근대 중국의 시진(市鎭) 연구 -1860~1936년 양자강 중하류 지역을 중심으로

이 글은 현대화 이론을 참조하여 양자강 중하류 지역을 중심으로 근대 공상업과 교통운수업을 가지고 사회경제사적인 시각에서 전통 시진(市鎭)의 근대적 전형에 대해 종합적으로 고찰한 것이다. 이른바 전통 시진이란 근대 이전 현성과 향촌 사이에 존재하면서 상대적으로 독립적 지위를 갖고 있었던 상업적 실체이다. 근대적 전형이라는 것은 기계공업이 주도한 일련의 사회 변화를 지칭하는 것으로, 그것은 전통 사회를 근대 사회로 점차 이행하도록 이끌었다. 근대 공상업과 근대 교통운수업을 통해 볼 때, 양자강 중하류 지역 전통 시진의 근대적 전형은 완만하고 복잡했다. 대체로 절대 다수의 시진에서는 결코 근대적 전형이 나타나지 않았다. 지역 시장 체계로 볼 때 통상항과 대,중 도시에 가까운 시진은 근대 전형의 역량이 그와 같이 광대한 향촌 사회에 둘러싸여 있는 기층 집시(集市)보다 컸다. 말하자면 농촌 시장체계의 중심 시장 또는 전문 시장 역할을 담당하는 대중형 시진은 농촌시장 체계 내부의 상품 유통과 도시 시장체계와 농촌 시장체계 간의 상품 유통 역할을 담당했다. 그들의 근대적 전형은 비교적 명확하다. 그렇지만 이러한 시장의 수는 제한적이었으며 더 많은 농촌의 기층시장은 여전히 전통적 유형의 농산품 교환 집산지로 남아 근대적 색채가 별로 없었다. The thesis is going to inspect fully modern transformation of traditional market town from the angle of social and economic history, depending on the theory of modernization, centering on the middle and lower reaches of Yangtze River, and focusing on modern industry, commerce and transport. The traditional market town is a commercial entity which falling in between city and village, and possessing an independent position relatively. Modern transformation means a series of social changes which is machine-oriented and cause transition from traditional societyto modern society gradually. From perspective of modern industry, commerce and transport, the modern transformation of the traditional market town in the middle and lower reaches of Yangtze River was slow and complex. In general, most market towns had not fulfilled modern transformation. From perspective of regional market system, the vigor of modern transformation of those market towns, which adjoin treaty ports, metropolis and middle cities, exceeded those vast fairs in countryside society. That is to say, the large and middle market towns, that acted as the central market or professional market of rural market system, played a role in promoting commodity circulation of inner rural market system,and exchange between urban and rural markets. Although theirmodern transformation was obvious relatively, the number of such markets was limited. More rural fairs were still traditional distributing centers of farm produces, and had lighter modern color.
