이 글은 다큐사진에 새로운 활기와 대안적인 상상력을 제공하고 있다는 평가와 인정을 받고 있는 노순택 작가의 작업을 논한다. 주지하다시피 사진은, 매체적인 역할과 일상적인 편재성에도 불구하고, 언론학과 미디어 문화연구의 영역에서 연구와분석이 크게 활성화되고 있지 못한 대상이다. 이 연구는 한국사회에 내재하는 갈등과 폭력성을 꾸준히 현장을 방문하면서 창의적인 사진 작업으로 담아오고, 문제적인 현실에 적극적으로 발언해 온 노순택이라는 한 “장면채집자’의 사례를 매개로, 그가 천착하는 다큐멘터리 작업이 제시ㆍ촉발하는 시학과 정치성에 대한 문화적인 분석을 제시하고자 시도한다. 이를 통해서 이 작업은 독자들에게 다큐사진의 역할과 특성에 대한 분석과 관심이 생성될 수 있는 작지만 유의미한 연결의 고리를 제공하고자 한다. This paper looks into the work of documentary photographer Noh Suntag whose work has gained much acclaim and attention in recent years. Noh’s much creative and socially conscious documentary work provides new insights and alternative perspectives through which the norms of documentary photo-making can be reconsidered, repositioned, and challenged. As a field photographer, he would frequently visit those sites where social incidents, conflicts, and violence occur. But his work goes well beyond capturing the scenes he comes to encounter through something like a committed “realist” eye since he self-consciously and critically interrogates his own work while experimenting with alternative representational strategies. Also he both strategically and creatively utilizes narratives through which his images can gain rich textures of critical meaning, resonances, and reflexivity. This work both introduces and comments on his work as a way of presenting a detailed case study of an innovative documentary photo-making into the field of media and cultural studies.

‘주체의 사회적 구성’을 자전적인 접근으로 탐구하는 지적인 실험의 도전과 의의 : 디디에 에리봉의 《랭스로 되돌아가다》를 사례로

이 글은 프랑스의 사회학자이자 게이 활동가인 디디에 에리봉의 자전적인 저작인 《랭스로 되돌아가다》의 서평이다. 필자는 에리봉이 자신의 계급적·성적 궤적과 체험을 집요하게 성찰하면서, 관련 쟁점을 세밀하게 서술해내는 이 텍스트를 분석의 대상으로 삼는다. 특히 이 작업은 자신의 경험과 주체성 구성의 주요단면을 단단한 ‘자가 진단’의 방식으로 구현한 텍스트가 발휘하는 특징과 함의를 다면적으로 조명하고자 한다. 나아가서 필자는 이런 사례가 한국에서 지식생산에 관여하고 있는 이들에게 어떤 통찰과 도전을 제기하는지를 긴 호흡으로 풀어낼 것이다. This critical review attempts to elaborate on Eribon’s autobiographical work as a way of both introducing and utilizing the constructive role and significant value of such radical representational project. 〈Returing to Reims〉 is a specific text in that it comprehensively presents Eribon’s self analysis on his life as a scholar who has working class ties and gay identity. By creatively working on his formative experiences and inner responses on social shame and class-specific habitus as an established intellectual who has aforementioned backgrounds, this book presents much analytic rigor, well-crafted storytelling, as well as socially competent and useful views in formulating a poignant and rich self-analysis.

“현장” 혹은 “민속지학적 저널리즘”과 내러티브의 재발견 그리고 미디어 생산자 연구의 함의

이 글은〈한겨레21〉이 시도한〈노동OTL〉연작을 분석과 리뷰의 사례로 삼아서, 저널리즘 장의 구성원들이 수행한 현장성의 재현과 밀도 있는 내러티브의 활용에 주목하고자 한다. 특히 통상적으로 이루어지는 (빈곤)노동의 문제와 노동자들의 삶에 대한 저널리즘의 제도적 취재관행이나 상대적 무관심과는 매우 차별화되는 취재의 방식과, 경험과 참여관찰이 두껍게 체화된 글쓰기를 매개로 기자들이 제공한 이 연작의 함의와 구성적인 특성을 텍스트 분석과 이 작업에 참가한 기자들과의 대담자료를 중심으로 조명하고자 한다. 이 과정에서 연구자는 현장 저널리즘 혹은 민속지학을 채용하는 저널리즘의 유용성과 가능성에 대하여 논하고자 한다. 부가적으로는 저널리즘과 방송 그리고 문화산업의 내부자들을 대상으로 그들의 활동과 문화 혹은 규범과 성향의 특성에 초점을 맞추고자 하는 생산자 연구의 필요성과 현실적인 한계점에 대하여도 개진하고자 한다. Hankyoreh 21’s〈Nodong OTL〉series is a rare example in the journalistic fields in that it extensively utilized series of field work into the lives of the working poor in several particular sites. This has been done by the journalists who work in the weekly magazine which is very rarely tried in the journalistic sector. By adopting detailed textual analysis and in-depth interviews with the journalists who produced the series, this case study attempts to shed lights on the nature and main characteristics of this pioneering series. In doing so, it emphasizes the role and potential of what might be called the “ethnographic journalism”. This study also looks into the use of thickly described narratives and the inventive strategies of story-telling adopted by the journalists who produced this landmark series. Additionally, this study hopes to introduce the emerging production analysis in media and cultural studies which, among other things, attempts to apply various forms of qualitative methods to the work and the working conditions of a range of media workers for future research and broader intellectual attention.

청년세대가 진단하는 정치 · 시사분야 팟캐스트 프로그램의 역할과 함의

2011년부터 〈나는 꼼수다〉(이하 나꼼수) 열풍을 계기로 팟캐스트에 대한 관심이 크게 높아졌으며, 특히 정치 · 시사 분야의 팟캐스트들이 비교적 짧은 기간에 약진한 바 있다. 특히 서울특별시장 보궐선거, 총선 등의 주요한 국면에서 팟캐스트 프로그램들의 역할과 명암이 제도언론과 정치권, 네티즌과 시민 들을 포함한 상당한 사회적인 주목을 받았고, 학계의 경우에도 소수의 탐색적인 분석들을 제시한 바 있다. 한편 지금까지 팟캐스트에 대해 진행된 선행 연구들은 팟캐스트의 사회정치적인 역할이나 (재)매개의 기능과 관련해서 주로 양적 연구방법론이나 빅 데이터 분석 혹은 담론분석이나 전문가 진단과 비평 등에 기반을 둔 접근 방식을 추구하는 분석들이 주로 시도되었다. 반면의 팟캐스트의 주요 수용자 층인 20~30대의 청년세대를 대상으로 접근하는 분석은 상대적으로 매우 소수였다. 이러한 측면에 착안하여 본 연구는 팟캐스트의 청취 계층 중에서 20~30대를 대상으로 한 심층과 서면인터뷰 방식과 문헌분석 및 기사분석을 조합하여, 팟캐스트 프로그램의 사회정치적인 역할과 매체로서의 기능들, 그리고 한계를 질적인 방식으로 고찰하고자 했다. 이러한 작업은 연구의 과정에서 수렴한 인터뷰 참여자들의 진단과 평가를 주요한 매개로, 특히 인터뷰 대상자들이 공통적으로 청취했던 팟캐스트 프로그램인〈나꼼수〉의 콘텐츠적인 특성과 정치적인 역할 그리고 명암을 상세하게 조명하고, 기존 연구들과 일정하게 차별화되는 분석과 해석을 제공하고자 하였다. In recent years, podcast programs have gained much public interests and attention in a relatively short time span in Korean society. They have collectively emerged as an actor in the public arena and local discursive field with new style of political contents and poignant social criticism. In situating and evaluating the varied and controversial roles of podcast programs on political issues and media-related topics, this study adopts in-depth interviews, qualitative analysis, and case studies. In doing so, this work aims to diagnose and discuss the roles, achievements, and limits of podcast programs from various angles.

대중문화 텍스트로 진단하는 ‘다문화주의’의 현황

이 연구는 혼혈인과 이주여성노동자의 삶을 스토리텔링의 전면에 내세우며 공존과 상생의 문제 그리고 다문화주의와 관련한 일정하게 전향적인 재현을 제시함으로써 상당한 대중적인 관심과 반향을 생성한 영화 『완득이』의 함의를 텍스트분석의 방식으로 상세하게 진단한다. 특히 이 작품에 대한 서사분석과 장르분석, 그리고 주요 캐릭터들이 형상화되는 방식을 복수의 관점에서 비판적으로 조명한다. 또한 이 과정에서 보다 진전된 분석과 복합적인 진단을 도모하기 위해서, 이 작품과 관련된 일련의 비평문과 언론의 기사들을 조합하면서 정리와 분석을 수행한다. 한편, 이 글은 기존의 영화를 포함해 다문화주의를 다루는 대중문화물에 관한 텍스트 비평의 사례에서 나타나는 전형성이나 한계를 부분적으로 넘어서기 위해서, 혼혈인과 이산인(diasporic subjects)들의 재현, 그리고 이들을 바라보는 우리사회의 주류적인 관점의 문제를 둘러싼 맥락성의 탐구를 ‘착한주체 만들기’와 ‘관용의 문제’를 중심으로 풀어낸다. This work deals with the problematic of multiculturalism in the area of popular culture. First, this study explores the genre-related characteristics and narrative strategies of Wandeukii - a much popular film that deals with multicultural issues. Especially this paper critically analyzes how this film delivers progressive elements on the representation of racial others and it stops short of providing more nuanced portrayal of racial others. Second, in order to present a more contextual reading of Wandeukii, this paper employs several key concepts ? the making of docile subjects and the pressing issue of tolerance and acceptance ? through which this highly popular text can be utilized as an important catalyst for furthering dialogues and analysis around the question of multiculturalism in contemporary South Korean society.

‘매체비평’의 역할과 명암을 다면적으로 진단하기 KBS 〈저널리즘 토크쇼 J〉의 특성과 성취 그리고 한계를 중심으로

이 연구는 매체비평이 수행하는 공적인 역할과 사회 내에서 대면하는 복합적인 쟁점과 이견을 KBS의 〈저널리즘 토크쇼 J〉를 핵심 사례로 삼아 조명하고자 한다. 주지하다시피 이 프로그램은 탄핵 이후 공영방송의 ‘정상화’와 비판적 기능의 복원을 상징하는 주요 사안으로 고려된다. 그간에 이 비평콘텐츠가 구성을 대안적으로 구현하면서 모색한 언론 관련 심층적인 진단이나 공적 쟁점에 관한 상세한 비평과 검증은 상당한 인정과 주목을 받은 바 있다. 그와 함께 보수언론을 중심으로 이 프로그램이 발현하는 정파적인 관점이나 ‘편향성’에 대한 공세적인 비난과 비판도 끊이지 않았다. 이 작업은 텍스트분석과 방대한 전문가 서면 인터뷰로, 〈저널리즘 토크 쇼 J〉의 특성과 성취 그리고 보완할 측면과 한계를 상세하게 짚어내고자 한다. 매체비평이 학술적으로 크게 정체된 상황에서, 이 연구는 후속 작업이 참고할 수 있는 정련된 학술자원과 진중한 논의를 제시하는 데 일조하고자 한다. This study attempts to illuminate the various roles and social effects that the 〈Journalism Talkshow J〉 in KBS performed through a textual analysis and an in-depth interview method. To put it bluntly, this program signaled a willed normalization of media criticism and rigorous journalistic review in public broadcasting sector. 〈Journalism Talkshow J〉 provided noticeable changes and poignant standpoints while reconstructing its format and mode of operation. In doing so, it ushered in a number of public recognition, collective interests, as well as positive responses. At the same time, it generated heated debates, controversies, and conflicts, especially from the conservative media. This work concretly deals with the afore-mentioned aspects in this program as a way of critically re-locating the roles and potential of media criticism at a time when journalsim is facing grave crisis and much blame in society.

갈등의 시대, ‘민속지학적 상상력’과 (미디어) 문화연구의 함의를 되묻기

다양한 문화현상과 미디어로 구성되는 현실에 대한 개입적인 지향과 세밀한 분석을 시도하는 비판적인 지식실천의 한 유형으로서 문화연구는 언론학 혹은 미디어 연구의 영역에서 그간 상당한 역할과 존재감을 드러내 왔다. 이 연구는 문화연구가 특히 수용자의 활동과 팬덤 현상을 포함한 문화적인 재현 및 수용의 과정을 분석하는 작업 속에서 비교적 활발하게 활용해 온 민속지학(ethnography)의 명암을 성찰적으로 자리매김하고자 한다. 나아가서 이 작업은 민속지학의 위상과 함의를 현재 한국사회가 직면하고 있는 일련의 갈등과 문제적인 상황에 개입적으로 적용시키기 위한 고민과 자성을 담아내고자 시도하였다. Cultural studies has been a formative player in media and communication studies for years. In engaging with various media-mediated phenomena and complex cultural processes, cultural studies has utilized ethnography, especially in the form of audience research and fandom analysis. This article attempts to examine the ways ethnographic audience research has been mobilized and to present alternative ways ethnography can engage with new sets of problematics in society.

소통과 감응을 지향하는 학문적인 글쓰기를 위한 문제의식과 대안의 추구

이 글은 언론학 영역 내 학술적인 글쓰기의 문제점과 명암을 진단하며, 이 주제와 관련된 일련의 쟁점들과 ‘자기민속지학’의 사례를 중심으로, 특히 대안적이고 성찰적인 글쓰기의 역할과 가능성을 심도 있게 논의하려는 목적을 갖는다. 이 작업은 ‘논문중심주의’와 학술논문으로 표상되는 지식생산의 제도화가 가져온 상당한 성취와 학문적인 글쓰기의 확립이 가져오는 순기능에도 불구하고, 이러한 특화되고 규범화된 글쓰기가 보여주는 한계와 경직성 그리고 관(습)성의 문제점을 다양한 각도에서 지적하고, 대안을 추구하려는 문제의식을 구체적으로 표출하고자 한다. This paper critically examines the current states of scholarly writing, especially in the field of media studies and communication research. In particular, this work pays keen attention to the limits and shortcomings of the established ways and norms of academic writing and its varied effects from several viewpoints. Also, in an attempt to imagine and activate self-awareness and alternatives to the dominant forms of academic writing and its powerful effects of disciplinization, I will present a detailed analysis of two scholarly works that employ auto-ethnographic endeavors in a highly creative and innovative fashion. In doing so, I will explore intellectual resources, insights, as well as pragmatic strategies for alternative and self-reflexive forms of writing.

‘비판 커뮤니케이션’의 지성사 쓰기 : 강재호의 복기 작업에 관한 비판적 논의와 반박을 중심으로

이 글은 강재호(2020) 교수가 제공한 ‘비판 커뮤니케이션’을 주제로 삼는 ‘지성사적’ 접근에 관한 비판적 리뷰이자, 비슷한 문제의식을 공유하는 연구자들이 구성한 ‘화답’이다. 먼저 필진은 그가 시도한 사례분석이 발휘하는 학문적 의의와 자성의 기회를 주목하게 된다. ‘비판이론’의 부상과 퇴조, 그리고 제도화의 명암과 관련 지식생산의 변화상을 상세하게 조명하는 작업으로서, 그의 작업은 지적인 측면에서 유용하며, 생산적인 논쟁을 매개한다고 평가할 만하다. 동시에 이 글은 비판 커뮤니케이션의 궤적과 성과를 서울대 언론정보학과 내부 교원들의 활동을 중심으로 전개하는 그의 작업에 이견과 성찰적 제언을 진중하게 제기하는 작업이기도 하다. 필진은 지면에서 그런 문제의식을 구체적으로 풀어내면서, 맥락적인 방식으로 관련 논의와 쟁점을 상세하게 풀어내고자 한다. 특히 필진은 그가 제공한 범주와 평가 및 진단의 방식을 비판적으로 조명할 것이다. This review critically explores Jaeho Kang’s article, entitled “Scientificity of Critique and Normativity of Method: A Reflection on Critical Communication Studies in South Korea.” First of all, we think his article presents an interesting and useful case study about four former faculty members in the Department of Communication at Seoul National University whose work can be associated with the pursuit of critical communication studies. Kang attempts to track down the very emergence of, and the changing trajectories of critical communication studies in South Korea with a focus on the various intellectual strategies adopted by those four scholars. At the same time, we present several critical suggestions and counter-arguments on Kang’s work as a way of both contextualizing and sharpening what Kang initiated in his article.
