Seroepidermiologocal study of acute hemorrhagic diseases among suspect Hemorrhagic fever with renal syndrome(HFRS) patients in Korean soldiers from 1985 to 1988 was carned out and the following results were obtained. 1. Many cases of HFRS occurred annually among Korean soldiers from 1956 to 1988. But the incidence of HFRS was decreasing in the period of 1980's compared to that of 1970's. 2. In 1985,84 cases of Leptospirosis and 20 cases of Scrub typhus were confirmed among Korean soldiers for the first time. Five cases of Leptospirosis and 7 cases of Scrub typhus were confirmed in 1986 and 8 cases of Scrub typhus were documented in 1987. 3. In 1988, 97 cases of HFRS, 6 cases of Scrub typhus and 3 cases of Leptospirosis were dignosed, and 21 cases of Murine typhus and 16 cases of Spotted fever patients were diagnosed among Korean soldiers for the first time. 4. According to the monthly occurrence of acute hemorrhagic diseases among soldiers in 1988. HFRS occurred all year around with the large peak between October and December. Scrub typhus mostly occurred between September and November and Murine typhus occurred through out the year. Spotted fever occurred all year around but high incidence especially in Spring and Leptospirosis was mostly noted in early summer. 5. About 95% of total HFRS cases between 1976 and 1988 occurred in Kyunggido and Kangwondo. There has been a changing trend of peak incidence of HFRS in Korea. In the late 1970's, the small peak was noted between May and July with the large peak between October and December, however, only large peak has been demonst 20ted m late fall in 1980's. 6. Mortality rate of HFRS was about 5 to 7% in 1970's but it decreased to 3% in 1980's because of the early serologic diagnosis of the disease and intensive care with improved therapeutic modalities. The seroepidermiological study on suspect HFRS confirmed the occurrences of Leptospirosis and Scrub typhus in 1985, and Murine typhus and Spotted fever in 1988 among Korean soldiers hospitalized at the Capital Army Hospital for the first time.
