A smart home system improves the elderly's quality of life by monitoring and analyzing their movements and health conditions with better health-care and social support services. Therefore, there has been an effort to adopt a smart home system for the independently living elderly. However, to the best of our knowledge, no study has investigated the usability of a smart home system on actual independently living elderly housing in long-term settings. Thus, this study aims to demonstrate the usability of a smart home system on independently living elders in living lab conditions. The BLE smart band and the BLE receiver were chosen for the smart home system to monitor the movement of the participants in their homes as well as to monitor the heart rates, step counts, sleep index. Nine independent living elderly from the senior welfare center in Kimjae participated in this living lab demonstration experiment for ten months. This demonstration experiment confirmed the effectiveness of low-cost and easily adoptable IoT-based BLE sensor sets on independent living elders and discussed the troubles and limitations of the experiment. By grasping the pros and cons of IoT-based BLE sensor sets, this study seeks to improve the accessibility and usability of smart home systems for the elderly population in independent living arrangements.

Home has significant meaning in the real world. In contrast, there's a lack of interest in homes in the Metaverse compared to other architectural spaces. This study aims to establish the concept of a home in the Metaverse based on meaning, typology, and characteristics of real-world homes. For this purpose, previous research and existing models of real- world homes were analyzed and case studies and a survey were conducted of homes in the Metaverse. As a result of the research, a model of home in the Metaverse is proposed based on physical, social, and personal models. Modifying one's dwelling, a refuge from the outside world, and self-expression/personalized space was also identified as the most significant characteristic of a home in the Metaverse. The results of this study will be helpful in future Metaverse virtual world research and development of Metaverse service platforms.

The main goal of this research was to understand housing environment as well as the living behaviors of Korean people who reside in foreign countries. This study includes examination of dwelling units, especially focusing on dwelling behaviors by space types, arrangement and use of the space, and the according residence patterns of the Koreans in the United States. Focus group interview method and survey method were conducted; photography were taken as a visual evidence; and results were analyzed by researchers. This study strongly indicates that most of Koreans try to keep their own way of living in foreign cultures and rather readjust the housing spaces and living patterns to their own culture. The results from this study have limitations in generalizing all Korean families living in foreign cultures, because a convenience sample was used. Although studies of Korean families in Columbia, MO may not provide information that can be generalized to the entire population of Koreans overseas, we expect that this study provides useful insight in understanding and estimating the future trends in residential planning for Koreans.
Vol.13 No.2
The streets in the low-rise multi-family housing area increase the fear of crime among residents due to the structure of the space and difficulties in maintenance. In particular, women have a higher fear of crime than men and are more sensitive to the environment. Therefore, it is necessary to study environmental factors that can lower the fear of crime in standards of women. This study analyzed the difference between the fear of crime for men and women, their crime-related attitudes, and the effect of street environmental factors on the fear of crime for men and women in low-rise multi-family housing areas. For this purpose, we identified the factors affecting the fear of crime in the streets in the low-rise multi-family housing area by analyzing previous studies. We presented various levels of street environmental factors in four categories: building, street space, lighting, and security system, and conducted a photograph-questionnaire survey. The results showed a clear difference in fear of crime and crime-related attitudes according to gender. We also found a clear difference in fear of crime perceived by men and women according to the street environmental factors of low-rise multi-family housing areas. Furthermore, we identified the lack of natural surveillance and insufficient lighting as street environmental factors that women feel higher fear of crime. Lastly, floor signage and sign boards installed for the Safe Trip Home Project for Women can reduce fear of crime for women. These findings can provide fundamental data for designing a safe urban street environment for men and women without fear of crime.
