This qualitative study, conducted as a follow-up to Lee’s (2014) experimental study, examined aspects and features of Instructional Conversation (IC) and IC discourse that serve to assist English as a foreign language (EFL) learners in their WebQuest writing performance. Interview data were collected from the three most successful online IC participants in Lee’s study and were subsequently analyzed using within-case and cross-case thematic analysis methods. Results indicated that (a) the structure/sequence of IC, (b) interactive participation, and (c) thematic focus assisted the EFL learners in their overall WebQuest writing performance, that (a) the structure/sequence of IC and (b) thematic focus assisted them in their performance on content, and that IC’s facilitation of understanding of content, along with the resulting improvement in other components of overall writing quality, assisted them in their performance on overall writing quality. An analysis of the texts from the online IC discussions in which the three interviewees participated revealed that the common themes identified through the cross-case analysis of the interview data were well manifested or reflected in the IC discussion data. Implications are discussed in both theoretical and practical terms.

The protective effects of tartary buckwheat and common Korean buckwheat cultivars, yangjul-maemil and daesan-maemil, against oxidative stress and gastric cancer were evaluated. The treatment of the methanol extract from tartary buckwheat, yangjul-maemil and daesan-maemil showed over 80% scavenging effect against 1,1-diphenyl-2-picrylhydrazyl at 250 μg/ml. In addition, all buckwheats showed over 80% ㆍOH scavenging activity even at low concentration of 50 μg/ml. In order to investigate the anti-inflammatory activity of tartary buckwheat, yangjul-maemil and daesan-maemil, we employed nitric oxide (NO) induced cellular inflammatory system using RAW 264.7 macrophage cells. The results showed that tartary buckwheat, yangjul-maemil and daesan-maemil inhibited NO production generated by both exotoxin of sodium nitroprusside and endotoxin of lipopolysaccharide & interferon-gamma. Morever, tartary buckwheat and daesan-maemil showed the strong antimicrobial activity (clear zone >14 mm)against Helicobacter pylori. Yangjul-maemil and daesan-maemil also inhibited the growth of AGS human gastric adenocarcinoma cells by up to 70% at concentration of 1,000 μg/ml. The present results indicate that buckwheats showed protective effects against oxidative stress and gastric cancer. (Cancer Prev Res 16, 249-254, 2011)
Effects of Post-Reading Instructional Scaffolds on EFL Learners’ WebQuest Writing Performance
이해송 한국영어교육학회 2014 ENGLISH TEACHING(영어교육) Vol.69 No.3
This study investigated the effects of types of post-reading instructional scaffolds on university-level English as a foreign language (EFL) learners’ WebQuest writing performance. One hundred twenty students, randomly selected from 8 EFL classes at a Korean university, were randomly assigned to one of three treatment conditions: (a) online Instructional Conversation (IC), (b) online recitation, or (c) no post-reading instructional scaffold (i.e., control). After reading WebQuest texts, the online IC and online recitation groups received their treatments, using an Internet-based synchronous textual communication tool as a medium for communication. The control group, on the other hand, did not receive any post-reading instructional scaffold and continued to read the WebQuest texts for the same amount of time that the IC and recitation groups received their treatments. Results showed that the online IC group outperformed one or both of the other two groups in overall WebQuest writing performance and in the specific areas of overall writing quality and content. Implications are discussed in both theoretical and practical terms.
