Vol.39 No.-

Murdoch constantly considered ethical issues and suggested a vision of unification as a way to save the dry human society. Murdoch’s vision of unification is based on the recognition of true reality of individuals. Murdoch criticized the Western binary system because the system has a dangerous tendency for people to judge others according to their own self-centered code. Her vision begins with loving attention, a just and loving gaze directed upon individual reality. According to her we should admit the contingency of others through loving attention for people and the world. It makes us see true reality without distortion or fantasy. In her novel Under the Net selfish and illusioned characters come to recognize their own fantasy and attain to the vision of unification. Under the Net is narrated by a first person narrator Jake who is a Bohemian and selfish outsider. At the beginning, he just wanders about without any goal and any real relationship with others. However, through his friendship with Hugo he comes to recognize reality of the world and others. The key to Murdoch’s fiction lies in hero’s recognizing his fantasy and coming to find the reality of others. Her novels are dramatization of the lives of the people who are confused or deluded by fantasy but who seek enlightenment freedom and understanding of reality by attaining to the vision of unification.

Vol.65 No.2

This paper provides an overview of interpreting madness using Shakespeare’s and Cervantes’s works. The time when Shakespeare and Cervantes were active was a time of madness where chaos and change coexist. According to a study by Michel Foucault, madness was not considered a disease in ancient times, but rather a mystical phenomenon that approached God and showed origin, and through various forms during the Renaissance, ‘madness’ was also seen as a positive factor. He thought that madness could pursue a fantastic truth that could not be proved by science or rational logic, and that there were some cases of genius through madness. Two genius writers, Shakespeare and Cervantes, show not only ghostly and magical supernatural phenomena, but also the wandering of the crazed characters in their works, Hamlet and Don Quite. Through their works, they unleashed madness, a festive and utopian energy, in the lives of the people oppressed by the ruling forces and norms. Two writers stimulated real-life readers and made them see the world from a new perspective. Shakespeare and Cervantes opened the door to the Renaissance period through madness, implementing the value of human liberation from restraint and leading the great change of ‘human discovery.’ (Daejeon Health Institute of Technology)

Vol.61 No.2

This article focuses on the incompleteness of our reality embedded within Doris Lessing`s The Golden Notebook, a novel with a highly experimental narrative structure about Anna Wulf, who is an expatriate African, a former Communist, a divorcee, an author of one successful book, and a keeper of four notebooks. In The Golden Notebook, Lessing specially introduces one of the defining features of postmodernism, incompleteness, in the process of dismantling the subject and text. Lessing who finds realism incapable of describing the divided society comes to see a new way embracing the chaotic and formless reality. Lessing`s parody of 19th century realism, convoluted structure and metafiction reestablish the connections between text and world by suggesting that there is no real objectivity of reality but chaos and incompleteness. As Lessing insists in the preface of the novel, breakdown or fragmentation is a way of self-healing in a messy, chaotic reality. The term `incompleteness` refers to real shape of our reality itself. Lessing`s novel breaks down realist conventions to strip us of our modernist expectation that texts are closed systems. Through this realization Anna, the protagonist, is able to transpose the conventional concept of a traditional narrative and conclude the novel by starting Anna full circle at the beginning of the story, thus creating a whole new work of fiction with a completely different character.

Vol.57 No.2

One of the most gifted and prolific novelists of the twentieth century and a noted moral philosopher, Iris Murdoch was concerned with recent ethical issues. Murdoch`s philosophical vision is based on the recognition of true reality of individuals. By using fantastical elements in her novel, Murdoch stressed that selfish and illusioned characters come to recognize their own fantasy and attain to the vision of reality. Charles Arrowby in The Sea, the Sea, is a famous theatre director and actor who has retired to the seaside. His aspiration for power leads him to confuse dream with reality, imagination with perception. At the end, he comes to realize he was a self-centered man who has simply followed fantasy without knowing the reality of himself and others around him. Murdoch`s novels are dramatizations of the lives of the people who are confused or deluded by fantasy but who seek enlightenment, freedom, and understanding of reality.

Vol.7 No.-

The media has merged into multi-media when the more technology for computer advanced. Particularly technical field of game, the development of interface has making rapidly progress. A Tangible of an input interface that takes only the user's motion without any instruments like a mouse a keyboard or joystick is the most recent used primarily for interactive game. The motion input interface uses a very simple algorithm to create a multi-media art work even if the typical web-cam could be used as a sensory of input interface. I'm making the algorithm of a Tangible of game's motion-tracking on this paper and also produce a multi-media video by using this algorithm.

Vol.59 No.2

This paper aims to analyse John Fowles’ The French Lieutenant’s Woman through his narrative technique for freedom and search for reality. John Fowles’ The French Lieutenant’s Woman displays fictionality and fantasy structuring the novel and thus strengthens the illusion of reality by presenting Sarah as fluidity of image by employing authorial commentary and by giving three multiple endings. The text is constructed as a self-conscious challenge to narrative conventions, in which the author intrudes on the fictional story. Also this novel is Fowles’ social fiction which can make horizontality of existence and free from strict Victorian custom and ideas. The characters’ quest for liberation from Victorian social custom is entwined with the novel’s quest for freedom from literary convention. (Daejeon Health Sciences College)

Vol.30 No.1

This paper aims at discussing how effectively and artistically Murdoch and Fowles express their theories of freedom and reality with transformed realism. Through Murdoch's transcendental realism, she shows us the vision of freedom which is followed by complete recognition of true reality. This vision means that we should admit the otherness of people and the contingency of outer world through a loving attention so that we could see the true reality without any distortion or fantasy. In this way, we can get over the egoistic instinct, experience love and freedom, and then come closer to true reality. Fowles uses realism-parody which is much the same as Victorian novels. Although he accepts Victorian stories and situation with time order, he stresses the importance of free characters in fiction. He comments on the action, but he does not control it. In addition, meta-fiction method, three different endings, and mirrorlike form make the reader including characters break the boundary between the real and fiction, then they could be free from their form. He attempts to free the readers from the traditional role of passive and uninvolved observer of the action. Fowles, in breaking down traditional reality and fiction dichotomy, depicts the recognition of freedom and true reality. < Paichai University >
