포스트코로나 시대의 신천지(新天地)와 신종교학 -종교현상학적 해석-

본 논문은 신종교 사례로서 신천지를 중심으로 포스트코로나 시대에 형성되는 신종교 담론들이 어떤 방식으로 발전하는지에 주목하고자 한다. 특히, 신천지에 관한 부정적 인식이 단순히 ‘신종교의 담론’(discourse of new religion)을 넘어서 ‘종교 일반’(discourse of religion)에 관한 부정적 사회 인식으로 변하는 과정을 분석하고, 신종교의 사회적 책임(social responsibility of new religions)을 신천지 공동체의 이야기를 중심으로 설명할 것이다. 퓨 리서치 연구소에 따르면, 우리나라는 종교에 관한 사회적 적대감과 정부의 규제가 중간 수준이며, 미국 정부에서 매년 발행하는 국제종교자유보고서에는 신천지 사태의 추이가 실렸다. 2020년 2월의 신천지 코로나 확산 사태는 신천지에 관한 담론을 강화시켰고 기성교회의 비판과 성찰의 계기를 촉발하였다. 반신천지담론은 이론과 영성의 차원에서 부정적 인식을 강화할 뿐만 아니라, 종교비판이 지나치다는 메타 담론이 확산되고 있다. 이분법적인 종교담론을 넘어서 신천지 공동체의 이야기에 주목하여 성경 해석의 독특성과 차이를 분석하였다. 종교윤리학자 하우어워스의 관점을 적용하면, 종교와 같이 신종교의 사회적 책임은 이야기의 구조와 힘에 기초하고, 교회 그 자체가 되는 것을 책임으로 간주한다. 따라서 신종교의 사회윤리는 공동체의 다양성을 포용하는 리더십을 계발하여 자유주의를 극복하고 공동체를 강화한다. 신종교로서 신천지에 대하여 일방적 비판 담론을 넘어서, 세계관을 내부자의 입장에서 보다 체계적으로 이해해야 할 것이다. This article deals with how the religious discourses of Sincheonji (New Heaven and Earth) as a new religion were formed and developed in the era of post-COVID-19. The negative recognition of Sinchenji will be analyzed in discourses of a new religion and those of religion in general. Moreover, the social responsibility of the new religion will be explained in the case of Sinjeonji. According to the Pew Research Center, South Korea is regarded as a medium of social hostilities and government restrictions. The annual report of international freedom of religion published by the US government contains the change of the Sincheonji event. In February 2020, The outbreaks of COVID-19 led to the criticism and reflection of the existing church against Sincheonji. The counter-discourses on Sincheonji strengthened the negative image of religion in the theoretical and spiritual dimension and debunked the severity of religious criticism through meta-discourses. Beyond the dichotomy of religious discourse, this study focuses on the narrative of the Sincheonji community, analyzing its unique and different interpretations of the Bible. According to a religious ethicist, Stanly Hauerwas, the social responsibility of the new religion is based on the structure and power of narrative. Its responsibility is to become a church by itself. Therefore, the social ethic of new religion embraces the community’s diversity, develops its leadership, overcomes liberalism, and strengthens the community. We need not one way critical discourse of Sincheonji as a new religion but a more empathetic and systematic understanding.
