Vol.15 No.2

This essay deals with the two married women, Mrs. Dalloway in Mrs Dalloway by Virginia Woolf and Mrs. Bloom in Ulysses by James Joyce, focusing on the issues of the crisis in their identities within the marriage system and their struggle to get independent realm in it. The title of Wolf`s text, Mrs. Dalloway and Mrs. Bloom emphasize the fact that their names themselves always evoke their husbands such as Mr. Dalloway and Mr. Bloom instead of their own names. Furthermore, the subtitle of the last episode of Ulysses, "Penelope," referring to the faithful wife of Odysseus despite his numerous extramarital affairs with other women, defines Molly`s primary role as the good wife of Bloom. Therefore, the title and subtitle play the role to reveal the situation in which the two women experience their identity crisis upon their getting married in those days. However, two women characters are not the traditional submissive and conforming to the conservative male-centered ideology. First of all, they seek to establish their own place in the existing marriage system. For example, the fact that for Clarissa the most important element for choosing her future husband is whether the man can give her "a little independence" (MD 86) suggests that she does not want to give up her own independence in spite of her getting marriage. But her struggle is not an easy one and there exists the gap between Mrs. Dalloway who "had the oddest sense of being herself invisible; unseen; unknown" (MD 11) and Clarissa who dreamt to "reform the world" (MD 36) and believed that she fell "in love with women" (MD 35). This gap does not come from Clarissa`s own fault but from the social structure which prevents women from acquiring their economical and political independence. In the case of Mrs. Molly who belongs to the lower class of her society, she directly attacks the conservative male ideology by means of her powerful interior monologue. To begin with, she divulges her husband`s unfaithfulness through numerating his various love affairs. Then she states her own sexual desire without reservedness, which has traditionally been forbidden in the western society. This strategy of being "anti Penelope" is effective to dismantle the patriarchal ideology in which women`s social position is secondary to that of men`s. However, the fact that Molly`s powerful voice is completely confined within her inner thought indicates that women of those days did not have the means to express their voices publically.

Vol.15 No.1

Joyce`s Ulysses endows its three main characters, Stephen, Bloom, and Molly with the diverse interior monologues, which plays the fundamental role in the unique narrative structure of the text. To begin with, the common element of the three main characters` interior monologues is that it allows them to acquire the dominant narrative position over other characters such as Mulligan, Haines, Deasy, and Citizen who are not given the narrative style. However, the fact that Ulysses contains the several narrators who have different interior monologue makes the narrative of the text more complicated and more entangled, obstructing the fixation of the meaning of the narrated things. In addition, the main characters` dependence on interior monologue styles for the purpose of expressing their points of view regarding the diverse social matters and their internal desire reveals their alienated social positions in Irish society. In other words, it can be said that there exists the close connection between the particular interior monologue styles of the main characters and their specific social position in Ireland. Firstly, Stephen largely relies on the free style interior monologue instead of actively participating in the dialogues with other characters such as Mulligan and Deasy who represent the dominant discourses in Ireland. Secondly, Bloom`s interior monologue which takes advantage of fantasy drama genre in "Circe" not only reveals his social condition in which he can not acquire the means to express his own ideas in the real world, but also functions to upset the order of the reality by providing the effective narrative device with which he can release his opinion freely in the fantastic world. This is similar to the case of Molly. Her interior monologue in "Penelope" which is exclusively composed of her own voice has ambivalent functions. This monologue not only reveals her situation in which she can not make communication with other people in the real world, but also it becomes the effective means to express her own ideas without being obstructed. In conclusion, the three different interior monologues given to the three main characters have two fundamental functions, one of which is to reflect the real social condition of those characters and the other of which is to provide them the device to dismantle the existing dominant discourses in their society.

Vol.- No.58

The Portrait of the Artist as a Young Man과 박태원의『소설가 구보씨의 일일』은 소설이라는 ‘픽 션’이면서, 동시에 작가의 실제적 삶을 드러내는 ‘논픽션적’ 요소를 가지고 있다. James Joyce's The Portrait of the Artist as a Young Man and Park Tae-won's A day of Mr. Gubo a Novelist share Postmodernism's main characteristics such as ‘dismantlement of the border between fiction and nonfiction or of the border of reality and art,’ ‘self-reflexivity,’ ‘innovative experiments regarding language and styles,’ and ‘the resistance to the dominant authoritative discourses' of each one's era. Through the title of the text, The Portrait of the Artist as a Young Man James Joyce defines the main character of the text, Stephen Daedalus as ‘the artist,' which means the text will focus on the purport of 'the artist' (the writer) and of art (literature or novels). And the fact that James Joyce bestowed Stephen Daedalus with his own autobiographic elements emphasizes the dismantlement of the border between fiction and nonfiction, which is also the essential aspect of postmodernism. Likewise, in the title of the text, A day of Mr. Gubo a Novelist Park Tae-won also specifies the main character Gubo as a Novelist, which implies that the principle theme of A day of Mr. Gubo a Novelist is related to the meaning of the Novelist, of novel itself, and of writing a novel. This suggests that A day of Mr. Gubo apparently has self-reflexivity, too. And If we consider the fact that Gubo is the nickname of Park Tae-won, it is certain that the text is not only a fiction but also a nonfiction. Furthermore, the two texts make use of a lot of unconventional experiments regarding narrative techniques and language styles, which are led to challenge the convention of existing novel writing and question the dominant authoritative discourses or system of each writer's society such as Catholicism and Capitalism or Imperialism.
