Background/Aims: Tumor associated glycoprotein 72(TAG-72) is expressed mainly in the adeno-carcinoma involving the colon, stomach, pancreas, and endometrium. This study was performed to investigate the relationship between the expression of the TAG-72 and the invasiveness of the gastric carcinoma. Methods: Sixty-five cases of gastric carcinoma patients who received surgical treatment from 1990 to 1993 were studied and TAG-72 was detected immunohistochemically in the paraffin section by using monoclonal antibody B72.3. Results: Positive reaction to TAG-72 was observed in 98% of the specimens. Two positive reactions which show positivity over one third and below two thirds were 34%, and Three-positive reaction which shows positivity over two third were 30%. TAG-72 was highly expressed in the well differentiated gastric cancer(P$lt;0.05). The expression of the TAG-72 was not rnuch related to T and N factors but demonstrated a strong positivity in the absence of the distant metastasis (p$lt;0.05). Conclusions: TAG-72 is expressed more strongly in the gastric cancer which is well differentiated and in the lower stage without any distant metastasis and shows an insignificant expression rate in the more progressed stage. In this regard, we have come to the conclusion that the more TAG 72 is expressed, the lower invasiveness of the carcinoma is expected.
