Vol.21 No.6
This study intends to examine the types and characteristics of clothing, colors, and costume culture of the 16th century of the Joseon Dynasty and to propose possible ways to develop Korean traditional costume. The method of research is to compare and contrast the types of clothing and fabric, and costume culture through historical records and empirical data from the “Miam Diary,” a personal diary of Yu Hi Chun (1513-1577) who was a scholar and high-ranking official, and the data from 64 empirical reports of excavated relics from the 16th century along with the Annals of King Seonjo. In the “Miam Diary,” a total of 230 clothing-related records were identified which can be categorized into 21 types. In the case of excavated costumes, according to an analysis of 64 men and women's tombs, a total of 1,145 items were identified in 19 types. While the leather clothes were found in the historical records of "Miam Diary" but not in the excavated costume, ‘Akjurem,’ ‘Dopo,’ ‘Chang-ui,’ and ‘Jungchimak’ were only found in the excavated costumes but not in the “Miam Diary.” Some of the most distinctive characteristics of the 16th century’s costume culture are the sharing of ‘Chimbi’s among acquaintances who can do designing and sawing, the lending and giving of the items, the customs of gift and self-production, the purchases of goods, and the grants from the royal family. In particular, it took more than two years to prepare wedding costumes. The excavated costume showed the 16th century's trend of costume, fabric, and pattern. This research has an original contribution to re-recognizing the value of traditional Korean costume culture of the 16th century for further development of traditional beauty.
