio occupied by each material will have an effect on CO₂ emissions. In other words, it is necessary to know the CO₂ emissions relationship between two materials in order to reduce CO₂ emissions of RC structures. This study is on target to investigate CO₂ emissions of steel and concrete depending on material strengths and loading conditions in RC columns.
