Institutions included in this study of emergency short term shelters for children in crisis included 2 public counseling centers providing short term protection services for children and 12 emergency shelters for runaway children located in a metropolitan city in Korea. The institutions were examined with respect to their establishment, management, and programs. The researcher visited and interviewed workers employed in the institutions. In additions, 12 children who had been cared for emergency shelters were surveyed with open-ended questions. The data consisted of information on founders, locations, purpose, current management, personnel, length of care, and number and grouping of children. Programs and daily schedules were also examined. Effective models of emergency short term shelters were discussed on the basis of the collected data.

This study assessed the needs and aspirations for after-school programs for 421 employed mothers with a school-age child. Furthermore, 20 cases of after-school programs presently opened in Seoul and Kyungkido were analyzed and evaluated in terms of the factors related to quality of child care programs. A tentative after-school program model was developed on the basis of data from the assesment of parental requests and the evaluation of the present programs. The objectives of after-school programs, program activities, caregiver`s role, group constellation, supervision of the programs, and care service time were discussed in the model.

The present study researched the development of a mixed-age after school program with a focus on the facilitation of emotional intelligence for low SES children. The model program was based on the Mayer and Salovey (1997) theory of emotional intelligence. Activities for 17 sessions were constructed on the basis of 43 objectives. The program was implemented with 53 children in the after school program classes of one elementary school in Kyuggi Province for 6 months. Participants were from low SES families, grouped into 3 mixed-age (K-3rd grade level) classes. Evaluation of the program showed positive effects on the development of children`s emotional intelligence. Validity and appropriateness were discussed.

This study is to review the policy papers on school age child care services in Korea and to raise some issues on school age child care policies. For the purposes, the demends and supplies of child care services, the types of managing school age child care and the care-givers' educational background and professional status were analyzed and the progressive foreign policies for school age child care systems were reviewed with regard to policies to supply affordable and available school age child care services. The author suggested some policies to facilitate school age child care in Korea, including tasks for establishing legal basis of financial support to develope the quality child care programs.

This study is to find the relationship between children's learning experiences in preschool years and their creativity in middle childhood. In this study, children's learning experiences in early childhood were operationally defined as fourteen purposive educational experiences at home as well as in the nursery, kindergarten and private academies. A child's creativity was measured by Wartegg Zeichen Test and Creative Persenality test constructed by the researcher for their study. The sample of their study consisted of 208 4th grade male and female children in seoul. The study found that there was significant relationship between children's learning experience in early childhood and their creativity in middle childhood. Of fourteen learning experience, children's reading guided by parents, learning experiences of music and visual art education in the nursery or kindergarten were the factors positively related to their creativity.
