The crashworthiness concept is getting important in rolling stock design to minimize injury on passengers and drivers in the event of crash. In this paper, the characteristics of dynamic collapse of energy absorption component that is used on rolling stock are analyzed for studying the importance of crashworthiness. Also, finite element analysis and experimental method are used for analyzing dynamic characteristics of energy absorbing component. First, the result of finite element analysis is compared with the measured absorbing energy of absorbing component through crash test for rolling stock. Through this, the energy absorbing capability of the component was verified.

Obstacle deflector is a device to protect the train from obstacles laid on the track which is installed at the extreme end of the underframe of the car. This is the device related to the safety during crash event and its strength and energy absorbing requirements are recommended in various standards such as Korean Railway Safety Act, EN15227 and GM/RT2100. Although there are some differences among the standards, the basic concepts are similar. The deflector should endure the impact force without permanent deformation, and if the forces over the strength limit are applied, deflector has to absorb energy by push back mechanism maintaining proper reaction force. Therefore the evaluation of the deflector needs to be verified by the large deformation non-linear analysis as well as the linear analysis. This paper describes the FEA process and results of a deflector which is designed according to GM/RT2100 and EN15227 standards.
