李昌龍 建國大學校 人文科學硏究所 1980 인문과학논총 Vol.13 No.-

Toegye was not only the great acholar of Confucianism in modern Korea who acted up to the principles of Confucian philesophy 'cultivate one's moral culture and manage one's family', but also the poet who wrote many good poems in his spare moments no less than other famous poets did. Heo kywn said that Toegye was a poet who could stand compoarison with any other famous poet as wellas a metaphysicist. More than two thousand poems might supply evidence ample enough to show his phase as a great poet. but it was because of his fame of a great scholar that he was referred to as scholar, not as a poet. The object to study this thesis is to find out the picture of a poet in his poetry and its several characteristics appeared through its materials and themes they are as follows. First, the theme of his love for nature and escape from reality expressed in his poetry could be comparable to that of other existing poets. Secondly, since he suffered from poor health during his lifetime, it was quite natural that he should deal with disease as a material. And then, he would want to retreat from the government office, thinking that he couldn't serve the king on account of his poor health and pay the king his debt of gratitude. Thirdly, he would deal with wine as a material of the poetry quite a lot. but he did not take to drink and loved to drink as a social way of living. Fourthly, he enjoyed to deal with plum trees and at last he wrote about one hundred poems related with a plum tree which was, he thought, a symbol of ideal beauty. Lastly, he placed the pleasure for reading above any other pleasure. His wide and profound knowledge on philosophy made his poetry put the philosophical level; while it was said that some of his poems were so metaphysical that they often might lose their own poetic function.

      • 李朝文學과 陶淵明 : 比較文學的 觀點에서 考察

        李昌龍 건국대학교 1974 學術誌 Vol.18 No.1

Throughout the period of Three Kingdoms and Yi Dynasty Korean literature had been much influenced by Chinese. In order that I might examine how the poets of Koryo had accepted the thought of Do Yun-myung, I have once announced the title "Poets of Koryo and Do Yun-myung." This paper can be considered as a series of the preceding one. In case this paper is finished, I take for it granted that the ·two papers will be called by the title "Acient Korean Literature and Do Yun-myung." At that period Korean writers had a high regard for man and life of Do Yun-myung, let alone his works. He was so poor that he could not be obliged to engage as a government officer. As he disliked, however, being under restriction of salaried life, he discharged life of Government affairs. Returning his home-town, he wrote his masterpiece "Kwikeryasa" with retiring from urban life. All the poets of Koryo and Yi Dynasty were so much deeply touched by this work that it was quite natural that his idea and thought should be penetrated into their own works. His work had influence more deeply upon the writers of Yi Dynasty than those of Koryo. The former were inpressed by even every phrase and sentence of it. Therefore, it follows that through his work they realized the pleasure of rural life. The work "Dowhawongi" was the world of fiction he created. Whenever he confronted with discontent and despair about the present social conditions, he tried to seek for the new world of diction. It was the "Mureungdowon" that he had created under those circumstances. Its world was the utopia, isolated from the outside, which was filled with peach blossoms. Accordingly, the writers of Yi Dynasty never see those flowers without reminding of "Mureungdowon" and longing for it. And also, actually, they used to find the world of this fiction in the deep valley and mountain. So it went without saying that they were under the influence "Dowhawongi." Do Yun-myung lived lonely and looked on the dark sight of the thing, because he thought that man's life was transitory. And he took to drink so that he might forget the troubled life, and then he used drink as many subject matters of poetry. The writers of Yi Dynasty were greatly got through discontent and despair than those of Koryo in the side of the social state. However, manly works which had treated drink as a subject matter could also be found more in the works of Koryo than those of Yi Dynasty. That was why the writers of Yi Dynasty were under the influence of stringent Confucian rules. The writers of those periods would like to plant five willow-trees around their houses under following the example of his work "The story of Oryoo Teacher." In accordance with the phrase of Do Yun-myung "the yellow chrysanthemum under the eastern edge," they used to plant Chrysan themum under the eastern fence. They were so inspired with his works as to do just like that. Te conclude, Do Yun-myung deserves to be said to have contribute greatly to ancient Korean writers.

        李昌龍 건국대학교 1981 學術誌 Vol.25 No.1

There were some Korean scholars who gave explanatory notes partly on Tu Fu's poetry earlier than Lee Taekdang did, but they did not comment on all of his poetry like this book 「Critical Comment on Tu Fu's Poetry.」 The level of this book was not less high than those of Chinese senior commentators' in some respects. He wouldn't blindly follow their opinions, but he set forth his opinion logically, making some references to the elders'. He escaped from exegetical studies, and unfolded historical investigations exactly, positive and creative commentary. This attitude for study showed that he had a modern way of thought. In revising the original of Tu Fu's poetry, he asserted himself that some words of the poem were even incorrect. In addition to referring to other books, he never failed to prove his theory with entire propriety. In the strong confidence in his study he had a tendency to overemphasize himself to a strained interpretation. Sin Wi, a scholar of Chinese classics in Yi Dynasty, said of this book that there were so many people who loved to learn Tu Fu's poetry, and it was precious enough for every family to keep carefully. As he said so, this hook not only was popular with everyone from beginners to experts, but also made a great contribution to throw a new light on the beginners and make them understand rightly and intelligibly. And at last this book reached its climax towards the end of Koryo Dynasty. Tu Fu's poetry was not overestimated at the role of its mediation for which it was easily received in Korean literature and developed the Chinese classics greatly. At the same time the achievement of Lee Taekdang which could provide this opportunity shouldn't be less valued.
