Shelley's Hellenic Idealism
Vol.34 No.-
Politics were probably the dominating concern in shelley's intellectual life and he was always responsive to the exigencies of the political element. Consequently it should be no surprise that his theory of poetry attaches great significance to the social function of literature. Scarcely had the defeat of the Neapolitan armies beer announced than Shelley received news of the outbreak of the Greek war against the Turkish Empire, and soon he was eagerly following its development in the papers. In October 1821 he was working on hellas in the hope that it would incite liberals and revolutionaries everywhere to rally to the Greek cause. It is generally believed that Hellas is a political poem to celebrate the Greek War against the Turks "as a portion of the cause of civilization and moral improvement." This belief would oversimplify the work and fail to notice Shelley's real aims behind it. The present dissertation has attempted to deal with the work fundamentally as a political poem and at the same time to go further to treat it as a highly ethical and metaphysical poem. In short, Hellas represents a romantic apotheosis of the Hellenic ideal as Shelley saw it.

An animated discussion pivots around whether Shelley was an "atheist" as he declared himself to be or a "theist" as Southey and others called him―a baffling question largely posed as he blew hot and cold on Jesus' value as ethical teacher. Shelley was born into a smug, conventionally Christian home, and was no doubt exposed to the doctrines of the Anglican Church. But he eagerly questioned the validity of some of the fundamental tenets of the Christian religion and became a believer in deism. Because it satisfied his scientific spirit, his sense of reasonable ethics and commonsense morality, deism made a strong, but short-lived, appeal to Shelley. Following reason as his guide, he thought that the God of the deist like that of the Christian is an absurd and unrealistic God and in 1811 adopted his pantheistic belief that the Universe is animated, and is God, which has not undergone any significant change ever since. Shelley never was an orthodox Christian. In his mind Jesus was a man, a great, perhaps the greatest, moral teacher the world has known, and not an anthropomorphic God ; consequently Shelly did not believe in the miraculous birth or death or mission of Jesus―he did believe that "the moral sayings of Jesus Christ might by very useful if selected from the mystery and immorality which surrounds them." Shelley's anti-Christian inclination which resulted from borrowed thinking and emotional prejudice masquerading as irrefutable logic entered his thinking early and remained to the end. But he came later to a profound admiration for the ethical thought of Jesus Christ, believing that the whole teaching of Christianity had been utterly perverted and falsified by his follewers. A study of his letters and other pronouncements and, specifically, Prometheus Unbound shows that Shelley was a real Christian in its limited sense.

I always seek in what I see the manifestation of something beyond the present and tangible object. -Shelley to Peacock, Nov.6, 1818. But in Alastor we have pictures of nature for their own sake and adventurous wandering for its own sake. -Raymond D. Havens, in Shelley's Alastor

Shelley'(1792-1822)하면 대부분의 독자들은 "Ode to the West Wind"를 떠올리고 늘 인구에 회자되는 마지막 행 - If Winter comes, can Spring be far behind?
