In oxygen therapy, there are two types of popular methods: Continuous Flow Oxygen (CFO), which delivers high concentration oxygen continuously, and Demand Oxygen Delivery (DOD) which delivers oxygen only during inhalation. Since CFO wastes supplied high concentration oxygen during exhalation, DOD has been preferred recently. Existing DOD devices often made uncomfortable feeling to some patients because oxygen shoots suddenly at inhalation and oxygen delivery curve rises rapidly than user's normal breathing flow curve. To remedy this problem, we have investigated Synchronized Oxygen Delivery which provides more comfortable feeling at various breathing patterns. In this study, we developed an algorithm to predict breathing pattern for the new oxygen delivery device. Oxygen delivery was initiated right before beginning of inhalation and supplied smoothly, thus the new method may make patients comfortable in breathing.

A patient with respiratory disorders such as a sleep apnea is increasing as the obese patient increase on the modern society. Positive Airway Pressure (PAP) devices are used in curing patient with respiratory disorders and turn out to be efficacious for patients of 75%. However, these devices are required for evaluating their performance to improve their performance by the mechanical breathing simulator. Recently, the mechanical breathing simulator was studied by the real time feedback control. However, the mechanical breathing simulator by an open loop control was specially required in order to analyze the effect of flow rate and pressure after operating the breathing auxiliary devices. Therefore the aims of this study were to make the mechanical breathing simulator by a piston motion and a valve function from the characteristic test of valve and motor, and to duplicate the flow rate and pressure profiles of some breathing patterns: normal and three disorder patterns. The mechanical simulator is composed cylinder, valve, ball screw and the motor. Also, the characteristic test of the motor and the valve were accomplished in order to define the relationship between the characteristics of simulator and the breathing profiles. Then, the flow rate and pressure profile of human breathing patterns were duplicated by the control of motor and valve. The result showed that the simulator reasonably duplicated the characteristics of human patterns: normal, obstructive sleep apnea (OSA), mild hypopnea with snore and mouth expiration patterns. However, we need to improve this simulator in detail and to validate this method for other patterns.

Phellinus baumii is a medicinal mushroom used in Asian countries for a long period of time. The purpose of this study was to investigate the skin whitening activities of methanol extracts from fruiting bodies of P. baumii. To evaluate the antioxidant activities of the extract, polyphenol and flavonoid contents, and 2,2-diphenyl-1-picrylhydrazyl (DPPH) free radical scavenging activity and chelating activity on ferrous ions were studied. For assay of skin whitening activities, tyrosinase and DOPA inhibitory activities, and tyrosinase and melanin synthesis inhibitory activities of B16/F10 melanoma cells treated with the methanol extract were investigated. The total polyphenol content of P. baumii methanol extract was 4.19. DPPH scavenging ability of P. baumii methanol extract was 88.26% in 25 μg/mL concentration. We tested tyrosinase inhibitory activity and melanin contents in melanoma cells. The tyrosinase activity was inhibited to 65.17% at the concentration of 125 μg/mL and melanin synthesis was inhibited to 57.61% at the concentration of 25 μg/mL. Overall, the experimental results showed that P. baumii methanol extract had inhibitory activities of tyrosinase and melanin synthesis by dose dependent manner in B16/F10 melanoma cells. Strong ultra-violet absorption spectra in the range of 270~370 nm indicated that ethanol extract of P. baumii could protect the skin from UV. Therefore, P. baumii methanol extract might be used for development of skin whitening, anti-UV and skin care agents.

This study investigates the buckling evaluation of connecting rods used in the diesel engine through finite element analysis. The Rankine formula, which is modified from classical Euler’s formula, has been widely accepted in automotive industry to evaluate the buckling of connecting rods. Apparently, this formula is most suitable for the straight and idealized rod shape, and over-simplifies the geometric complexity associated with connecting rods. The subspace iteration method in FEA is used to predict the critical buckling stress of a connecting rod with certain slenderness ratio. To create models with various slenderness ratios for shank portion in the rod, the automatic meshing preprocessor was implemented. Results from FEA were verified by the experiments, in which the embedded strain gages measured for the connecting rod running at 4000rpm. The result indicates that the buckling prediction curve through FEA and experiment is effectively different from the curve of classical Rankine formula.

PMMA which is used as the bone cement for vertebroplasty is able to be a supporter, as a fixing<br/> supporter role, for broken trabecular structure, caused by the compressed fracture of spine on aged<br/> osteoporosis.<br/> In this thesis, as experimenting apparent density of bone pieces, we have figured out support extent<br/> of Young's modulus as classifying the bone pieces injected PMMA and the others which are not. In<br/> case of low apparent density of PMMA in some bone, Young's modulus seems to be more supportable<br/> to bone. On the other hand, if apparent density of bones is normal, injection of PMMA is not very<br/> effective on improvement in Young's modulus of bone cement injection.
