놀람의 동작 표현에 관한 연구 -아드만 스튜디오의 애니메이션 "월래스와 그로밋"을 중심으로-

다윈이 규명한 6개의 감정 기본형 중 하나인 놀라움은 갑자기 어떠한 일이 일어나거나 기대 이상 의 일을 대할 때 주로 일어나는 감정이다. 놀라움은 스스로 일어날 수 없고 순간적으로 느끼는 감정이 기 때문에 감정의 주체현상이 반드시 존재한다. 본 논문에서는 아드만 스튜디오의 작품 중 가장 많은 인지도를 가진``월래스와 그로밋``시리즈를 놀라는 동작의 표현을 중심으로 스톱모션이 가지는 일정한 표현양식을 찾아내고자 모색하였고, 이러한 양식이 작품 전체의 분위기에 어떠한 영향을 미치는지 연구해 보았다. 특히 타이밍과 포즈별로 구분 하여 사전 동작, 주 동작, 후 동작의 프레임 배분을 통한 움직임의 변이를 분석하였다. 놀라는 동작은 매우 순간적으로 이루어지고 몸이 웅크렸다 펴지는 단순한 모션으로 이루어져 있지만 그 속에 거의 모든 애니메이션 법칙이 적용되고 있 어 애니메이션 스타일을 분석하는데 매우 적합하다. 또한 이러한 움직임의 일정한 스타일이 작품 전체 에도 영향을 미쳐 극 분위기를 만들어나가는데 상 당한 역할을 하고 있으므로 애니메이션을 공부하는 관련 종사자들에게 매우 유용한 정보가 될 수 있을 것이다. Surprisal which is one of six essential emotions of human verified by Darwin, appears mainly when people experience in something happening suddenly, or deal with something bigger than being expected. As surprisal cannot occur by itself and is an emotion appearing in a moment, it is accompanied by an independent phenomenon or cause as a necessity. This study was designed to examine a correlation between surprisal motion and animation styles based on the tendency that there have coherent motion style in stopmotion works. Especially, expressional ways of surprisal appearing in ``Wallas and Gromit`series of the Aardman studio were analyzed depending on each timing and pose and then, characteristics of each studio were extracted, by comparing variation of movements by frame distribution of pre-motions, main motions and post-motions and changes in facial expression and forms of backbones, hands and arms that each work has. Surprisal motion is very appropriate to analyze animation styles, since it contains almost every animation principles, although it appears in a moment and is organized with simple motions to curl up and stretch a body. Also, this animation tendency plays an important role in creating work`s atmosphere, since it has influence on not only particular emotions, but also the whole work. These will be useful informations for artists in animation fields.
